Hydropower Screw Turbines | How it works

The new range of the Landustrie hydropower screw turbines. Here we show you how it works...
We all know the traditional application of the archimedean screw pump where water is pumped up from a lower to a higher level. The reversal of its function provides an efficient means of saving energy. The main advantage of a screw pump is that it is taylor made to the specific installation and therefore extremely efficient for a wide range.
An efficient use of water power is already achieved at a level difference of 1 meter and a capacity of 500 l/sec. The largest capacity and level difference for hydropower screws is as much as 15000 l/sec. at 10 meter.
Benefits of hydropower screws:
• Highest efficiency (up to 86%)
• Simple installation
• Easy implementation in existing situations
• Extremely fish friendly
• Insensitive to clogging
• Low maintenance costs
• Long life time
• Improvement of water quality
• 24/24 energy supply
• Active flow control without extra losses
• Possibility to switch over to pump function
• Self-regulating to changing water flow...

Hi Gabriel. I know what you mean you are right at some point. In reality the screw rotates faster. However a lot of research went into this subject that proofs no damage on the fish whatsoever. During these tests the fish were netted out after each passage and assessed for damage, including pinch marks, scuffing to the skin, haematoma and strike marks from the leading edge. Each fish passed through several times, with a rest period of 2-3 hours between passages. Tests by Fishtek Consulting.

Make one that kills the fish and sends them to a freezer which in turn is powered partly by the turbine itself maybe? Include a sensor that tells the cellphone when the freezer is full of fish :)

I like this concept. Who ever designed it could probably try building a small model with 45 degrees (like in ballistics) and more spacing between the blades (the more space the more mass of water on each segment and less mass of the mechanism). Only building the models we can know if the increased velocity helps to increase the total output of energy.

Why are the screws left open on the top ? Wouldn't it be more efficient if it was completely encased ?
@matthewbucknall8350
@matthewbucknall8350 7 лет назад
If you encased the screw and completely filled the enclosure with water you'd essentially just end up with a pipe. Water would flow freely around the helix without exerting any appreciable torsional force on the screw's axle. The water needs to be divided up such that it cannot flow from one section of the screw to the next.
@pstrap1311
@pstrap1311 7 лет назад
Matthew Bucknall no that's not true. it was just for the purpose of visibility of the animation. the weight of the water exerts force upon the uphill side of the blade making the axle turn even if the pipe is full.
@STUDIOLEX
@STUDIOLEX 7 лет назад
It's both possible depending on various needs....
@liamcooper5202
@liamcooper5202 6 лет назад
Patrick Donohoe you would get less usable force if the screw was fully submerged. Water will for the most part just flow around the screw exerting very little force.
@paullangford8179
@paullangford8179 6 лет назад
It works by the flow through the "cups" of the descending screw. It's the weight of the water that produces the power, so all that is required is that the screw begins at the high water level. Mind you, a ramp on the screw at the top will chop up fewer fish..

I want to use an archimedes screw turbine on my property, with 20 liters water per second and a "head" of 2.5 to 3 meters. The turbine then can always run (be operarional) and when the sun shines, pomps can pump water from a 8000 liter underground reservoir to a "water tower" 3 meter tall. Good idea?

You have a typo in the title. Should write Archimedean. What is the market status of these turbines? Or, put another way, what is the market adoption evolution of them: are they being used more often or is their market shrinking? I see this technology as being ecologically superior to other dam constructions. Visited a few dams and those surely won't allow fish and crustacean moving from A to B.
@STUDIOLEX
@STUDIOLEX 9 лет назад
***** Thanks for pointing out that typo :-) The hydropower screws and dam constructions are to different solutions for 2 different situations. Screw turbines require slow streaming water and are a great solution for remote areas where a relative small investment can help in the power supply of remote villages.

that screw spin because water descend downhill, the gravity pull water to descend downhill. to turn around the screw on the other way the water must ascend uphill, fighting gravity. what if the cloud gives rain on the valley, not on the hill.

you guys got it all wrong... archimedes designed this to bring water from a low level to a higher level, not to be used as a generator. why do you think we use the pelton, francis, wells, and kaplan turbines? btw that idea is very old and instead of trying to make it work why don't you spend your efforts in making a new, better, design.
@RASunGod50
@RASunGod50 9 лет назад
Keep thinking in the box man. You sound like your typical institutionalized and disgruntled engineer. I love it when people express their opinion as fact by just throwing out terms to degrade sound ideas. The pelton, francis, wells, and kaplan turbines are very efficient, but environmentally inferior when you compare it to the Archimedean screw. You are also wrong about the Archimedean screw being only used to bring water form a low level to a higher level. Although Archimedes primarily used it to operate in this manner, it was quickly discovered that they could harness a continual form of power to grind agriculturally-grown food and operate a crude bellow used in support of blacksmith (etc) operations. Why don't you spend your efforts doing more research before you make ambiguous accusations. Try supporting out of the box thinking, rather than waste your breath by repeating what you were only taught.

You appear to have at least some understanding of mechanics/engineering, so you surely should be able to understand that no one tool is perfect for every task. Simply put, these screws are used for applications where they are more efficient then turbines or other means of converting the water's energy into electro/mechanical energy or are used to convert the energy with substantially lower fish mortality.
