Join me as I discover history in my new backyard! Hyde Park, New York and the surrounding area are overflowing with historic homes, estates, and relics of the Gilded Age. My Dad & I first tour the Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site, complete with the first ever Presidential Library & FDR Museum, alongside the former President's lifelong home of Springwood. The tour & museum gave us so much information and insight into the world of this beloved President.
We next toured the Spring & Fall residence of Frederick and Louise Vanderbilt. Frederick was the grandson of one of America's first multi-millionaires Cornelius Vanderbilt. Their seasonal mansion was thought by them as more of a 'cottage' where they largely enjoyed their time outdoors. The interior drips with elegance, the gardens are full of unique beds and sculptures, and one of, if not the continent's oldest Gingko Tree stands tall on the estate's grounds.
If you love history and old homes, don't miss either of these amazing National Historic Sites!

You made such a beautiful and elegant video. In less than 15 minutes you gave us such an informative and visually appealing tour de luxe of these beautiful historic estates. A&E's iconic America's Castles 90s program couldn't have done much better💖💖💖Bravo and thank you

Having a mild passion for all things WW2, I was delighted by your skillfully presented tour. You have a good eye with the camera and and undulating cadence that makes your commentary very easy to listen to. an excellent job young lady! now give us some more gilded age delights please ;-) Paul in South africa

We visited both of these magnificent homes in 2019. We also visited Eleanor Roosevelt's home, Val-Kill cottage, that was near by. In all three cases, U.S. Park Service docents were especially knowledgeable and superb in their delivery. While each home is unique in it's own right, you should absolutely visit all three! You will need two days to properly take in these magnificent estates.

Have you ever been to The Little White House in Warm Springs, Georgia? That is where FDR spent most of his time after contracting polio. It is also where he died. His long-time mistress was with him. It is also a National Park.

FDR also lived in Warm Springs, Georgia. It is a National Park and is called The Little White House. He died there.

Loved the video. The drape covered furnishings were typical of 19th and 20th century great homes when the occupants would be away during the summer months to cut down on dust and sunlight exposure.

I recently had to move from this area after living there for most of my life and I'm so terribly home sick. I'm happy I can feel like I'm back again for a moment.

I’m so sorry you’re feeling home sick, I can understand why - it’s a beautiful area. I’m so glad I could give you a taste of home and I hope you’re able to return and visit one day soon! The Vanderbilt grounds and the Staatsburg Historic Site grounds have become one of ours and our dogs favorite places to walk as well - I’m very excited for my first New England fall in these places. Thanks for watching! ♥️

Great video. Your camera work is very good. This makes me want to go see these houses. How close are they together? 10 - 20 minutes away from each other?

Aw thank you so much! 🥰 I highly recommend checking them out - these two are a little less than 10 minutes apart, and there a number of other wonderful estates in the area within a short driving distance like Val-kill, Locust Grove and the Mills Mansion!

The film is lovely, but the narration was too fast for someone with hearing issues. I had to mute the audio to enjoy. Sadly this is the norm for broadcasting now.

Teddy Roosevelt was Eleanor's uncle NOT Franklin's?? Teddy was FDR's 5th cousin.

I wish that Social Security was never thought of.

It helped a lot of people. My Great Grandparents were from a long line of farmers. They called it the 'old person pension.' The Great Depression was tough on them. However, I do agree that it was not well thought out. Most social safety nets are doomed for failure.

@JeanetteFaith That's my point exactly. Never, ever depend on the government to take care of you.
