Let's take a detailed look at a hydraulic braking system: the brake pedal valve, the slack adjustor, the brake piston, and the brake discs, all of which would be found in the wheel spindle housing of a motor grader or wheel loader. We'll see how the system works step by step, and then what happens as the brake discs wear out. This video should be a big help the next time you need to troubleshoot your hydraulic brakes.
You should buy the working animations and lessons on our website: www.lunchboxsessions.com. They're the best, most affordable professional learning material in the industry. Your support helps us keep making these videos, and you'll learn a ton more.
If there's a hydraulic (or electrical) topic you'd like to see us cover, leave a comment. As always, thanks for watching!

Wow! That was superb. I am a heavy equipment mechanic and never understood that operation from that perspective. Hope there is more coming that I might not know about.

would this system be considered an open or closed system? also what is the purpose of the pressure switch in the park brake?

Great video, I know this isn’t a forum , if anyone has had loader brakes lock up ? I pick up a old 515 B IH Case, Dresser ... after running it for a few hours the machine won’t hardly move. I see a lot of disconnected wires to what appears to be solenoids for park brake , Before I dive into the internals I was going to get that mess cleaned up . I don’t think transmission is the issue it felt good the few hours and test run. I’m thinking slack adjuster and worn disks? Could it be part fail safe If you can point me in the right direction I’ll get out of my own way Thanks

Hi, i am having the same issues with my 515 front loader. Were you able to figure out what was wrong with yours? Any insight would be greatly apricated.

The slack adjuster seems very complicated to me. Seems to exist merely as a way to prevent the oil trapped between the slack adjuster and the brake caliper from entering the rest of the hydraulic system? Perhaps that is a different type of oil? And the small piston in the center is just a provision for an emergency where you are leaking brake fluid?

Otherwise I do no really see why not to connect the pedal valve directly to the caliper.

What it does is it prevents oil from returning back to the rest of the system. So regardless of brake wear, the offset is always the same. Wear is automatically compensated when you press the brakes hard enough to open the small valve inside compensator. When you let off the pressure, the brakes are always relieved only for the volume of the compensator.
