Ehh, With a bit of practice, sure, the game isn't actually that hard, and this coming from someone who typically SUCKS at video games requiring skill rather than strategy.
Actually it kind of is. With experience, you get better at playing the game and recognizing when the enemies are telegraphing their attacks. When I eventually got around to it, I managed to beat hanged man in a naked boss rush in like three attempts. Whereas the first time I ever fought him, it took me over an hour to beat him because I just couldn't figure out how to get away from him, and even then, I lucked out because I had a powerup that gave me the tiniest edge. I consider Hanged Man and Heirophant to be the most difficult bosses, and I was _really_ dreading fighting them without powerups because of my earlier experience of getting my ass handed to me by the hanged man. But I managed and surprised myself. The hardest, most overwhelming part of the game, by far, is horde mode. That part is absolute, pure evil. No matter how experienced you are with the game, you will be hard-pressed to survive ten rounds of that shit. I'm sure if you play the game again, you'll notice the bosses are quite a bit easier than you remember, despite your 10-month hiatus from the game.
Actually, if you want to get good at fighting the bosses, just play the boss rush. That's where I first noticed HM telegraphing his attacks and mustered up the confidence to do all three. The boss rush increases in difficulty with each mode (until the aforementioned naked mode, where you don your new-game equipment and nothing else), and forces you to conserve health, so you'll find yourself suiciding on bosses because you're thinking ahead and want to make sure you have enough health for the hard ones. This forces you to learn how to fight them without tanking damage and thus you git gud.
Was anyone else unnerved in the Judgement fight? He isn’t the hardest boss, but just the atmosphere and the weird shrieks he makes really put me on edge.
It's actually two birds standing on each others' shoulders. It's showing how the whole religious cult is built on a lie. (The story of the North is that the birds were a religious group, but then there as a schism between the regular bird-people and a new fanatic religious cult whose beliefs were built on violence and sacrifice). After a while the religious conflict turned violent and the eggs of the old-birds were destroyed (apart from the ones saved and taken away by the bird-hermit you find in the northern zone).
The thing that bugs me is the teleportation from judgement to the Immortal Cell at the end of the game. It indicates that the fight against Judgement didn't happened, that it was actually a projection of the Drifters conscience. There is evidence to support that too: The Guardian tells you about his visions and, in it, Judgement takes a rather different form, as if made from individual experience, from individual fear. Also, there is NO mention of Judgement OR Anubis in the games recorded history, aside from the wall sculpture that the drifter sees in his visions. I think that both Anubis and Judgement are attempts to make sense of the decaying world that people are experiencing. The kind of experience one would have when trying to formulate meaning out of such a chaotic situation... Still...the fact that the Guardian tells the Drifter about Anubis seems to indicate the deeper truth of their accessments.
First time hearing it while fighting the Summoner, it hit me like a truck. You KNEW you were nearing the endgame by that music alone, not to mention the absolute bullet hell

3:45 This intro was awesome my first time playing. From the buildup of the music that came before, almost perfectly transitioning into this. It's the same song, but the beat and the chords just totally added a whole new layer of awesome. The fight was hard as shit though.
The dynamic music transition is THE BEST in that scene. The two moments that stuck the most with me were that one, and the scene just after the tutorial, when you step onto a ledge and suddenly the camera pans and the music swells to show you these rolling mountains with a huge dead Titan resting on them.
I wish the game had more mini bosses like the south did in each region while having a main boss at the end. Fighting the mini bosses in the south was kinda fun. The man with the scythe and the one with the bow and arrow were honestly pretty fun due to how fast and aggressive the combat can be. The west and north bosses as well as the final were my favorite.
Despite its many faults... HLD had one of the best ending sequences of any game ever... Such a bittersweet, melancholy, sentimental resolution to your journey.
@@walkingmarshmallow6895 The creator dealing with his congenital heart disease that can kill him at any point is analogous to the Drifter having a condition that terrorizes him and I think can similarly kill him at any moment. At the end of the game, (BIG SPOILERS) when the Drifter dies, he does so by destroying the Immortal Cell which is a representation of artificially extending life, but by simultaneously corrupting that life to a point where it can't be enjoyable. Anubis, the god of death, leaves the Drifter to die a peaceful and natural death. I think the game is saying that death doesn't have to be bad or something to fear (acceptance of death as something natural and not necessarily an end). I am assuming that the creator has an understanding of death as something that will reach him at some point, but he has already made peace with it and recognizes it as something beautiful and (somewhat) natural, giving the life he lives all the more meaning. This is just my reading of it though
it was the other way around for me! Swarms were manageable and the one-hit-penalty pushed me to master the games' horde combat. Bosses, on the other hand, were hell for me and where 50% of my 5.5 hour run went haha
For me the animation on end of every boss fight (not on the last od course) drifter just rams his blade in the ground without thinking he can destroy it or somenthing, only because it's energy blade and it can be summoned in every moment
It's that damn lunging attack. Everything else is manageable, even when he summons knights, but that lunge covers a lot of ground very quickly - not to mention the hitbox, which isn't super reliable
I managed to defeat Hanged Man on my first attempt on my most recent playthrough. But it took me like five tries til I finally defeated Judgement, even with the Railgun.
here are all the bosses ranked from easiest to hardest imo: The Summoner Toad King Archer (Tower) The Sorcerer The Reaper Archer (South) Judgement/Hal Hanged Man Hierophant here is why The Summoner: Just remove his fricking bots and he's pretty pathetic. Toad King: Little harder but just attack his tiny plant guys when he's near them and he's vulnerable. Archer (Tower): I play on Switch so I have him but I used to think he was like 2nd hardest but if you look for the flashing red eye in one of his clones and attack it then he cancels his attack and you get free damage. The Sorcerer: He is kinda hard cuz of the balls he shoots and the floor removal but if you have the Bullet Reflect and Shield he'll be 10x easier but still hard. The Reaper: The fact that he throws his Scythe makes him harder and that he spins it around him. Archer (South): The million bullets he shoots and the mines make him hard but i randomly killed him because when he set the mines he was right next to me and when i was next to a mine and i set it off by accident and killed him but leaving me at 1 hp. Judgement/Hal: I mean he is the last boss so he should be the hardest right? No. Reflect his bullets to get damage while he's shooting his beam and you can just dash away from the beam, and his charge is pretty predictable. Hard but not hard enough. Hanged Man: His slashes do 2 damage and his bullets are annoying as hell AND HE SUMMONS SAMURAI'S! and it's annoying to deal with 1 boss and 1 normal 5 hp enemy. Finally Hierophant: I hate how he just teleports to the other corner and camps you out while you have purple square things and bird guys chasing you. idk why i wrote an entire 6 paragraphs but that's why i ranked them that way.
All bosses are quite easy on my opinion but the third one (bird boss) is hella imprssive. I found this one so hard on my playthrough. No damage on this one. Wow
heirophant is easy beans as long as you have multi dash, but you might have to take a few tries. Hanged man is the hardest in the game by a long shot, but you can abuse freeze frames in every boss fight. by spamming attacks you can essentially put the bosses in slow motion so you can pound them while they wind up for an attack, meaning you can get the south bosses in about 20 seconds or so each

There's an easier way to beat the frog guy quickly and without getting hit. Walk up to him, alternate between sword and gun to get about 5 hits in, dash back while he's preparing to slam his fists on you. Wash, rinse, and repeat. You can sap him all the way down and he'll never finish his first phase because you keep interrupting him.
From what I remember, here are my strategies for fighting the bosses. I never went for no-hit, but my experience with the boss rush mode forced me to git gud. Hanged man: When he's running at you, run at him, and pay attention. He will telegraph his attack (i.e. just like in a real fight, he'll make a subtle motion that will give away the fact that he's about to attack). Time your dash so that you're out of the way when he strikes the ground, and if you've gotten good enough at it, go ahead and get 2 or 3 strikes in just before dashing. This should give you enough time to dash again for his next attack if you don't have the multi-dash power-up. Get three hits in again, and dash in time for his next telegraph. He does the sword slam three times, so after the third one, be sure to get away before he moves on to phase two. After the crystals have gone out, you can get in three hits before he moves on to phase three. After which, you want to move away so you don't get shot. Then you just strike back the blasts (or avoid them if you don't have that powerup) and move in for some more strikes, being careful to watch out for his phase one attack, because he's either about to telegraph that or summon some minions, depending on how much damage you've done to him. Heirophant: run away and then run back to get some hits in, then avoid the + or x-shaped formations he creates under you. After two of his phase-1 attacks, he will go to the center and summon some birds. Use the sword and gun to spam 5-9 hits on him before the birds get to you. Then dash away so they miss and get a few more hits on the boss before he teleports to another corner. Wash rinse and repeat until he moves on to phase-3 (staying in the corners and conjuring alternating rows and colums), at which points you can just wail on him. Frog guy: walk up, strike 3 times, dash back, wash rinse and repeat, he'll never get to phase-2. Sentients: Scythe guy: This guy's pretty easy, just dash towards him as he's about to strike, and you'll zig and he'll zag and miss you. Then he'll throw his scythe. So be about two dashes away from him, then dash, dash, dash, strike strike strike, dash, dash. He'll either miss a strike or start chasing you because you got away too fast. If you don't have the dash powerup, stay about one dash distance away from him, and when he throws his scythe, use the same tactic you use to fight the hissing plants: dash in a perpendicular direction. Then dash, strike, strike, strike, and dash back so he misses you. Either way, he's easy so long as you don't fuck up. Drone guy: This guy is a little tricky, but he's easy once you figure out what to do. Immediately open the fight by wailing on him with the alternating sword/gun trick. Once he starts flashing purple, get away. Then avoid the torrent of gunfire by taking cover or bullet-helling. The drones will start firing pairs of shots at you, which is easy to avoid. Once you get close to him, you'll see a purple/red square flash to his side. That's his telegraph. He's about to charge. Just make sure to dodge, and you can start wailing on him until he goes back to phase-1. Arrow guy: He will shoot arrows three times, then sit down and shoot some landmines. Avoid the arrows at all costs. It's not worth attempting a strike. Your chance to wail on him is when he's sitting down. So make it count. You can also get rid of the mines by running over them and dashing when you hear them beep. If you time it right, you'll escape the blast and be rid of a nuisance. Blast guy: Be on the opposite side. When he throws his arms up, that's his telegraph. Start running. Then watch him. He will flash, that's also a telegraph. He will charge at you. Just walk a foot in any direction to avoid him. Then immediately start wailing on him. After about two rounds of this, he'll reduce the number of platforms and start shooting four blasts at you. This is only mildly more difficult, do the same exact things you've been doing. Final boss: Judgement: Open the fight by wailing on him. He will telegraph when he's about to charge. When you see the after-image, dash out of the way. Always be prepared to do it again. Do not attempt to strike him in phase-2. Just be on the opposite side and wait for him to telegraph the large blast. Then move out of the way and through the little blasts to avoid the beam/large blast. This is where you should be a little close, so you can wail on him while he's finishing up the beam. Then he will go to phase-3. Hit him a few times, but watch out for the purple lines, which telegraph his attacks. Keep wailing on him but avoid those. He will then go on to phase-4, which only happens after you've taken away about a third of his health. Destroy one or two of the drones that appear around you. The surviving ones will explode violently. Be far enough away from Judgement that his own blast won't hurt you, and then wail on him until he telegraphs phase-1. He's gonna do it two times now. Wash rinse and repeat until he's dead. All of those strategies work for a naked boss rush.
Those are some impressive skills, these old hands doesnt have the sharp reflexes to accomplish this amazing feat. I crown u awesome. Ill just beat the game the best way i know how
For me the toughest was the Archer.... But I don't think that was the toughest activity in the game... The 800 consecutive dash challenge in the upgrade shop.....😠
HPL Came out first and is way way way better. Better lore, more interesting game play, a character with an actual story, a real hub world to explore. It's not just a weird ass boss rush with a boring mechanic.
I like how it says no damage new game plus but I am like bruh if almost anything hit you once it was kinda over. New game plus is brutal with that 2 health thing
I don't know how to feel about the fact that only half of the bosses are named after tarot cards, I don't know if they're used anywhere else in game but with 23 (?) Different cards they shouldn't run out of cards to use
The black cape only appears in new game+ and cannot be unequipped. It does not double your damage. It has no effect unless you count your new game+ health.
It feels like you're deliberately making things harder for yourself Like with The Summoner, you could just destroy the flying minions right away but no, you kept them so you could have more projectiles to dodge
Apollo TheBasedGod the frog is considerd the easierst boss , you are the comple oppelsit of everyone els lol but srsly the frog patterns are easy to remember and to dog, just focos on the chrage blade attack like he does in the vid. you do it after the jars , wihle he spits the plants. after it juke his jumps, he repeats with the jars afterwards and thats it.
