I can never get enough of that lush and heartfelt trombone section solo in the beginning. It moves me everytime.

The tuba solo with brass at 2:12 is my favorite section in the whole piece. Just plain beautiful.

yeah that's the best, but the part with the strings in octaves is a close second for me

Bar 63, with the string counterpoint is absolutely enchanting.

That's my favorite part, all the strings (minus basses) playing that line in octaves is so fun to hear with the choir and brass playing the hymn

@@AnthonyOTooleMusic Yes! And the original soundtrack recording is the only rendition I've heard that gets the exact dynamic and rhythmic balance between them all just right.

Such a beautiful piece. I never imagined I'd get a chance to look at the score. I like how slowly the piece builds up, never really going above piano (mezzo-piano at the most) until the big buildup. It's like John Williams wanted to leave us to our thoughts and wrote his music to be a sort of backdrop to them. Anyway, thank you! Keep up the good work. I fully intend to become a patron come the start of the month.

One of Williams's masterworks. Great analysis. Really enjoyed it.

I think he perfectly articulated and memorialized the feelings and sacrifices of everyone who went through that war (WWII). And the piece stands on it's own without the film.

@@AnthonyOTooleMusic Precisely, I love this piece for that. The recording with the Mormon tabernacle choir perfectly captures this feeling.

See, Tony. 1:54 - 2:45. That's it. That's the kind of brass I want to write!
@AnthonyOTooleMusic
@AnthonyOTooleMusic 4 года назад
maybe it's just me, but that kind of writing isn't hard to achieve in terms of how to orchestrate, it's more the notes and voicings of the chords. Once you know how to pick the good notes then you can put it onto the brass, strings, woodwinds, etc and they'll sound good inherently.

If you used a figured bass, it would really remind me of Bach. ; ) jk, it already does in a few ways. edit: But then again, I don't think Bach would have broken all the voice-leading rules Williams does, nor used the same chord progressions, I guess that's what makes him modern though. And honestly, I don't know a composer who likes whole step modulations more than Mr. John Williams. does.

One nit: in m. 34 you say CM7 (4th inversion). There is no 4th inversion in seventh chords. Only three inversions.

I could not disagree more. I had read that Williams intended the piece to be understated. All you need to know about the composer's intentions reside in the title. I believe you have missed the point.
