While lifting the boom and curling out the bucket, all of a sudden hydraulic fluid started spraying everywhere. Why this seal failed the way it did, I don't know. Dirt could be a factor as the wiper seal was completely deteriorated, but the remainder of the rod seal that didn't come to pieces looked decent.
Anyways, in this video I replace all the seals on the cylinder.

sprays 1/2 gallon hydraulic fluid demonstrating the leak also- carefully holds tray under cylinder to catch 1/4 cup of fluid lol great video though!

It was more so to retract the rod, but you're right, totally counterproductive! I'll try to be more conscious of that in the future lol. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

@@fixaday is it necessary to retract the rod? I mean I know there’ll be fluid that comes out as you pull it out but could you not collect more of the fluid that way. Just curious before I do mine - not being a smart arse.

It’s more so about the volume on either side of the piston. The side with the rod had less volume, so less fluid lost during disassembly. In my case, I sprayed out so much fluid that it was counterintuitive. This is different if you can angle the cylinder upwards, so fluid won’t run out during disassembly. In that case, I’d extend the rod before disassembly. In all honesty, it’s going to be a lot of fluid loss either way. It’s likely negligible in how you disassemble it.

I used a 1/2" pneumatic impact wrench on the piston bolt. Nothing moved. Then I used a 3/4" SK ratchet with a cheater bar. The 3/4" drive broke on the ratchet. I took the piston to local rental company. Mechanic used the Milwaukee 1/2" M18 High Torque Battery Impact Wrench and the bolt came out. Same Impact Wrench you have, nice. I'm getting one.

Great videos Wayne. Extremely helpful (& entertaining). Where did you get that pin tool? I’d like to buy one. Much obliged to your wife for being a trooper filming!!! Most videographers (aka wives or other family members) are a disaster capturing the important moments, your wife is always ON POINT.

Glad you found it helpful; thank you for the support! Which pin tool are you referring to?
@enchantedforestfarm776
@enchantedforestfarm776 3 года назад
The one you used to remove the round cap with two holes. The tool has two pins that go inside the holes to create torque to loosen the cap.

Ah, gotcha. It’s an adjustable gland nut wrench (pin/dowel style). This one works for two sizes, one on each side. I can’t remember what size they are, but possibly 1/4” and 5/16”. They’re readily available online, prices range from $20-$50.

Hi Wayne, nice video. What size, about, was the bolt through the piston? Did you just use a battery impact to remove it? Thanks
@fixaday
@fixaday 3 года назад
I used a 46mm socket on it. It's actually a standard bolt, my guess is 1 13/16'' head, but the 46mm fit snug. I did use a 1/2'' battery impact. I'm not sure if it was torqued to spec and had threadlocker or not before removing it though, It came loose easily.

Great video mate. Now to fix mine! Do you have the torque settings for the gland and the screw in the bottom of the piston?
@fixaday
@fixaday 2 года назад
Thanks! Yes, the gland nut is 100-200 lb-ft (video was 200) and the piston cap screw is 1000-1200 lb-ft (video was 1000).

What torque did you use on the piston nut and the gland?
@fixaday
@fixaday 2 года назад
100-200 pound-feet for the gland (if it uses a set screw), I set this one to 200. 1,000-1,200 pound-feet for the piston cap screw, using Loctite 242.

no lube over the new seals during initial slide in?

I used a light smear of vaseline, as pictured in the background during the installation.

Holt seems like an uncommon last name, but I am from Calhoun, Georgia. I don’t believe I have any family from that region but you never really know!
