Just when I was getting ready to put the boat away you're motivating me to get couple more sessions in! I like all the way forward on 84, I'm 200#. I usually adjust my back foot forward in front of the mast about an inch. Gives me better response. I want to learn to do a standing skate style start from the back of the moving boat next....

Love that you guys local, "...nice out, Seahawks won...". Can't wait until April when the boat is back in the water. I picked-up a High Roller 5'2" which I'm going to use with my 84 on Spring Break which will be my first venture into foiling (hope to do some tow work at the resort before the futility of trying on some small rollers). QUESTION: Have you guys ever tried a fill "circuit"? I was scouring youtube trying to learn everything I can about foiling and apparently one of the master moves is to wave transfer right to left on the first wave (a 61cm mast helps w/clearance), then transfer BACK to the second wave on the same side, then transfer 2nd wave left to right, then (with the drivers help) transfer second wave to first wave on the same side. A complete circuit. I've never seen it firmed - but strikes me as the ultimate example of foiling use of the wave behind the boat. I'm sure its a trivial maneuver :).
Hey Justin! Ha - we certainly have tried and done all of those, we just never tried to film it as a circuit. In our video (wave transfer left/right, 2nd to 1st) we demonstrate 2/3s of the circuit. The trick of 2nd to 1st wave transfer is all about the driver....the timing to bring the power back on is key. The hardest one in the circuit is to transfer from the 2nd to the 3rd or from the 3rd to 2nd -- funny angles that are hard to see when on foil. We haven't got that one on video but will make a point of doing so. If nothing else -- now we have our next video challenge :-) -- likely not until spring unless we get more than a couple days!
Fellas, got a bunch of us out there in Georgia drinking the Kool-Aid - question on back foot position, do you move it at all based on mast position and/or wing size? Riding the 71 cm mast and 84 & 76 wing behind a 2016 Axis
Hey BaDaBoom! Great to hear from you. We have a growing Half-Life nation down there in Georgia! Love it! Foot position can be a bit tricky/person specific/wave specific/ etc. In general, we will adjust our backfoot to be between mid mast and leading edge of the mast. Wing has less to do with it than the mast position. That said - we also may adjust the mast position based upon the wing. So for example we like to run the 84cm and 76cm in B slot. The 84cm has more lift so we like it slightly further back in the mast track than the 76cm. Whether you're on first wave or second wave also makes a difference. On first wave I like to have my foot further back because of the carving pressure and the fact that I only pump when doing a trick to the balance point is less important. On the second wave I'll move it forward to provide more pump power when doing transfers and for a better balance point on the 2nd wave. Likely more than you were bargaining for but I hope this helps! Hi Mikevs -- we typically pull at 11.2mph. Most wake boats will fall in the range of 10-12mph. Older ski boats and outboards you should explore 8-12mph looking for that max hump directly behind the boat. Cheers, Tim
another great video....how about toying around with using either the A,B, or C positions on the fuselage? I get a little confused where the optimal position is, what circumstances you would use one position over another, where back foot placement would differ for each position on the fuselage, etc. Unfortunately for us on Lake Hamilton in Arkansas, our lake is down 3 feet and season is over for most of us that have our docks dry for the annual draw down.
Hi Steve - let's be sure to touch base once the water is back in your lake! For Slingshot -- the 84cm works best in the 'B' slot (in our opinion). That said -- it's somewhat subjective and based upon preference. A slot is essentially through the front wing which will have the same effect as moving the mast track farther back....so making it a bit harder to elevate. For smaller wings - through the wing (essentially A slot) works great. Let's reconnect when you're back on the water!
I’m 6’4” 232#. I own a 25 foot Cobalt runabout with a stern drive. Would you recommend the 76 or 84 cm wing for that and do you think I could go ropeless?

You'll definitely be able to drop the rope with the right size foil. I am brand new to foiling and almost dropping the rope completely behind a tournament waterski boat; very small wake. Have fun :)

You can also follow us on Instagram @halflifet.5 For the Infinity 76cm we prefer the A slot with the mast plate ~mid track. If you currently have it all the way back, try it about 1.5" inches further up. Test. Repeat until you have it where you like it. How much do you weigh? For ~175lb folks tend to like it mid track. Of course that depends a bit on the boat, your weight, etc.
You guys kill..I rode the 90cm all winter on a kite and see the difference. But for the summer it's riding behind the boat on the 45cm Question? When you say the white line at the 2 nd wave am I looking for the line on outside or do I want to be in the middle of the white bubble.
To get going behind the boat a 45cm mast is great. While for kiting that 90cm is key to keep the foil from breaching, your fine with 46cm, 61cm, or 71cm behind the boat. If you're having a hard time dropping the rope, give the first wave a try. There's a lot of power and it's very easy to see where you are on the wave. When on the 2nd wave the bubble line shows you the power sweetspot. You can foil on either side of it in short turns as you're getting started trying on the 2nd wave. In general, people have an easier time dropping rope for the first time on the 1st wave because you don't need the visual clues. If you want or need to be on the 2nd practice slacking the line by managing your forward/back speed on foil.
Hey just subscribed! We are new, got the 76cm set up. We have only been out once but none of us could barely get up.....(I was with competitive surfers) so I think it must have something to do with how we are set up.... I am 200lbs but also have a 12 year old that is 90lbs. is there a setting we could both use? we have a 24 inch mast nad it set up in the "A" position.. I just ordered a 18in mast. Any help is much appreciated.
Hi John - where are you located? What model of boat are you behind? Please send me a picture of your setup. I assume front wings down, back wing up. I'll publish a 'how to assemble the Gamma 68' video tomorrow which is the same set up as the 76cm. If you have the back wing on incorrectly the 76cm is very difficult to ride. A position (through the wing) is the preferred position for wake foiling. Start with the mast all the way back in the track. 200lbs to 90lbs is a BIG swing but A position with the mast track all the way back should work for both of you. The difference will be that your 12 year old will need their feet to be further forward on the board. Also - DRIVING IS KEY - be sure to watch this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nX6KnJiMUuA.html Lastly - competitive surfers are used to driving off of there back foot. It's a key aspect to many of the tricks that they do and how they drive hard on bottom turns and off the lip. I'm riding a Stinger board and set up. What should I be riding in terms of mast and wing size. It's my 2nd season riding this board and I cannot go ropeless. I know I'm ready as I kitefoil all winter on a 90cm..just love that but now it's time. Equipment matters so can you help me get set up on this Stinger. The owner is a cool guy but I'm not sure he has the right experience to get me going. Help a dude and much appreciated

Quick question. I have the position dialed behind my boat soft wave. But behind a taller steeper wave I have a tough time keeping the foil down. What should i do?
Good question Donny! Taller and steeper = more fun and harder carving. I love it and it's a great contrast to 2nd wave foiling. I assume you're talking 1st wave. With the rope in hand take a coil or two to move you closer to the steepest part of the wave (outside (smooth water) in of course). Work your way up and down the lower quarter of the wave to get used to the increased steepness. As you become comfortable increase the radius of the turn. If you have the 46cm mast, you may want it on for this to increase stability. Once you got the feel of that heightened wall go ahead and toss the rope and away you go. One of the most fun things to do is to drift back (especially now that you have soft wave skills) to the edge of the power zone, pump once to run at the boat, peel off just as you hit the steep part of the wave, carve as far outside the bubble line as you can and return - it's a blast. When on steeper waves it's faster and the angle of your cut (banking etc) increases so you just want to be ready for it. Have fun and I hope that helps.
Hey Guys, Love what you do and I really have appreciated all of your foil videos so keep up the awesome work! I have an 84 and just getting into things. I looks like to me for the 84 that you mounted the mast into the fuselage rather than into the wing - if that's correct. Did you try both positions and do you have any thoughts on the differences?
Hi Saand! We've found that the 'B' position (mounted in the fuselage) works best for wake foiling with the 84cm. That combined with the mast about 1-2" from the back. That said, it depends upon weight etc. The further the foil is mounted back, the less upward pressure. The further forward, the more the foil wants to come out of the water. So....if you put the mast in 'a' (through the wing) while wake foiling you'll need to work a bit harder to elevate and then likely have a wider stance to maintain it which may be fine to learn. Our recommendation is the 'B' slot on the fuselage with the mast track all the way back. For ~165-180 (intermediate riders) move the track up ~ 1-2". For 190-200lb ~ 2-3" inches up. And for 200+ play with the mast from mid point to the front. It is based upon preferences but as a beginner, go 'b' with mast all the way back and work into your preferences from there. Enjoy!
