What are the causes of hyperinsulinemia? Benjamin T. Bikman, Professor of Cell Biology and Physiology at Brigham Young University, explains what insulin resistance is and why it's relevant. Up to 46% of adults worldwide have metabolic syndrome, also called insulin resistance syndrome. It connects every non-communicable chronic disease, from the big ones like heart disease, diabetes and cancer to scary ones like migraines and dementia to less lethal but still very relevant ones, such as fertility problems. All are a derivative of one common problem: insulin resistance.
‪@bbikman1‬ explains insulin resistance as the failure of some cells to respond fully to insulin, leaving insulin levels high. There are three primary causes of insulin resistance: stress, inflammation and hyperinsulinemia. Stress is defined by elevated levels of the hormones cortisol and epinephrine, both of which want to increase your body's blood glucose, making them antagonistic to insulin. Sleep deprivation is the most common cause of stress. Inflammation is caused by cytokines, which occur with an infection, illness, autoimmune disorders, air pollution - including cigarette smoke - and enlarged fat cells. Hyperinsulinemia happens when there is too much insulin in the body and the body starts to become resistant to it. The body is conditioned to resist any constant stimulus.
Hyperinsulinemia is a cause and a consequence of insulin resistance, Bikman says. Watch the video to learn what insulin does and why hyperinsulinemia has become so common. Bikman's talk is followed by a Q&A.
Bikman earned his Ph.D. in Bioenergetics and was a postdoctoral fellow with the Duke-National University of Singapore in metabolic disorders. Currently, his professional focus is to better understand the role of elevated insulin and nutrient metabolism in regulating obesity, diabetes and dementia.

The two metaphors used for insulin resistance (IR) - "the cramming in of passengers into a vehicle until there is no more room for others" and "the forceful opening of a door to be able to enter" - helped me understand better what IR is. Thank you very much to the lady who asked the question on these metaphors and to Dr. Bikman for his enlightening answer. Also, I may have listened to Dr. Bikman's earlier videos on IR, but it's only now that I realize that high IR level does not necessarily mean high blood glucose. Yes, for me, I often have to listen to 2 or more videos on the same topic for better understanding.

I don’t give drs a pass but from my own family experience many would rather eat the jelly donut and reach for the insulin later than to give up jelly donuts. Some of us have this entitlement to eat poorly and expect the dr to give us an rx to get through the short term. The standard of care will continue to support those who insist on that standard through their own addictions and lack of personal accountability.

What about in addition to those unhealthy, sedentary lifestyle; muscle loss due to aging (sarcopenia) will surely cause a situation where less cells are receptive to insulin/glucose? What would the correlation to fatty liver/pancreas accumulated over many years and resultant in hyperinsulinemia in aging individuals? Thank you, I think Dr. Bikman has improved his game. I have always wondered about the causes of insulin insensitivity and felt that his explanations were insufficient. A lot of low carbers wish to demonize carbs and I think that Binman has moved to a better understanding of the process. This time he recognized lipotoxicity and talked about glycemic levels. He used the term "Overeating Carbohydrates" which is good. He touched on hyper processed foods and showed charts of high multiple short duration spikes. There is a lot of fear mongering about insulin spikes. The danger is prolonged spikes. Using the glycemic index one is able to moderated spikes while avoiding over processed foods.

@@eugeniebreida1583 My point is that Bikman is coming close to the Lipotoxicity hypothesis . At TM 15:50 Bikman begins to talk about Ceramides(a lipid). At TM 17:00 he presents strange statements about the blocking of insulin and the result of insulin. I am afraid I do not follow his train of thought. I did Atkins diet most of my life. Developed high Uric Acid (gout) and Hyperinsulinemia 316 pmol/L. What most don't know is that meat raises your insulin as much as some carbs. When I switched to a whole plant based diet (whole grains, legumes, fruit) with some fish and chicken, I no longer take Berberine and Allopurinol for my uric acid. My fasting insilin is down to 110 pmol/L. Look up Low Carb and Insulin Resistance. Bikman talks about OVEREATING carbohydrates how it affects fasting Insulin. OVEREATING of anything affects your insulin. OVEREATING meat raises your insulin.

The fix to poor sleep can be as simple as some good sodium like Realsalt, pink salt, or Celtic salt. I take some before bed as well as a few shakes here and there throughout the day. Salt prevents a cortisol dump in the middle of the night , which is what can wake one up. In other words, it’s simply physical stress, not necessarily mental or emotional stress. This is an important distinction, otherwise everyone will quit their jobs and any other challenges in life. It could simply be physical stress from lack of minerals/ salt (not table salt, it’s sodium chloride). See the “J” curve on salt intake with the more recent research , not old 1950s guidelines. Talk with your doctor if you are salt restricted.

@@KenJackson_US yes, meat and fat are lower in deuterium. With plants it differs largely, depending on plant and water source. @melissal3383
@melissal3383 6 месяцев назад
@@xspariki saw a French woman talking about that paradox. She said French women are extremely vain. They will basically fast if they gain weight. If they are insulin sensitive then this approach will work just fine. BUT if a person has high insulin levels or is insulin resistant then the human brain cannot access the energy from fat cells. And the drive to eat CANNOT be ignored. Ben Bikman says “Hunger ALWAYS wins”. He explains this in a different video. We have to become insulin sensitive FIRST in order for our bodies to utilize our fat stores. This makes it VERY obvious to understand why a heavy or obese person fails over & over on the recommendation to “eat less & move more”. Or even a carbohydrate addict. Ultimate failure protocol that we see happening everywhere.
