Spraying the deck on a 1978 Hydrostream Viking/Vking with metal flake gelcoat. Buffed using 3M Perfect-It Gelcoat. Full write up here: www.screamandfly.com/showthre... Music: Bendsound.com
Wow 😳 Incredible 😍. I rarely comment. But, this has me transported to my youth watching all manner of metal flake boats racing down the river. Thanks for sharing! 🙏🏼
After spraying automotive paint on the mid and lower I can say that gel is much more forgiving when spraying. You just need to following the procedures properly.
Thanks! There’s some flaws I can find, but overall very happy with my first attempt at gel. I’ve done the entire build myself, only plan to outsource the upholstery work. Just because I don’t want to invest in the equipment.
Just wanted to say THANK YOU ! after watching you flake this boat....made me decide to try metal flaking my 1984 Ranger 392-V. Quotes were crazy high....and i have that awesome, cheap Chinese gun. Wish me luck. Hope mine turns out half as amazing as yours turned out.
I’ve bought two hydrostreams since I’ve found your channel. Someone stop me. I’ll be painting one this winter so be ready to answer a question or five haha. You did great work
Welcome to the club! haha I've been getting the itch to start itching agin on another project. But I can't bring myself to do it agin in my attached 2 car garage. No where for this boat and my hot rod to go. Feel free to ask away! Find me on IG @78_hydrostream and shoot me a DM.
Damn I wish I had the time to do my bass boat. I’m in the army and have been wanting to fully restore my 93 skeeter but time kinda screws that up. Great work man
Did a Procraft the same way, people do not know of the time and labor involved, 40hrs of sand and buff makes it all worth it, Great job and A Great Boat!!!!! Boat now needs a 2.5 Merc outback!!
My new project is a 21 checkmate, complete rebuild, new everything. Found a 1989 300 Merc and going to do a full resto on that also. Going with same colors you used with a Black bottom
nice job, I must redone gelcoat on mine gt 150.can you explain ,write, all 6 layer? first one yellow is filler? 2 than you go with silver, silver is also some kind of filler or base? 3 I think black is base?,4 is flake, what size of flake and with whath you mix flake to get fluid? a 3 layer blue paint? did you put some flake in blue paint? 4 layer clear topcoat, did you also put some flake in clear topcoat? thanks
The yellow and grey are both primers. Black base was gelcoat, as well as the silver flake mixed with clear gel. There is no color in the gel, it is only clear gelcoat with silver or blue metal flake mixed in. Finial layer of clear is plain clear gelcoat, no flake in the final layer. The link in the description explains it very well.
At "5:00" mark, during the wet sanding and ample water, and warm weather based on your dress... do you ever have humidity issues with paint later as I'm sure the garage does not dry out completely...???
I can’t say for sure. The only real issue I had with the gel coat was it wanting to cure super fast when I shot the deck. It was a hot July day. My AC was having a hard time keeping up.
Fantastic job only 1 Question is after sanding with fine paper like 600 or 800 why not just clear it instead of polishing with a good quality clear would save a lot of polishing and as well seal the gel coat from getting omeasos I think it's called where the water gets into the gel coat done that a few times on boats ...
That very well could be done. I just buffed it and will keep a good coat of wax on it. I'm not an experienced painter and the gel is much more forgiving when spraying.
I got everything, except the flake, from Express Composites in Minneapolis. I know they have a website do online ordering, but their site looks to be down at the moment. Very helpful folks and quality products.
It was already prepared in this video. I sanded with 80 grit paper then laid Duratech vinylester primer, block sanded that with 80 grit and started spraying gelcoat.
Im about to attempt to restore an old nitro bass boat and want to flake it. Still gotta find a gelcoat to use. Just curious, it looked like you hand sanded it all after the final clear coat? Would using an orbital be fine?
I used a block so that the finished product would have a super flat finish. You could use and orbital or a DA and it will sand out smooth and buff to a shine, but it won’t be very flat, it will end up kinda wavy. I can assure you that the original finish on this boat was no where near as flat as it is now after being block sanded. There’s a few spots where I just used a DA and that looks close to the factory finish.
@@craigbielsky115 yeah, there’s a lot of sanding. I used about 5 gal of clear gel, but ended up dumping a few quarts that cured in the gun. There’s maybe 2lbs on the whole boat. That’s 4 fluid OZ, or about 1/2 Cup. I ordered 5lbs and have a ton left over.
T his this is David Iam wanting to flake my bass boat can you tell me what I need to get I can spray very good never mixed always done for me . I have a 3.0 gravity feed gun that will shoot big flake like iam wanting can you tell me what I need iam wanting 3 differnt colors and extra clear or can u give me a name of a shinny shinny clear gel . Thank u so much waiting to hear from you and great job on hydro boat wow beautiful.
@@TNels you were blowing .025 through a standard gun? I thought that mass req a flake master dealing or shutz gun or diy something...??? Which monster flake do you find best? Looking at the Roth 025's....
@@GotScout Yep, a $35 harbor freight gun, 2.5mm tip. Ran the fluid valve wide open with barely any pressure on the fan, and about 45psi at the gun. If I did it agin I would try to find a 3.0 or 3.5 tip though. I liked the flake from vintagepaint.biz the best. It was the only place I could find that sold square flake. Their website seems kinda sketch, but it's legit. All the stuff at Roth I found was octagon and I don't think that has the same pop as square, and its wrong for my era boat.
Why is it dull afterwards and you have to sand and buff it!?!? If it's clear coat then why is it dull!? When you get done spraying clear on a vehicle it's shiny! I thought he was sanding after the color coat wich is a nono because you cut the metal flakes with the sandpaper so I'm not sure what's going on here.. 🤔
I don't know the chemical properties that cause that. But this is gel coat and not paint, it behaves very differently. It lays down super thick with tons of orange peel. I sanded the final layer of clear after the flake was down. Keep in mind this lays down at 20-30 mils, so sanding the last coat of clear doesn't get into the layer with the flake.
