Your argument brings to light a significant issue regarding unauthorized construction, particularly when it occurs in places meant for public use or environmental protection, such as lakes, drainage systems, parks, and other reserved lands. The fact that previous governments may have permitted such constructions in exchange for bribes reveals not just corruption, but a long-term threat to both quality of life and sustainable development. Here are a few key points 1. Environmental Impact: Constructing in ecologically sensitive areas like lakes and drainage systems can lead to severe environmental degradation. Lakes play a crucial role in managing urban water systems, and their encroachment can result in flooding and water scarcity. Similarly, blocking drainage systems leads to urban flooding, as we have seen in several cities in India. When these natural systems are disrupted for unauthorized construction, it invites disaster, affecting both lives and property. 2. Public Spaces and Urban Planning: Parks and other public spaces are essential for urban quality of life. They serve as recreational areas, enhance social cohesion, and improve air quality. If such spaces are encroached upon for private construction, cities become cramped, leading to overcrowding, heat islands, and a lack of communal spaces. It hampers the organized development of cities and towns, directly affecting the well-being of the population. 3. Impact on Infrastructure and Safety: Unauthorized constructions on roads or other public lands can lead to chaotic urban infrastructure. Roads and pathways are vital for transport, commerce, and emergency services. When unauthorized buildings obstruct these spaces, it results in traffic congestion, accidents, and delays in crucial services like healthcare and fire departments. Additionally, building on drainage or water bodies might lead to foundations weakening over time, putting residents at risk of collapse or flooding. 4. Rule of Law and Governance: Permitting unauthorized construction undermines the rule of law. It shows that enforcement agencies and government officials can be swayed by bribes, compromising the safety and security of the public. In the long run, this erodes trust in public institutions. If illegal construction is allowed to continue, it sends a dangerous signal that laws can be bent for personal gain. This creates a society where disorder becomes the norm, and genuine development takes a backseat. 5. Demolition as a Step Toward Development: Demolishing unauthorized structures may seem harsh, but it’s often necessary for long-term development. Illegal constructions not only block public infrastructure but also endanger lives. By removing such encroachments, governments can ensure that cities grow in a planned and sustainable manner. These actions can pave the way for better-designed infrastructure, public spaces, and sustainable urban growth. In this context, demolition is an investment in a better, more livable future. 6. Long-Term Planning for Quality Living: Planned urban development is key to a nation’s progress. Specified layouts and zoning regulations are created to ensure that cities function efficiently, with the right balance of residential, commercial, industrial, and recreational spaces. When these layouts are violated, it leads to disorderly growth, which can result in congestion, pollution, and a decrease in the quality of life. Protecting lakes, parks, and roads isn’t just about following rules; it’s about safeguarding a future where cities are livable, clean, and safe. 7. Health and Safety Risks: People who live in unauthorized constructions built on unsafe land-like drainage systems or lakes-are at a significant risk. Their homes could be flooded, and there could be health hazards due to poor sanitation. Even in cases where the environment itself isn't a direct threat, lack of adherence to building codes could result in structurally unsound buildings that may collapse. The consequences, as you mentioned, can indeed be fatal, both from environmental risks and from the instability of illegal structures. In conclusion, illegal construction damages the very fabric of society, from environmental degradation to compromised infrastructure, reduced safety, and a weakened rule of law. Demolition of such structures is not just about clearing space-it’s about enforcing the principles of sustainable development and ensuring that cities grow in a manner that enhances, rather than detracts from, the quality of life. It’s about putting the well-being of the community and future generations ahead of short-term profits. In this sense, clearing illegal encroachments is indeed a form of development and a necessary step toward achieving better living standards for all.

My request to the Commissioner of Hyderabad is not only to demolish the encroachments on lakes but also to address the encroachments on major city roads at the earliest. Today, the public of Hyderabad is suffering from heavy traffic due to road encroachments. Widening roads is also crucial for improving the city's connectivity, ensuring that roads maintain a consistent lane size from start to end. In Western countries like those in Europe, if a bus is scheduled to arrive at 10:10, it arrives on time because the roads are widened and there is enough space for smooth driving. Therefore, I urge you to focus on road widening in Hyderabad to alleviate traffic issues and improve transportation.
