The old saying - 'the customer is always right' - But it's not always correct. He did not want any preventative work done (stiffeners etc). That usually means repeat work for the shop carrying out the repairs the next time it fails, and the second failure may need more than pressing back into shape...
Could you please do a video where you tell everyone about your past work experiences? Your knowledge goes far beyond welding and I think people would be interested to hear about how you gained so much knowledge. Thanks and please keep up the great videos.
Another great done repair done. I'm no engineer, but my thoughts is I would have designed it to have maybe one gusset in the middle of the pen housing or one on each side of the housing facing towards the center to spread the load out.
Another great repair. I am not a fabricator (just an old retired machinist) but I would have welded a strengthening "rib" to the plate once it had been straightened.
@@OFW Doesn't make the customer right though! I noticed that the plate bent beyond where the bushed gussets ended on top and just before the swivel bushes for the wheels. If those upper bushed gussets had been made to run to the end of the plate and as thick as the steering bushes are high, I don't think that it would have bent as easily. Then again what would I as a Carpenter of 40 years know? 😅 Is this machine for grinding concrete highways or similar? Mark from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺
@@markfryer9880I also think the upper plates should go to the end of the plate. Yes, it’s for concrete highways. Make them smooth or put in the groves like over bridges.
Hi Greg, thank you for your time and effort to show us your work. I presume that´s the wheel with the broken 3" shaft you repaired a while ago. The Bearings are not painted neither the face of the Shaft. They dropped the Grinder in a Cuvert causing the shaft to shear off and bending the plate downwards. Greetings from Germany Manni the CAT Man
Awesome, another great project, thank you for sharing, always a pleasure follow your project, you are a good teacher and your explanation are awesome 👍👍👍👍
You are ALWAYS better off repairing something to original condition and design, UNLESS the customer asks you to modify it. You will only get blamed for future issues if you modified it without permission. Sometimes you can’t get approval for alterations, especially dealing with a large company.
Are you getting sick of telling people that the customer didn’t want to add a gusset? Good repair. That hydraulic Ram is quite the unit! Thanks for making a video, always appreciate it!
@@OFWLoL 🤣😆 Definitely understand! Making ourselves public with what we do, we're going to get "schooled" by the experts! LoL 🤣😆 It's easy to forget what details the viewers are going to focus on and not mention those details in the video! LoL 😂😆 Keep pushing that rope!
I’m 76 years old and 40-59 years ago a wise man told me, “ if you don’t know how to do something , someone has written a book about it”. I’ve been tearing things apart an building things all my life. Failure is one of your best teachers. And today we have the internet videos (but be careful). Watch a bunch and use that Neanderthal brain that the Good lord gave you. Love your videos, Max❤️❤️🐕🦺 Wow, I’m losing it. You’re my number one welding video website, but I meant this comment for another and was jokingly referring to their dog at the end but then again you use that brain of yours all the time and I’m amazed at all that you do great videos.
WAIT !!! Something is missing here! Was waiting 17 minutes for the "fix the problem", and then "Let get it back together". Wait. Why did the plate bend in the first place, and most importantly, how were you going to prevent it from happening again ??? Especially since the plate has been bent downward, and now back upward, it's weaker that when new, so what's to prevent this from bending again? Your expertise in repairing parts so they don't fail again is what this channel is all about, at least for me. Thanks.
I’m not sure how it bent down. Probably a weird situation. I asked to reinforce it and the customer said no. This is the first time this issue has happened in 3 years. If it happens again I bet I will be putting a gusset.
G'day Mate, That dolly set up came out from the trailer pretty easy. That crane makes life a a little easier. Thanks for the vidios. cheers from Australia.
The way you analyze the problem, the way you think you could solve the problem.....man you're brilliant and very experimented.. Too bad you didn't come a doctor or a neuro chirurgian. You would have been better than doctor House. Great video as usual. Thank you.
Thanks for the confirmation. I think these wheels are a weak point in the construction of the machine. On an other previous Video I saw Jacob working on another of these wheels , seems that he was cutting the Shaft as well. BTW I read the well deserved praise on Jacob " The best employee I ever had". Keep him around! Greetings from the CAT Man
Love the hat. Wish I'd had one on Saturday. Attended nieces graduation in sunny weather and now my face and bald spot are toast. Great video. Wonder how long it will be before it bends again.
Excellent hydraulic wizardry there! Impressive. What is this design? While yes lack of maintenance for sure, it seems like this is a design flaw that caused this in the first place
Great job. I always like to watch your videos. My only question is what is going to keep it from happening again tomorrow. I thought you were going to add some kind of stiffeners.
A fantastic quick repair but it not of been better to hhave welded a half inch or inch plate between the two towers to stop them bending in again? It's just a thought Im only asking or was there not enough time to do this??
@OFW thank's for your reply, I thought you may have asked the question that's there loss because it would of help stopping this bending and happening again but then that would of put you out of a job if it goes again.
I'm just wondering, since "Nampa, ID" was in bold font on the back of all of those trucks, and is where my mom's family is from, are you actually located in Idaho, or in California with trucks oddly labeled with a different city/state, and/or are all of those the client's tractors? This is all probably completely irrelevant info, I'm just really curious since this is my first time seeing Nampa featured on anything. LMAO
Profiler: turns lumpy into noisy. Nice work. A little amazing that an expensive machine like that gets put on the deferred maintenance plan. Design defect. Why didn't they take those gussets out to the perimeter of that plate?
11:35 FNG seems to know what he is doing. Hopefully it is a long term mutually beneficial endeavor. We all know it can be a challenge building and maintaining a team that works well. 14:24 Can you explain how this is supposed to work? I see a fixed length tie rod on one side, and a hydraulic cylinder on the other. 14:11 Never mind. I see the trunnion. Fair bit of gravity on that skate.
I’m fascinated by the hollow ram press setup. Looks like a good and versatile solution. What power unit and rams are you using? Are they just the Amazon ones or do you have a better source? I assume they are a standard fitting? Thx for posting the videos.
I'm neither a welder nor a heavy equipment operator but I really enjoy your videos! A lot of your repairs seem to be as a result of poor inspections and maintenance! Do they not have checklists?! With that kind of money involved you'd think they would be a lot more disciplined? Or are checklists only for nerds!
@@OFW And if each of your clients ran an airline, how many would you fly with? Probably zero! 😅And that speaks of the wastage going here! But, good for your business! And thankfully you are an ethical and masterful fixer!
if there is space, might it be an idea to extend the triangular reinforcing gussets towards the end of each plate carrying the vertical swivel axles, to stop them bending again
Great job getting them ready for tomorrow! I hope you charged enough! My question/comment is just what does that steering setup do in the operation of a concrete profiler? Is it to steer the trailer once its disconnected from the truck or is it to follow the shape of the concrete roadway?
Ok had to google what this contraption was and what it does.... A Highway grinder for concrete and asphalt roads. For that plate to bend the way it did, seems like it may have been driven off highway, in both directions ? Wouldn’t doubt it if this happens again.....Could be a future redesign/ build ???
What I'd love to know is how did it get bent like that? If it was from just general use, then did it need a redesign and some additional strengthening.
With all of that weight being taken by that bogey, I would have expected the plate to have bent upwards. Instead it was bent downward, what am I missing?
I am new to weilding. When u weilding Multiple passes around what you're welding. Why not go short?Pay short passes from up to?Don't know if they came out right
You should have added two welded plates (Or one between) on the sides of the plain bearings. Welded to the same and the main plate to stop further movement of the plain b
And the trend is I know this is last minute but could you fix this because I need it tomorrow please maybe it's a coincidence but I've been noticing a lot of other videos with welder mechanics getting these last minute calls for repairs aren't those kind of calls just so fun cool video by the way
@@SuperSecretSquirell I used to have a work mate like that. I was always fixing things that he would break. We joke that imaginary shares in my company took a dive the day that he resigned. It's true though as I have been doing less welding since he left. 😅 Mark from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺
