THIS STORY:
Hymie Weiss was the leader of the North-Side gang in Chicago after the murder of Dean "Dion" O’Banion in 1924. He proved also to be a fierce rival of Al Capone and his gang. After the death of his boss in 1924, he swore to seek revenge on his killers: Capone's men.
Patrick "Paddy" Murray was Hymie's bodyguard.
Hymie tried to get Big Al, but failed.
In the fall of 1926, Al Capone sent his best hitmen to stake out the headquarters of Hymie Weiss on State Street in downtown Chicago. Two gunmen hiding in nearby rooming house opened fire with a sub-machine gun and shotgun at Weiss, and his associates.

The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.

I am Paddy Murray's great-granddaughter and have a story about Margarite. She was a very good singer and would compete in singing contests and would often win. The night before her tragic accident she had won one such contest and against her mothers wishes was crossing the street to go to the candy store to spend her winnings. She was so excited she ran across the street without looking and was struck by a vehicle and dragged for quite aways before the car stopped. I was told this story by Paddy and Mary's oldest daughter, Geraldine (Murray) LaPorte; who is the tall girl pictured in the family photo you showed and my grandmother. My grandmother, Gerry or Ger-ger for short, told me this story many times. As I got older I came realize that she was using that story as a lesson that I should obey my mother or something tragic like Margarite's demise could happen to me. You should talk to my Mother, Patricia, Geraldine's daughter and Paddy's granddaughter for additional information. I have your phone number and will text you so you have mine.

Public Enemy with James Cagney was loosely based on Hymie Weiss. The scene where James Cagney pushes a grapefruit in the face of Mae Clark was attributed to Hymie Weiss but he used an omelet-too messy for the movie. Cagney had spoken of basing his character on Hymie Weiss.

I low key love how all these gangsters are buried a skip and a hop away from each other. Capone, Weiss, O'Bannon, Drucci, McGern, all buried in Mt. Carmel, not to mention later mafia figures like Sam Giancana. Makes you wonder what arguments they'd have if those graves could talk.

Hymie Weiss planned the attack on Capone. He wanted revenge for the murder of Dean O’Banion, who had been a friend since childhood. He knew Capone frequented the cafe at the Hawthorn Hotel, in Cicero, IL. After the gunfire from several cars had stopped, Capone started to get up off the floor, but his bodyguard stopped him. It was then the final two cars sprayed the cafe with more bullets. Capone was unhurt and decided then he could not deal with Weiss any longer. There had been some attempts to peacefully divide the gang’s’ territories. Two of Capone’s men rented an upstairs room across from Schofields flower shop, Weiss’ headquarters, and waited for their opportunity. From their vantage point, they opened fire as they saw Weiss exit his car. The police later examined the rented room and concluded the gunman must have been there for days, judging by the pile of cigarette butts on the floor.

The stories from the graves never end in this cemetery. Not sure if this is OK to say here, but what amazes me so much is that from my experience, the Catholic religion was always so self-righteous to me and had just as high expectations for their parishioners and yet they have a cemetery full of well-known hoodlums who are probably all burning in hell right now, I never did understand that. Btw, you know I was raised Catholic even attending Catholic school, so I have the upbringing behind me to say what I said and hope not to offend anyone. It has just been my observation over the years. Ron, you always tell such great stories, I love them all, it's incredible what stories you have found over the years. Your one of a kind and that's a great thing. Thanks for all of your hard work!
