How do you choose the best nutrients for your setup? Synthetic? Organic? Can you even use organic in hydroponics?
Plus, river surfing because I saw some guys doing it and thought it was pretty cool.

Circling back to that tshirt shop on the moon, are you still looking for space biznis partners? I know I’m a few months late but C-19 got me WFH rn and I’ve got time. As a space biznisman I can bring a lot to a space partnership- including (but not limited to) my original framed XFiles poster “I want to believe” and a framed certificate from the scholarly periodical teen beat magazine which testified that I am “Outta This World!!!” (It has 3 exclamation marks which correspond to my space rank and an accurate rending of George Clinton wearing sunglasses that are shaped like a double thumbs up.) Thank you for considering my qualifications as your future space biznis partner. I look forward to working with you in our lunar souvenir shop. -Joe, a human Earth hydrofarmer

Chemical/mineral fertilizers are highly water soluble. Once they are dissolved, the ions dissociate and they are completely bio-available. In fact, the plant can't not take them up. Bacteria or fungi play no role. The best is to buy bulk commercial grade fertilizers and then mix them yourself. But you then have a bulk amount, and you have to do the math and mixing yourself. The alternative is to buy way more expensive liquid ones. Which is the same stuff, but others already did all the work, slammed a cool logo on the bottle, as if they are selling whey protein, and increased the price 50-fold. Using organic fertilizer for hydroponics is very tricky.

Thanks for helping me make a decision after watching a video. I'm gonna buy General Hydroponics because I'm not that lazy. And I don't need to worry about the chef life of 2 years. They last longer shout of forum. And when you buy a liquid form fertilizer, you're paying the water but powder form. You save a lot more money.

I run RDWC system of 50gal. I use General Hydro Pro series, which I don't really see for sale any more as a combo pack; I believe they've rebranded one or two of the supplement products. I've had great success out the gate, I used their middle of the road plan off their feeding chart without any hiccup. Now I'm questioning how much I'm wasting, mind you I flush the system every two weeks to avoid the water becoming brackish. Self taught here, on my second grow now so I'm all ears at this stage of the game.

You can take masterblend (or any NPPK fertalizer that has micro nutrients) and mix it into a concentrated liquid. Very simple mix 150grams masterblend (or schults, miricle grow etc) and 75 grams of epsom salts with 1 litre (or pint) or Distilled water (it has to be distilled) then put it in a bottle. Mix 150 grams of calcium nitrate and 1 litre of distilled water. Use warm water for easier mixing. for dosing it is around 60mls (4 table spoons) for a 5gallon (19litre) bucket. use a PPM meter should be around 900 for baby plants and 1600 for adult plants. Increase the PPM when the temperature is cold and decrease it for the heat. I have tested the regular 20-20-20 miracle grow and the masterblend with excellent results from both. The master blend was a little better on stuff that fruits and it is a lot cheaper as it is sold in bulk.

I used 3 part GH, but it becomes 4 part quickly, when you also have to get the GH calcium. For that reason, this year, I tried a one bottle solution (Dyna-Gro Bloom) on my outdoor 5gal hydro-bucket tomatoes, start to finish. My test was only 2 buckets, one plant each. Worked great. I even used my tap water and never even checked the pH. I wanted to see how lazy i could be with it. hardest part was only having to keep the bucket topped off with water. Those tomatoes drink a LOT in summer. Easily over 5gal a week. And i didnt add nutes very often, either. I found they need less nutes than i thought.

I hear you. I love growing things, but I have lots of things to do..kids, work, etc. Sometimes the lazy way is the best I can do. Tomatoes you have to have additional calcium. My two tomato plants would drain my 5 gallon reservoir every single day in the late summer. If I do it again, I am going to get a much bigger reservoir. How did your tomatoes turn out?
@cbluebeard
@cbluebeard 4 года назад
@@OldPlanty Yeah, a bigger reservoir would be the way to go. Unfortunately, the squirrels took most of the tomatoes, and the ones they left, the stink bugs got to. Can't catch a break! I did end up getting a few tomatoes at the end of the season, when the squirrels moved into the nearby pecan trees to begin burying the nuts.

I’ve ran Maxigrow for the last couple years. Great product. I also have Maxibloom which I add to supplement phosphorus. Maxigrow on its own at 1.8 will result in your tomato’s being phosphorus deficient and have purple underside of the leaves. Been mixing the solution 4grams Maxigrow and 1 gram Maxibloom per gallon and haven’t had any deficiencies since. I’m running RO water. With RO water the ph after adding nutrients is about 3.5. On my system I use caustic from my work to bring it up to the 6 range. Last year I was using city water with just a carbon filter for chlorine. Used phosphoric acid to bring it down but didn’t have a phosphorus deficiency because of that. Or at least I suspect that’s why.

I know this is an older video, but I hope someone can answer a fundamental question for me. I'm new to growing herbs in an inexpensive 12-slot hydroponic system (light/pump/etc.). The instructions tell me to add nutrients every 2 weeks, and the original instructions were to add 5 ml of nutrients per liter (the container holds around 5 liters of water). I went down about 1/2 liter of water in the first two weeks. Do I still add 5 ml x 5 liters (25 ml) or 2.5 ml (5 ml x 0.5 l of water) of nutrients? I know this is basic, but the instructions in my kit don't tell me. Thanks for any help.

Do you have a PPM reader? If so, take a reading. If it’s a high reading(higher than you started with), top it off with just water. Sometimes, when it’s hot, the plants will absorb more water than nutrients, so sometimes you only need to top it off with water. If the solution PPM, before adding water was around where you started(or if it was under), then add some nutrients to it. You’ll get better at gauging things over time and the more you do it. Good luck
@fgjf1079
@fgjf1079 11 месяцев назад
I just reread your message. Since it has been two weeks, and not dealing with that much nutrients, you should just dump the remaining solution and replace it with new solution. I would take this route, specially if you don’t have a PPM meter.

plants tend to use more or less of certain nutrients and the water is stagnant (can fix with aquarium air pump)

Calculate how much your topping off the water. Only change it out after you've topped off the entire reservoir of water. Then add nutrients.
@victoriadegand2393
@victoriadegand2393 Год назад
That’s my question. I thought one of the points of Kratky was to NOT toss the water. Just top off if necessary? I’m confused.

@@robertguay3773 not true at all! Depends on the type of tomatoes! I have had a 6 foot tall cherry tomato in a 5 gallon bucket since October and it’s on its 2 round of fruit and I’ve only filled it up 3 times, I have Red Robin’s and tiny Tim’s in a 5 gallon and it will have water left after all tomatoes are ripe. @@GodsChild145I have 4 jalapeno plants in a 30gal Brute trash can, about 2ft tall now, and have already blooming and producing peppers. They have not used a whole lot of water up to this point, and should hopefully make it through the rest of the season. They’re much more water efficient than when I grew zucchini in that same setup. I’m guessing that the large leaves of the zucchini perspired a lot more moisture.
