Ok, now I want a Retron 5!

***** They are good machines. I had issues with the first one I got, and the cart slots are notoriously unwilling to let go of the carts sometimes, but the machine is great. Using SNES pads to play Mega Drive games is brilliant too.

Mind blowing,as if you expanding the lifespan of old games with new content, i was thinking patching supermariobros with supermario unlimited with lunar ips patch, put it in your retron 5 and bamm now you can play that old game with new levels,graphics and items.

Great video! I discovered another use for the retron 5, I have a broken virtua racing genesis cartridge. I tried it on several genesis consoles and it just wont work so on a whim I tried it on the retron 5 and it works (makes sense since its dumping the rom) never the less another reason I like my retron 5! Question if it didn't work on the retron 5 what would you recommend to do with a broken cartridge? I'd hate to just throw it away thanks

Percio M [Try4ce] I've taken the board out of games that won't work no matter how hard I try... they've only been pretty valueless games. Just sort of a neat thing to display, I guess. Sad, though.

It would be perfectly possible to create such an translation adapter for a game console using a FPGA chip, But i am not that much in to retro games to actualy build it.
@BladeBlur
@BladeBlur 9 лет назад
As much as I hate to say this, I think I would rather get an everdrive and play translations that way, since I really don't want to invest in a retron and sought out imports as cool as they sound. Though it is interesting how NG3 is much easier in Japan, did not know that.
@mylifeingaming
@mylifeingaming 9 лет назад
***** [Try4ce] "Much easier," yes, but easy? No. The Japanese version of Ninja Gaiden III still took me more effort to beat than either of the first two games...

Well I think for me there is a fine line between really hard and unfair. This sounds more along the lines of Bloodborne where the game is brutally hard but doesn't purposely screw the player over.
@mylifeingaming

***** [Try4ce] Right. It took me hours to work through the final level, but once I learned it, I felt like I knew it. But I NEEDED those infinite continues to learn it (learning levels is a big part of my retro game enjoyment, and also why I like Souls/Bloodborne/etc.).

@mylifeingaming
@mylifeingaming 9 лет назад
+Otaku_GameFan [Try4ce] Yeah, everyone hates on the FFV PS1 port, but I've got a lot of respect for it... i mean, it was our first version here in the west. Treasure of the Rudras is the last (I think) internally developed game by Square for the Super Famicom. It's kind of surreal because it looks so much like FFVI, but isn't FFVI. There's some interesting-sounding mechanic where you build your own spells using words, which was apparently a major hurdle for translation. I haven't played it yet myself, but I definitely intend to buy it.
@yourepostedinthewrongneigh1545
What about games like Takeshi No Chosenju that need to be expanded?
@mylifeingaming
@mylifeingaming 9 лет назад
+wittyname100 [Try4ce] While this is not something I've dealt with personally, I believe this is what the UPS format is for. I know that Fire Emblem 6 on GBA needs to be expanded for the patch.
@r9delta104
@r9delta104 9 лет назад
+wittyname100 Take the non-expanded rom (that matches your original cartridge in every way) and the finished product that you're trying to patch to and create a patch between those instead and generally you'll have no problems on the Retron. I've ran into a few that needed expanded and generally as long as what i described is the last step you take you should be fine.

I think the option to apply firmware updates to the Retron 5 is easily the most underrated, and overlooked feature of the system.
@PowerKegGreg
@PowerKegGreg 8 лет назад
I was interested in purchasing the Retron5 a while back until I ready all about the stolen emulation software which I also read that the emulators used are not even top notch emulators to begin with. A friend I know has been telling me more about flashcarts (everdrives and whatnot). I personally am convinced to go that route instead. You can easily patch your games, it uses the original hardware which if you are a speed runner mean a true 1 to 1, and gives you that feeling of being "pure" I guess would be the correct term since you are using everything except the game. Legality is another topic obviously but both have their grey areas.

Wouldn't it be easier to just get an Ever Drive?
@mylifeingaming
@mylifeingaming 8 лет назад
+JerryTerrifying [Try4ce] Probably, but the point is that I wanted to use the real cartridges. We're going to be doing a video on Everdrives in the future.
@JerryTerrifying
@JerryTerrifying 8 лет назад
+My Life in Gaming But the real cart really isn't being used. So it's just sitting there while a rom loaded into the ram of an emulator is being played. The difference between a downloaded rom and one ripped yourself is minimal. May as well just set the Japanese cart in front of the system. Seems like an awful lot of mental gymnastics to justify the piracy. Same thing with repros. The games are still being pirated with the added bonus of wrecking legit games and paying for it. Every time I see a bootleg Mr Gimmick I mourn the loss of The Joker Returns. It would be less wasteful to just emulate or if legit hardware matters, and it does to me too, just use a flash cart. I guess it's neat the retron does that but I'd honestly rather play on the real hardware and I'm one of the CRT goons to boot. dunno to each his own.
@mylifeingaming
@mylifeingaming 8 лет назад
[Try4ce] It's true that it's not actually playing the cart, but it's still the best for me. I can't take a game seriously unless I actually own it. Original hardware is very important to me too, but if I had to make a concession, I would still choose the game cart first.
@Microwave414
@Microwave414 8 лет назад
+JerryTerrifying Easier? no its about the same. Also getting an everdrive for each system, then getting all the equipment to even play those games then having the systems modded to get a better picture quality and the price shoots sky high. Don't get me wrong everdrive's do serve a purpose, playing homebrews and games which have went up into ludicrous pricing on real hardware, but in my opinion, translating cheaper or completely regional Japanese super famicom games the retron 5 pretty much has this beat,
@JerryTerrifying
@JerryTerrifying 8 лет назад
+GregLH0 I think most people here would already have all the hardware. The picture quality situation is true but the retron using emulation still presents accuracy issues and input lag. My point is mostly if I'm going to emulate I can do that on my pc without buying an emulator machine. An everdrive isn't emulation and I can play it on my crt, with real hardware, with a real controller and no input lag. When I left that comment I just got done playing the fan translated version of Gargoyle's Quest II on the gameboy with an everdrive. I was able to play it at my job on the real hardware.

@EbenezerScroogeMcDuck
@EbenezerScroogeMcDuck 4 года назад
Shouldn't make a difference if the ROM is dumped into the retron vs playing it on an actual SNES. Think of it like this... dump at once vs dumping continuously in small chunks. The thing about emulation was that back in the ZSNES days, accuracy was nonexistent. The wind blowing sounded like ghosts moaning. Today, there's almost no inaccuracies aside a cartridge simply not booting at all, but all the sfx and images and functions appear to be 99.9% spot on. I don't say 100% because I haven't played every SNES game, so one out there might have a miscolored pixel lol.

@ShogunGin0
@ShogunGin0 9 лет назад
Personally, as far I'm concerned, I think I'd end up using everdrives/flash carts. Each are costly, of course, but that's because you're paying for the ability to play ever single game in a console's library off a single cartridge on original hardware. And since you're supposed to put the roms on there, it can play patched games. The other step for me would be to get repros. There are some repros out there that I would really, really like to have, but failing that, I'd rather save up for a flash cart instead.

@hamsandwich9162

Also most everdrives don't properly translate the voltage used within the cartridge to match with the voltage used in the console. Which could lead to damage in the long term.

I have street fighter zero 2 on SNES. It's garbage and unplayable as it is too slow. A technical marvel, YES. But you wouldn't loose too much by not having the ability of playing this game. I'm better off playing it on my arcade machine, or better yet...playing the superior SSF2. What you would loose however, is the ability to play the excellent Star Ocean which uses the same chip. Now starfox's speed depends on your machine. Fat snes run this games allegedly faster than the snes jr. model (can test this myself as I own both a snes jr and super famicom)...But dunno about the retron5. STILL, unless you really love this game (even as much as I do), I wouldn't recommend it. It is more of a novelty or tech demo. The game suffers heavy stuttering and low frame rate..it runs just too slow to be enjoyed by the new generations. I love it and enjoy it mostly because of nostalgia...

You can do this legally without a RetroN 5, just use a Flash Cart. I had a whole paragraph about the laws surrounding Flash Carts, dumps, and patches, but I accidentally hit delete when I wanted to hit edit and I got really irritated. Bottom line, there are better ways of doing this, the Flash Cart is the equivalent of using a real cartridge instead of an emulated one, they work in a real console, and the RetroN 5 illegally uses emulators released under non commercial licenses. So your comment about "the only system that lets you play an authentic, legally obtained physical copy of a cartridge based game" is nonsense. You can just play them on any console with the patches on an Everdrive 64 or whatever type of flash cart you use. It is more accurate, still legal, and less scummy because you don't use a RetroN 5. You saying the RetroN 5 feels like the most "up and up" way of doing things is a joke. It is the exact opposite of "up and up" again, it stole code. The only reason it still exists is that the people behind the emulators don't have the time or means of suing because the emulators are made in free time.

I've heard that there's an adapter for the Super Nintendo that lets you play translation patches on the original hardware. It's called the Super UFO Pro 8. Have you tried that out?
@evknucklehead
@evknucklehead 8 лет назад
From what I've read, the Super UFO Pro 8 does basically the same thing the Retron 5 does, except storing the dumped ROM onto an SD card before applying the patch and passing it to the console instead of emulating the console. However, the Super UFO Pro 8 doesn't link up special chips that may be in the cartridge properly, except maybe the DSP-1, so if the game in question uses one of the special chips, you might not be able to play the game properly. The Retron 5 emulates these special chips itself, so it will work with (most of) these games anyway.

@evknucklehead I know I'm late, but mine doesn't load games over a certain size. For example most any RPGs. So defeats the purpose.

Another reason to use fan translations is because sometimes the English localization was so badly censored that the story no longer represents what the developers originally intended. Cybernator is a good example of this. The Japanese version, Assault Suits Valken, had much more dialog during the levels, and the story was much more detailed. Also, there's a patch for Contra Hard Corps that lets you "play by Japanese rules" like the Ninja Gaiden III patch you mentioned.

@CSIG1001
@CSIG1001 8 лет назад
The everdrive is hardware being used on original hardware. There is no point to own a retron 5 when a modded SNES RGB on the framemeister will work just as good. Everything can be patched on the PC.. Thats like me saying I am going to buy a model 1 genesis to play master system games on the master converter attached to the genesis when i can just use the mega drive to play Master system games through the genesis since the orignal Master system hardware is already incorporated inside the genesis. The only reason to play on the Master System is mod or add the Japanese Sega Master System i Yamaha YM2413 FM synthesis chip . Which would make the gaming experience alot better for sound vs any North American version of the Master system. Even then retron cant do that. Either way my point is this patching can all be done using everdrives and i do not see the point owning a retron V unless you have a massive game library, besides the retron is not original hardware.
@kevintheshane
@kevintheshane 8 лет назад
Everdrive is original hardware with fake game. Retron is a real cartridge with a clone system. I'm just saying that he says specifically in the video that he prefers the latter over the former. "There is no point to own a retron 5 when a modded SNES RGB on the framemeister will work just as good." Except that the above solution is gonna run you several hundred dollars just to get one system up and running. I have a Retron and it works great for what I need. It was cheap (at just $129) and it makes my games look fantastic on my modern TV. Plus it lets me use original controllers which is crucial for me. I get that there are other options, including just emulating the entire library of all those systems and getting converters to plug controllers into my PC, but I've tried emulation before and I usually mess around for 20 minutes and then get bored. For me, the Retron gets close enough to the actual experience that I find myself engaged enough to play through and finish my old games rather than just messing around with them for a bit. I totally will concede that RGB modding all your systems and doing the framemeister stuff is probably the way to go for a super enthusiast. But for someone who just plays retro games for fun and want them to look nice, the Retron is a great alternative. Gets you like, 90% of the quality/authenticity for a fraction of the time, money, and effort.
@Sebastian-xy3xk
@Sebastian-xy3xk 7 лет назад
But the Retron 5 is illegal because of it's copied Copyrighted Emulators. And using a Flash Cart isn't "fake" because it takes the whole patched ROM and puts it into it's memory, then the Flash Cart has to "emulate" how actual ROM Cartridges work in order to send it to the console. In the end, it doesn't matter if the actual ROM Data is on an SD Card or in and actual Cartridge. Even though people say dumped games are "Digital" Copys, the same thing can be said about a Cartridge. Both are just ROMs and just a piece of code. The only difference is with a game dump you can have more control on what you do with that piece of code and where to store it.

I just got a reproduction cart of Mother 3, now all I need is a Game Boy Player :)
@SageOwl
@SageOwl 8 лет назад
+UnboxedTV I bought a Repro of Mother 3 as well and you will have to use the Gameboy Player for it or an actual GBA because the game demands that you have zero lag to do the timed hits. Repros also wont work on something like the Super Retro Advance because it causes it to randomly freeze. I also tried my repro on the RetroN 5 and it wouldn't recognize the rom that it dumped (granted this was around when the R5 first came out). I lost a LOT of saved games and a lot of progress just trying to get that damn thing to work (I eventually just used a flash cart on a GBA SP AGS-101). So yeah, I'd recommend the Gameboy Player and a CRT if have/can find one because I doubt you have GC component cables and HDTV input lag is a bitch.
@UnboxedtvNet

Dr. Steve Brule Actually living in Australia means PAL Gamecubes have RGB output and a clever homebrewer has made an app called the Game Boy Interface, which outputs Game Boy Player footage in native 240p (The Official Game Boy Player app only outputs at 480) Combined with the Framemeister it works great

Technically you can also play translations on the real hardware using the EverDrives that Krikzz makes for various consoles. The only caveat is the translations must be compatible with real hardware, so translations that were developed for specific emulators like ZSNES for example, might not work properly on the real console. In this regard, the Retron 5's ability to be patched to work with certain emulator-based hacks makes it a fine alternative.

I love when people act like emulating or editing a 35 year old ROM file is like robbing a bank. To be fair, only in in the last year via the NES Micro-console has Nintendo expected a profit from anything NES since the mid-90s. My view is that if you literally could not buy it in a store for the last decade it's fair game. Maybe Nintendo doesn't agree but I'd rather keep my products in the public eye than force the public to spend insane amounts of 3rd hand cash to buy used versions of it. My issue comes if/when Nintendo starts making more NES-mini consoles. Sure, they're just emulation boxes but they are Nintendo's. At that point you technically *can* buy them and should. However, that obscure game released in 1988 that only hardcore JRPG fans even know about is fair game (lol). I picture these dudes playing a modded ROM and going to bed terrified the FBI is going to repel through the windows lmao

***** [Try4ce] I've had trouble with this feature, though I haven't tried importing saves for very many carts... mostly I've been using the RetroN 5 for games that I haven't yet started. I've also been suspicious that it could destroy the saves that are already on the cart, but maybe it's just coincidence that they disappeared.

***** I've backup all of my save data and randomly tested some that I didn't mind loosing the save if something went wrong, works perfectly. I also transferred my saves to my computer since flash memory is not that reliable.

+gaming historian. I would buy the black version. The gray ones seem to have issues with the NES slot. I had to return mine and got a black one which works perfectly. As for the ips patching, I figured it out on my own. I like to play the super famicom games in English. I also own a secret of mana cart that's sealed and seiken densetsu 2. Since I own both games and I'm not breaking a seal, I patched seiken densetsu 2 to play secret of mana. I consider this a viable option for those of us who own both copies of games.

I don't see what the big deal is. They're making it sound like this justifies downloading roms. There's no difference between this and downloading a rom "because you bought a cartridge of it". If you gotta have a physical copy, then just write a patched rom to a cartridge. At least then you have the option of playing on real hardware.

Trying to play a Japanese Chrono Trigger and used the header.ips file from romhacking.net. I only see the credits and the translator's logo then fades to black. Wonder if it's because I'm not selecting a patch made for the Japanese release? I've tried Lunar IPS and still no dice.

I would consider that, turning the official translation into a translation patch for the Japanese version is also kinda pirating, since, well, the one who make the patch obviously don't have the permission to redistribute the translation. Thus, I'd just say, don't be a dick, and you are fine, as most of these stuffs are kinda in grey zone.

I own the retron 5 Beach edition and I own the consoles and hundreds of games. With that said I also own a Pi 4 running retro pie and it is loaded with every game from 70s to the 00s. I will always play a real game over a pirated rom unless said game is ridiculously expensive like most of the Saturn games. At the end of the day if it gets people playing these old games then im for it and nobody should care what or how you play these old games. If nintendo wants to remake these cartridges and sell them again then I would buy and not download them. On the other hand these should always be free from the source as they didn't make the game and legaly shouldn't charge for them. We need to preserve these games as long as possible.

I was actually hyped for the RetroN 5 because, like almost everyone else out there, I expected it to be a full hardware clone supporting the 9 or so systems it advertised. Then of course I learned that it was an emulation box running Android. I was disappointed, but then in the back of my mind I realized that it would eventually get some kind of CFW running on it so I could just load ROMs onto it and have a dedicated emulation box. I rarely use it though nowadays. I have flash carts for almost every system I own so it is pointless to play it on hardware imperfect emulation. Plus I don't want to have to go and make my own .ips files for every single game I would want to play across all the systems (if anyone has a link to a pack for these then please share). Also that controller was pure shit. I actually couldn't get it to go in a proper southeast diagonal because the little wanna be NeoGeo Pocket Color control stick was cut too fat and didn't fit properly. Swapping it with a Xbox 360 stick worked though and makes it a bit better.

You can play the original software on non-authentic hardware this way, but I'd rather use a patched ROM on a flash cart to use authentic hardware. It will be closer to the real experience, despite that your way uses a real cart, funny enough

For me specifically, I'm okay with most 'clone' consoles. For me though I *have* to have the option to play using original controls, and for me the hardware is irrelevant to a point. This translation patch thing is going to be a huge thing that pushes me off the fence with regard to the Retron5. So thanks!
@waterheart95

The best way to play translated games is on crt vga monitor and emulation software like retroarch , which is free or using everdrives with the patch roms if you prefer the original console. Also use usb adapters for the original controllers or good usb controller.

I've heard that the Retron 5 has compatibility issues, that certain games keep crashing. I'm not sure if this is a universal problem or isolated to certain devices, but it's those issues that are stopping me from buying a Retron 5.

@mylifeingaming

+Jarrah White [Try4ce] I'm not sure exactly what my firmware is, but it was up to date at the time we did this video. Also keep in mind that I don't use it a ton, I mostly play on my original consoles, so other people have probably tried a much wider variety of games on the RetroN 5 than I have. Though I have some friends that use theirs all the time, for all kinds of games, and they basically never have issues (aside from the pins in the NES slot breaking after a while... they were able to get it replaced on warranty). It is true that Retroarch is the basis for the emulator tech inside the RetroN 5, and while I'm not super clear on all of the specifics, Retroarch is not supposed to be used for any commercial purposes. It's pretty crummy of Hyperkin to have done that, I won't deny that. However, for the end user, I still think it's pretty cool to use real carts on an emulator system (even if it's just using a temporary ROM dump and not really "playing" the cartridge). I would love for there to be another alternative for using translation patches in the way we describe in the video. There's another system called Retro Freak in Japan, and I'm not too sure what kind of emulators it uses. However, it stores ROMs rather than requiring the cartridge to remain in the system, so I'm not too sure how I feel about it. I'd like to try one, though.

If you want to patch and play on OG hardware then get an Everdrive from krikzz. You can put a patched rom on the everdrive and there you go! Since the Retron 5 is just an emulator I rather support the everdrive scene again both are options but if you want to go the og hardware route then an everdrive is for you!
