Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis | Hot Tub Lung, Farmer’s Lung, Bird Fancier’s Lung, Bagassosis
In this lesson, we discuss the condition known as hypersensitivity pneumonitis, including different types such as Hot Tub Lung, Farmer’s Lung, Bird Fancier’s Lung, Bagassosis, etc. The causes/triggers, exposures and pathophysiology of hypersensitivity pneumonitis will be discussed. The different stages of illness (acute, subacute, and chronic), including signs and symptoms of each stage will be discussed as well. We finally discuss methods of diagnosing and treating hypersensitivity pneumonitis.

I was diagnoses with Bird Fancier's Lung in 2017 when I was 19 years old. I have two cockatiels. I was coughing for 8+ weeks and even bruised all my left ribs and broke one because of the intense coughing. I was hospitalized for a week. This stuff is no joke.

I have Bird Fancier Lung and was diagnosed in 2004. AQI makes the difference in the world. I have a little mini air monitor I keep on my nightstand and then in my purse when I go places it helps me know what is going on around me when I notice a harder time breathing.

My mum was diagnosed with HP. We rehomed the bird one year ago but her condition hasn't improved. Any tips on what we can do to help her improve her condition?

My dad kept pigeons all my life. I caught Covid in December and after I slept all the time, couldn’t breathe and had a tightening around the top of my stomach. My tongue would swell and body would bloat. My eyes were dry every morning. I was struggling to move from left to right at night in bed. Last night I removed my bedding - feathered bedding! First time in a long time I slept really well, no pain and normal breathing! Eyes fine. Long may this last!!!

It's possible to be allergic to feather bedding with or without previous exposure to birds, but apart from the difficulty breathing, those are not symptoms of hypersensitive pneumonitis?

There are errors here. Pigeon antigens are no more likely to result in HP than any other bird. The misunderstanding is spread because, unlike parrots, pigeon keepers tend to keep larger numbers of birds consistently over many years having no other birds and are thus easy to identify. Bird or Pigeon fanciers' lung was also discovered as a separate condition when pigeon keeping was extremely fashionable at the beginning of the century, however even at the beginning they knew it was birds in general..not mentioned here but HP can be caused by any animal since they all shed proteins...in fact it can be caused by exposure to any living or non-living particle that the body decides is an allergen...or there may be no known trigger and you could be genetically predisposed (idiopathic HP).

Another error is that it is not only bird droppings..avian precipitins are found in feathers, feather dander hence feather duvets can cause the same problems without someone ever keeping birds

That should be rather type I HS. What symptoms? Googling didn't yield any results for HS pneumonitis in response to dog fur

Im curious about the dog fur too? Currently I have been in hospital for a month on oxygen. I am on the respiratory ward and been told its HP. I have never suffered with allergies. I am a long term dialysis patient. The Dr reckon it's possible a reaction a drug called Dapsone.. I am not convinced. I am worried as I have a toy poodle pup who I've had for 7 months..

This depends on the pathology, for the HS pneumonitis it is: acute: after 4 - 8h subacte: weeks chronic: many weeks/months/years
