@@JoeandAngie Infantile? Animals have a clear understanding of dominance in the animal kingdom and who is in charge. And it's very clear that the lion knows this, hence why it purposely let the hyena (something that it clearly sees as beneath him) suffer, instead of just killing it. Animals do not experience pride (or even other emotions) the same way humans do, but there is clearly a sense of accomplishment in protecting the family and letting the hyena suffer.

@@dritzzdarkwood4727 I took a wrong turn at a zoo once and ended up at the fence of the lion enclosure, and stood about 6 feet from a very large male sunbathing on a rock. It ignored me for about a minute or so, then casually looked at me and let out this short, guttural noise that was physically so shocking it felt like my soul left my body. I was in no danger because of the fence, but that didn't keep me from involuntarily shuddering in full terror. Insane feeling; never experienced anything like it. Then the lion calmly went back to staring off into the distance haha.

HerocomeCheerios - my point being, the lioness is a more competent hunter due to her speed and as such, handles such things. similarly, the male lion is more heavily muscled , significantly heavier , and more capable of inflicting damage. that makes him the last word where territorial conflict and / or a physical response to aggression is required. as to your point about "ronin" lions..... i.e. without a pride , yes obviously both sexes are capable of successful hunting , however the lioness is the much more proficient of the two.

I hate it when people compare animals like "that animal would beat that animal". You could say that this species has a higher probability of beating the other species, but that is in nearly all cases obvious. I could say a guinea pig can kill a lion, if it somehow manages to crawl up its butthole and constipate it so badly that it dies from it.

Both of you are wrong. The hyena did not die. Ive seen that bbc episode, what happened next is the hyena slowly started recovering. Eventually it got up and ran away before the lions came back. I was blown away, i was certain it was dead. I remember thinking how tough hyenas are.
