Great video man. HLD is one of my favourite games too, even though I played it a few years ago. This vid however, just showed me that there was so much to the game that I never even noticed when I first played it, as I glossed over all the details and went straight through the game for the glorious combat. Cheers.

There are so many details I didn’t even mention in the video. They were really small things but they add up to make something great.

Sky: Children of the Light, a TGC game, is yet another good example of wordless storytelling, also following those same techniques used in HLD. Probably another reason people like me appreciate the world and environments in it.

for some reason, that reminded me of a discussion about cinema and television as a media - the former usually focus a lot more on visual storytelling, since the viewer feels more isolated from the exterior world because of some stuff like the dark room - and therefore more easily to immerse to a film's world; while the latter tends to be more wordy because anything is more successive for any kind of interruption, like for example when the phone rings or someone talks to your while you're watching Game of Thrones and in order to not to lose completely the action, the characters talk a lot more dunno if it made any kind of sense, but I couldn't not to express it

Dude I still can't even comprehend how crazy your improvement has been over the past 6 months. This video was really really good.

This channel has been my first real. venture into analytical writing and I think it took me awhile to find my analytical feet. Watching my older videos makes me cringe a little bit, but at least they show how far this channel has come. Hopefully they continue to get even better over the next 6 months!

I love this video, however as a language nerd I have to point out one issue with your presentation here. "Bear" is not called a "bear" just because we decided it should, language evolution is more complex than that, and it's not just a random collection of letters either. The first word that it has come from in the past may have been somewhat random, who knows. But what I mean is: Words have etymologies, histories. Bear, if you go far enough back in its etymology, comes from a Proto-Indo-European word that means "grey" and "brown."

Nice video. And while in my opinion HLD wasn't perfect in visual storytelling, for trying it out and executing it very well is incredible. After all, I cannot even recall any other game that tried to have its story 100% based on visuals, and wasn't some kind of indie prototype/demo merely toying with this concept, instead of being a full game that mixes this with its other mechanics and features. And another interesting thing, with visual storytelling, is that it is the best storytelling way for abstraction. Even dark souls uses enviromental storytelling for most of its story, instead of giving you everything on text like most games It is definitely hard to go all-in in visual storytelling, with no text at all, and HLD didn't manage to pull it off perfectly, but hopefully more games will follow HLD's storytelling!

I would say that the souls-like genre is... non-existent What every "souls-like" is... is essentially a 3D Metroidvania. Copy-pasting what you said: []Challenging Combat []Various items/powerups, by progression or exploration (secrets or not) []Story told by the world itself (See Super Metroid) and something you didn't mention is the backtracking and connectivity between areas. I have Salt&Sanctuary in mind, but it competes with so many Metroidvanias ;) Also, I would classify HLD as a Metroidvania instead of souls-like [Insert "The Dark Souls of" meme], but in the end of the day, this is an opinion, since genres are so subjective right now (souls-like genre existing has arguments for and against, with all of them being valid)

Yup, dark souls 1 has the best world design in any game by far, intriguing shortcuts and proper backtracking, all making sense in the game world. Even today, no game has come near to it, not even its sequels! As for metroid zero, I have no idea, but metroids generally have backtracking, which is kinda too much for some. Though, I think Super Metroid and AM2R don't suffer from this. I can remember only 1 boring/annoying backtracking in Super Metroid, that I simply bypassed it by sequence-breaking (still, though, opened walkthrough because I didn't feel like doing that backtracking) I also cannot really suggest you any metroidvania. After all, I am a random stranger, and we likely have very different tastes

Great video dude, I've yet to play this game yet, but I'm tempted to now purely based on how great that score was. Looking forward to see what you come up with next!

Why is it funny listening to serious philosophical monologue with a footage of a Zelda BOTW bear?
