60% glass filled nylon, very durable, but they do get brittle with time, and the hose connections are the thing that breaks off. I have fixed some on my cars using some copper pipe and Quickset steel epoxy, after degreasing the area, and some filing and sanding to make a tight fit, and a rough surface for the epoxy to grip, along with a small bead inside. Keeps you going till you can get a new one, which in some cases was months later, as there was no stock around. Yes the thin sealer film is needed, to both hold it, and to fill the tiny gaps that the oil can seep through with time. Those gaskets get hard with time, they should be considered a change part every 5 years, if you want to not have leaks. The stick it in place is very important with those gaskets that are multi part, like some sump gaskets and valve cover gaskets are for some vehicles, as the sealer is needed in the joins to make it oil tight.
