How backward Europe was due to stupid Christianity . Shame on Europe's history. Now compare with other parts of the world at that time who had better system and economy at that time Like India China etc
My husband had an ancestor who was hung as a witch. It was really about land. Someone wanted her property. How many others were hung for the same reason?
Probably a lot, and men would have been targeted that way too. A whole lot were probably killed for being that annoying old Lady down the street, or being incurable gossips. Hmm...
Many believe the Salem Witch Trials were really about land and jealousies...I mean it makes sense the main targets were the people that had land or were in disagreements with others or the vulnerable (old poor ladies, beggars) basically people that didn't have someone to truly defend them :(
Right, but the Salem trials only killed about a dozen people and ended up discrediting the Puritans. In Europe, it was thousands upon thousands over the years. It must have been almost as bad as living under Communism or Fascism, you could never know when your neighbor would denounce you. What a horrible way to live...
Sushi Time...tis true the Salem Witch Trials are the ones I have most knowledge of as I'm American...granted I know about the witch hunts of Europe being due in part to the Malleus Malificarum because I minored in history and took a ton of history based in the dark and middle ages
It sucked not knowing who could potentially accuse you and knowing that if enough people believed then you were gone :( I hate that so many innocent lives were lost due to fear and superstition
Except that's not a human "truth" at all, just a lazy excuse. Our natural curiosity drives us to learn what we don't understand, that's why we study the cosmos, why we know of subatomic particles. It's the desire to understand the world that drove the great explorers. One of many human truths is that we can be narcissistic, gullible, arrogant and vile.
@Ganieda Morgan, It doesn't need to be that way. Humility (lack of arrogant pride), understanding and acceptance of human ignorance, courage and humanity pushes us to be fair and ASK, try to understand, discuss, ask more, try to understand further.
I want to add that in Scandinavia prior to Christianity, "witches" were respected wise women, sought out for their medicine. They understood back then that "the power to heal" was a form of knowledge of herbs and mixtures, and good rather than evil.
"You're a witch if you have a mark" "What mark? How does it look like?" "Literally anything" That is so messed up. They bother searching for a sign that proves their belief for self justification for their horrendous acts when this "sign" could literally be anything because their truth is the only truth they want to accept.
In the 90s there was a 14 year old boy named Michael Crowe who's sister was murdered. The cops psychologically tortured him until he not only made a fake confession, he actually came to believe he had done it. It turned out to be a homeless guy who had crawled into her room through the window. With the right techniques and a complete lack of morals, you can force someone to conjure fake memories.
Then read, listen to or watch more history. Any source of power: Corporate, religious, land ownership, political opposition and simpler things can result in similar persecution.
"I am no more a witch than you are a wizard and if you take my life, God will give you blood to drink." - The last words of an executed "witch" to the executioner days before he died, drowning in his blood from a ruptured artery.
Aspen Wicce So she could tell by looking at him that be had a sickness that would end up drowning him in his own blood and it turned out to be a ruptured artery? That's a stretch.
She was most likely coached by one of the magistrates. All it would take is a mixture of threats and vague statements, coupled by the girl's own lack of true understanding on the subject, and Bam. Next thing you know she watches her own mother/family being dragged off, cursing her while she can only stand there, confused as to what just happened.
Besides, like her sister who is a teenager, they must have had wizardy experiences. Their family consists of healers and curers. She must have heard weird stories from older people, fantasised about them and believed they were all true. Such were the circumstances. So was her sister who confessed on her own that he was a witch! Superstition is so dangerous!!
There is another documentary here on RU-vid about her Janet Davis. Saying how she was so young the illegitimate child and knew she was kinda the runt. So there may have been some resentment. Also it was possible that what she over heard and mistook for spells were a combo of Catholic practices and prayers. Since England was protestain, this was a huge risk so they did their masses in secret. It's a great theory and seems to make sense. She took what she knew, what she thought she understood and the coaching of the adults around her.
If those people really were witches, why didn't they heal themselves or do this so called witchcraft to defend themselves, did people ever think about this? (i just wanted to say that when i wrote this comment i wasn’t as educated about this topic as i am now, so please be kind)
they did consider it. That's why if you died during the interrogation you were considered to have proven your innocence. Never underestimate the ability to a mob to circle logic their way into killing everyone lol.
That poor girl, and all the other woman from then, may they rest in peace, they were the only thing that would help the people, from illness, they know the herbs that help, not witch craft only the first sciences, rest in peace,x
@It is What It is - that's funny you say that because I've had three different psychics tell me that I was put to death by the early church and accused of witch craft for being a healer and trying to help people during The Plaque. Church officials didn't approve of my methods. I'm a very spiritual person (not religious because for SOME reason, religion turns me off - haha).
Alexa KL64 -Same here except mine took place during Egyptian times. I was killed for speaking my beliefs that differed from the establishment. Crazy huh?!
Omg, me too! I had a reading done because I was experiencing synchronicities and she told me I was burned alive because I was a witch. She said I am definitely a healer and to study numerology. Watching this, I feel like I'm being choked.
I was staying at a Hindu/Buddhist spiritual person who asked me directly if I was a witch/spiritual person because he noticed the energy within me (and the runes I drew to guide me on my trip). I said yes, and we toasted on that, he was happy to see me. He showed me how to do some basic massages and after I tried to give one myself he told me I have talent and should definitely train this to heal people. 😊
that's what I think too. She didn't confess because she was guilty, she was more likely than not afraid of what they'd do to her next if she kept resisting
That's was a result of the Church. In pre-Christian Europe and America women could, and did, acquire wealth, property, and influence. Condemning healing women was the Churches way of supplanting the older religions.
I hope you realize men also were accused and executed as witches. Often the accusers were women as well. So your statement is a bit counter to the facts, just saying...
@@berlinwall6674 I certainly would if it were true....But No That said there were periods when more females were accused and others when it was the opposite.
Rubbish. Most of the accusers was children and women, not men. This is what happens when you give women and children influence and men don't stand up to them.
The prosecutors, judges, and business people were sanely interested in seizing the accused's property. They were not mentally ill at all, unless we pathologize greed and graft.
@David Ringlein demons only exist in the minds of people...put there by the elite controlers. Have no fear of them they are not real.....best wishes...😍😍🤩🤩😁
The torture scenes were heartbreaking and unbearable to watch. I can't imagine what people had to endure because of the fear of the majority; all because of a book. I feel very sad for what these people had to live through or die for. Even if they had different beliefs, the idea that you think someone's religion will harm you is insane! It is like killing someone for the thoughts in his mind!
Well, countless people died because of one book - because they were considered heathens, or not human, or regarded as enemies because they believed in a different religion. If people weren't so gullable the world would be a better place.
Fun fact, it was later found that the first guy never even really believed his servant girl was a witch. He knew damn well she was having an affair and he couldn't stand it since she had refused his attempts at seducing her. However admitting to said affair would've ruined her life just as much as coming out as a witch would. Except if she came out as a witch she would be the only one suffering, her lover would remain anonymous and free.
The maid supposedly confessed after they found a mole, but the account was written by the man who accused her, tortured her and lusted after her. Do we really want to believe that she did confess? Another case of men trying to get what they want by silencing women.
@@rubycook6638get back to your cave incel, you are so behind that the world doesn't even need you. You will slowly become irrelevant, inexistent, no one will miss you, you will be alone and sad. More than you already are.
Dude!!! I was just thinking the same thing about Seaton that he didn't think she was a witch at all he wanted her sexually and since he couldn't have her sexually he decided that he was going to have complete control over her another way. Sicko
Quinten Whyte Yes. And do take note that it was AFTER the Reformation had occurred. England& Scotland were well established Protestant countries. Ironic. No?
i Draw, I dont know you but there is no need to insult me for misunderstanding. We all make numerous mistakes. A lot of mistakes will be made in any given times and there is no disgrace in that. After all, we are all human beings. Thanks for the correction and my apologies for mistake I've made a week ago. I hope you forgive me. A wise human being once said "Hate and violence will never lead to peace and freedom for humanity"!
klskin “Exactly, so, if she weighs the same as a duck-she’s made of wood... And therefore... A WITCH. Very good, we shall use the larger scales... “ Love it! 💛🤣🎞
The Bible is described as "the Good Book" and a guide to moral living, etc., and yet the more strictly and literally people follow it the more corrupt they become. Strange, isn't it?
the old testament was full of harshness and violence , but in the new testament Jesus tells us that the only commandment is to love ................ the Koran tells muslims to kill all infidels, IE every not muslim
No, FALSE religion kills today, you atheist. True Christians, who actually follow the law of the Christ, do not do harm to others. It is written, "Love does not work evil to its neighbour," and "Love does not rejoice over unrighteousness (evil), but rejoices with the truth." You go ahead and read through the sermon on the mount and tell me where it gives place for these atrocities, because that very sermon outlined how Christians are to act; not like these hateful apostate weeds.
Sorry but true Christianity does not have anything to do with politics. Jesus instructed his followers to be "no part of the world," which very much includes not having anything to do with the political element of society, OR having anything to do with their wars. True Christians are "ambassadors of Christ." You tell me what ambassador supports a government other than the one it represents or takes up arms under its banner. Isn't that called treason? In fact, no Christian had anything to do with politics or war until after the death of the apostles and the after council of Nicaea. Before that, they were willing to face vicious ridicule and die horrible deaths than hold public office or take up the sword. They could be let go from the arena if they would simply place a pinch of incense on the alter to Caesar in support of him, but the majority refused to even do THAT simple gesture. Instead, they courageously faced being torn apart, alive, by lions in front of a cheering crowd of political supporters of Rome. Modern day followers of Christ are no different. Thousands have died because of their convictions, tens of thousands have faced prison sentences and hundreds of thousands have faced mistreatment by both those who support their government, and the government themselves. Yes, that even includes persecution from the Catholic church, Protestant church, the various orthodox churches, non-denominational churches and even members of various tribal religions, Hindus and Buddhists. Your generalization of it being a system of lies does not build or add any credibility your case either, but amounts to nothing but hateful anti-religious rhetoric. You really can't say anything else though, because you don't know anything about religion, other than what you see and read. So essentially you're slandering what you don't even understand, which is the greatest of foolishness.
its truly incredible how things ended up this way. witches, originally, were pagan magic users (they still exist; im one of them) before christianity. its amazing that, the religion original to england, which had prospered for thousands of years, was now so badly stamped out by christianity that the definition of "witch" changed to fit their agenda. obviously, im not saying christianity is a bad religion, but its amazing what differences in religion can do.
What do you mean by magic? Magic as in what magicians do or something else? I hear a lot of men and women say they are modern day witches that are misunderstood but they never take the next step in explaining what they do and if it is real or just like roll playing and doing rituals.
Christianity only became after Christ died...before that there was the true religion by the creator and false worship of lesser ones...that evolved into pagan worship
I can't even continue to watch, it's making me that angry (great, realistic acting is part of the reason!). I wish I could say that no one is like this today, but various places in the world, various races, are still like this. Humans disgust me, but giving the way certain, more intelligent, animals in the animal kingdom behave, I can't say cruelty is just a human thing.
yep, that's exactly what this video is. ENTERTAINMENT. this could have been a good documentary but it has WAAAAAYYYYYY too much over-dramatization, which make it entertainment, not a documentary.
@@halosandhorns8330 I mean technically didn’t they believe that they *were* outsiders? Outsiders of their religion? I think I may have just summarized the entirety of world history lol
Samiya ferguson don’t comb your hair after you shower. perhaps run your fingers through it, but use conditioner. put a light mouse in it while wet and curl your hair with your fingers. when dried, you’ll have moderately tight curls
AmazinglyPotato some hair just can’t curl. But to build on what they said, brush your hair before you shower, and during the shampoo and conditioning process run it down your hair and not scrunching your hair and knotting it up.
Thank you sister for the way you very kindly and passionately told this painful and tyrannical story. For these brave women, girls and the boys as well, may they have Peace eternally.
Well if time travelling becomes a thing. I wouldn't mind going back in time with a good M16 and some decent armor and kill the idiots they claim to be "christains" or "holy".
Sutton Hoo Actually witches and magic do exist. But be that may most of it was caused by women who were jealous of other women and accused them of witch craft.
Or maybe they where exacly like today. Using storys to control thought and behavior.. divide communities..supress knowledge contrary to the status quo.. murder and steal what ever they wanted..like land. So..not supersticius fools at all, just psychopath leaders..Just as today..we still in a dark age of conciusness..
Well, there must have been some truth to what they believed. And here we are, October 2019.THOUSANDS OF WITCHES ATTEMPTING TO PLACE A CURSE...This has been going on every month since Pres. Trump has been elected, but is especially emphasized with the approach of "Halloween," which is the "Highest spirit activity among satanists and witches during the year." Over 300,000 are a part of Wicca that are joining in placing a "binding" on Trump and on those who support him. And how do I know? Well it's on their Facebook, Instagram pages. Even here on RU-vid. Witches have always been the devil's handmaiden, back then and now.
Here, despite everything, she tries to defend the King as much as possible. History is written by victors and kings. Obviously, he made sure people thought of him as prudent king who had no choice but to believe in witchcraft. He is just a loser. Even educated, rich people can be superstitious. He sure was one from the start.
They're all beautiful, beautiful people with even more beautiful souls who got broken by these acts. A wise man never admits to his wisdom, and a fool will never tell of his foolishness either.
How could you tell? You don't know what crimes they committed. You can't go back to the past and just point out people who you think aren't complete aholes.
@@Nartatoalevy ooh you have the same name as me😂😂 anyways have you 2 witches experienced getting chased by the government? Y'all better watch out for that because you guys might get experimented on-
What was their concept of mental health back then? Could people that we today would consider schizophrenic or epileptic have been considered witches back then and executed? Could people that we today consider to be psychotic have been accusing other people as being witches because the psychotic people were having visual hallucinations and delusions and auditory hallucinations?
I find it appalling and very concerning how powerful confession-oriented prosecution both was and is in driving "hysterical justice." It still happens today in various ways, and we'd all be better if we learned to recognize it.
Heinrich Kramer wrote the book, yes. He was originally doing the search at the request of a king. He even tried to go to a nearby town to try to start questioning people and it didn’t go to well. The leaders in the town basically kicked him out for pestering their people. It was some time afterward where he wrote that book to make a case, and it worked. They killed innocent victims in the name of their gods.
Living in those days must have been horrible. To start, its astounding that servants were basically slaves. That man who tortured his servant girl because she was skilled and used to go out at night was able to do so with complete impunity. Can't imagine being a peasant and understanding that there is no recourse. If an employer tried to do that to you now, he would be punished for kidnapping and inflicting bodily harm.
It's unfortunate that more supposedly educated Kings weren't more open to not putting up with just anyone "wasting the king's time" with hearsay accusations.
As fascinating as these are, they are profoundly difficult to watch without causing incredible rage. Towards the church (let's be frank here, the church has ALWAYS persecuted people in some form or other, if it isn't witches it's homosexuals and so on and so forth) and the people in power who could've put a stop to these atrocities but never did. And it causes rage towards their modern inheritors who continue to torment people in often subtle, invisible ways.
Its human nature no matter what is done in the name of any religion or cause. People are evil more often then not especially when it comes from fear of what is perceived to be different. Mankinds ability to do good is overshadowed by its conviction to do evil in the name of goodness.
I felt that rage too that it makes me want to kill the people who wrongly accused people, especially that man who r@p3d the girl after torturing her. I want to hit his head with a rock.
I have learned in my life that anything man cannot understand or control, he seeks to destroy at all costs. I think as a Woman in this day and age it is very important as Women to never forget as well how a rejected fool is much more dangerous than any "witchcraft". May the spirits of those tortured and harmed by this disease called hatred be Free💜
Sometimes I wish that I could bring people from the past into the present. I would bring all those who had been accused of witchcraft just before death and teleport them to the present to be healed up, and live out their days doing whatever they want. They could learn how to read, or they could tell us about what it was like to live where and when they lived.
Modern witch here to learn what happened to my people throughout history and my heart is breaking. innocent people some may have been witches but none deserved this. See how most were in the business of healing and helping people and this is what they got.
Why is this host not wearing suitable gloves when handling the historical books? The oil and debris on her fingers will damage the pages. A valuable history lesson others may also be interested in hundreds of years hence. Lets protect their resources.
It is not always necessary to wear gloves when handling books. It all depends on the state of the paper, ink and cover. The head of the collection probably knows best and by the looks of it they thought it only necessary to lay the book on a pillow to take the stress away from the book’s cover
Actually they have found that wear gloves is actually more harmful to the books or papers and it’s best to have clean dry hands to handle such rare finds.. library.pdx.edu/news/the-proper-handling-of-rare-books-manuscripts/
Uhm chick hysteria started the Salem version of this. They acted fools in court with attention seeking hysterics and accused others. So yea....and I'm a woman before you accuse me of mansplaining
And yet we as a society havent changed very much at all. If we were capable of convicting and excuting based on flimsy evidence and for stupid reasons i think we would.
This hurts my heart so much to watch being a Wicca when being a "witch" is based of a Pagen or Neo-Pagen faith before Christianity fully came to be and this faith still exists but I feel so bad for these women who most likely believed in this faith and were killed for it.
Jennet Device (at the age of 9) was a witness at a trial for her grandmother, mother, sister, brother and roughly 8 other people. I believe the episode you are referring to is called the Pendle Witch child.
19:50 damn, she suffered alot at the end of her young life. Tortured several times, prison sentence, and then burned alive...I cannot think of a worse end to a life.
Poor child. She was probably threatened to say that *to her own mother* and then her mother say those things to her? I feel so sorry for that poor child.
