Hydroponic Basil: Grow Basil Forever From 1 Plant

This is a fun one for you all. If you use a LOT of hydroponic basil in the kitchen like I do, using the method I outline in this video is an easy way to harvest basil forever and ever off of ONE initial mother plant!
The method is known as the Kratky method of hydroponics, where you use NO electrical parts, no pumps, no airstones. All you do is place a rooted cutting or seedling into a reservoir and let it drink down the water and use up nutrients. When there's no water left, you simply harvest the remaining leaves on a plant and move on to the next one!
You can also try growing basil in a deep water culture system using an airstone if you want.
If you want to create an endless basil supple, all you need to do is stagger your cuttings so you have:
- 1 basil plant rooting
- 1 basil plant in mild growth
- 1 basil plant in aggressive vegetative growth
- 1 basil plant at the end of it's life cycle
As long as you keep ~4 plants going at a time in different stages of the growth cycle, you'll NEVER run out of basil.

Dude, I am a U.S.Army Disabled Veteran, I have combed the net for info on growing Basil & other Plants, for food and sale, I live in the Asian South Pacific, with the coming of the American food shortage, you will do good, You should plant, Purple yams, or sweet potato's, in the ground, people will walk right over them and NOT even know they are standing on Food, anyway I absolutely LOVE your video here, it has really inspired to run with this, And Basil is a BIG cash crop here ! In Italy the Italians who raise Basil for an Herb or to make Pesto are Really RICH ! Thanks again for you help !

That was a excellent video. I'm the one that commented on one of your last video about covering your container. You hit all base's this time. Excellent for the beginners. Lookin forward for next video. One thing you didn't mention is that some do the wicky kraky method with the wick in the water to the net cup. Wich doesn't matter to me.

I remember you Mark! Next video will be about how to farm on a quarter of an acre...it's a long one. Hope you enjoy! And yes, the wick kratky is probably even more efficient. I mention in my 2 Liter Bottle video.

Pretty sure you'd be better off using opaque jars because I think light on the roots can have a negative impact on growth. Maybe you could try painting or duct taping half of the jars to see how they compare.

Great video! I'm hooked. :) I love the idea of not wrapping the jars. It seems to me, a newbie at hydroponics, that if you are doing short time plants like lettuce and such, (20-40 days), you don't need the wrapping. Now I'm off to check out your other videos. Thanks.

That's my logic as well. This is a SIMPLE system, I want to keep the annoyances to a minimum :)
@guyandoren
@guyandoren 5 лет назад
Caroline. I've done it both ways (many times) ie: Kratky basil with 100% light block and Kratky basil with no light block. There is no question whatsoever that light block is essential even within a 40 day grow window. The only containers that I ever found algae in were those exposed to light. The block has to be 100% to prevent algae growth. Algae is not fatal to the plant but it does reduce growth/yield and in some cases it may contribute to more harmful pathogens being introduced to the system.

I have young herbs (basil, chives, chamomile, lemongrass) that I bought last week and planted in too small of a container w/little drainage. I'd like to convert them into hydroponics. In this case I wouldn't need the rock wool and just carefully clean the roots and shove them into the net pot...is that right? Thanks.

5:55 it's called a heading cut. Thanks for the info on the video, this is actually exactly what I was looking for with my purple opal basil plant and tons of extra salsa jars. I've painted most of my jars black instead of worrying about wrapping, a strip of thin pin-striping tape from an auto store or thin painters tape will give you enough room to look in at the water level and at the condition of the roots.

Good video! Speeding up the handling sequences is time saving for the viewer! My question is what pH and EC you use for Basil? Jeb uses 7,8 pH in his RU-vid video. Also if you fill more water - is it smart to use condensed water at that?
@epicgardening
@epicgardening 6 лет назад
I go a bit more acidic than that, somewhere in the 6.5 range. I am not sure what you mean by condensed water?
@shapeshifter1364
@shapeshifter1364 6 лет назад
Water from a dehumidifier ;-) Condensed definition: Reduced in volume, area, length, or scope. / Humidity from air - condensed/ fused to water (sorry for bad English.) That is to dilute nutrients you put in the water as the water is being used by the plant - therefor measuring EC. Also - what´s the name of the music in the beginning of the video (like!).

So is this nutrient a secret. I went on Reddit and a few other sites asking about it. I thought maybe there were several things you needed to mix, and was told no, there is definitely a single nutrient mixture that a few companies put out for the purpose of just growing basil. They said only thing you might need to do is check the PH balance from time to time and if it comes off ideal, you may need to work on that, but otherwise you can buy a single hydro food that is all in one for your hydroponic basil growing. However, when I asked what, things got bad vague and I received no answers. Can anyone give me a hand with this, because you answered every question I was not looking for in this video, as it was all common sense. I just need to know the nutrient part. We can talk in code if you want, I know PGP encryption if it's a big secret. LOL, what goes in the water mate. I only have 2 months to get my operation sorted out here. What do I need to buy? Help me, I will buy it from you, but your link is busted.

Question. Does cloning vs from seed affect the flavor potency or sweetness? How about cloning from a plant thats already bolted?
@epicgardening
@epicgardening 4 года назад
Cloning from already bolted does, because you typically don't get as robust vegetative growth. Cloning from younger vegetative growing tips seems to just create a new baby plant, so flavor is same as the mother
