That's a real thing. It's called a "Hysteretic Buck Regulator" and works exactly how you'd expect

Cool. I learned something new today. I did have to look at the full video to fully understand the mechanism. But I also did get enough from the 1-min video to form a guess in my head before I watched the full video : )

I have so many questions for you lol.. do you know what the flow rate of the pump is? Does the distance from the water source to the pump matter? is there a minimum height the water source needs to be above the pump? Very interesting concepts.

Hi, the flowrate of the pump is dependent on the height to which you pump the water. The full video on the breurram (link in the description) shows the flow at different heights. The distance to the water source does matter. If you would put this pump in a river you would still have to add a pipe of a few meters. This is needed to make sure the pressure peak with the pump is preserved. If you would not have a pipe pressure would dissipate through the entrance of the pump and the high pressure valve would not open. I am not sure what the minimum height of the water source should be. The spring in the pump is tunable to make the pump work well at different inlet pressures. But if the height is too low the valve will not shut, even with spring tuned to its least tensioned orientation. In the case of a river, you could solve this by building a small dam or other construction to create a larger inlet pressure. If you want to know more you can also check out our written manual (link in description)

"pumps water up the tower without adding any energy." Poorly worded. Potential energy it added to the rising water. It comes from extracting energy from the lower water flow. Now if that lower water flow was just "wasting" energy by flowing down stream, and you have a freely available excess water flow, that's great. You are recovering some of that wastage. Hydraulic rams are cool.

Hi Tuber, Yes you are right. Of course energy to pump water up the tower has to come from somewhere. With this phrase we mean to stress that no external energy, such as electricity is added to the system. The potential energy of the water in the water tank is transformed to kinetic energy which the pump translates back to potential energy for a small portion of the water.

@@WOT_utwente You should have said without adding *external* energy. These hydraulic rams are grossly inefficient but if have a free flow of water ( and hence energy ) they are great. The first time I saw this demonstrated, I had trouble believing it. I think the Romans even used a similar technique but with chambers not valves , though I can't remember where it is. Maybe Avignon.

@@tuberroot1112 I think most of us understood what he meant, and poorly-worded is hardly an accurate descriptor for any of his explanation.
