Here are the top 10 features you’ll love about i30 N:
1. Insane (track-spec) tyre and brake endurance
2. E-diff ( cuts wheelspin, boosts traction and cornering speed.)
3. Track-friendly warranty. Unlike most other brands, Hyundai extends the warranty on the i30 N to cover you for track days. As long as it’s not actual motorsport (like, a race) you’re covered.
4. Engine performance: 202kW/353Nm (378 on overboost).
5. Fastback styling: it’s not very often a carmaker tacks on a totally different design to the back half of an existing car and makes it dead sexy.
6. Bi-modal exhaust - just sounds awesome.
7. Nurburgring R&D: Rear strut brace. Actually there’s bespoke reinforcement all over this car - I whipped it up on a hoist and detailed that in my original i30 N Hatch review. It all just says: we went the extra mile, or in the case of this car: the extra 500 laps of the Nurburgring, in R&D.
8. Rev matching - brilliantly executed (read: superhuman).
9. N-custom mode (engine, dampers, steering weight, e-LSD, ESC, exhaust sound) 1944 permutations of settings. Good luck with that.
10. It's the anti-kudos hot hatch. Say you’re in a BMW M2, and you round up some halfwit in a Golf GTI. He can always go ‘well … it’s a superior car … the ultimate driving machine just got me…’
If you round up GTI wanker in a Fastback N … he’s got nothing. And you would, because after three laps, that shitbox GTI’s brakes will be going off … fading away … and yours won’t. And you’ve got Obi-Wan’s e-diff and the rev-matching, and more rubber on the road. And a better power-to-weight ratio.
The fastback is 11 kilos heavier than the hatch - and you’d have to be a pretty special driver for that to make a tangible difference on the track, but if you want to save 11 kilos, buy the hatch. It’s also cheaper.
There’s no perfect car, and the Fastback N is certainly imperfect. The interior’s a bit ‘plain’ - and I get it: the big bucks got spent on performance. But if you want a premium interior in a somewhat sporty car, this is not that car. Quite the opposite.
It’s manual only - that might get old in traffic, depending on your daily commute. Apparently a dual clutch transmission is in development. No word yet on availability timeline. It’s a sweet manual when you’re driving like you mean it. But it’s a pain in the arse in traffic, like every other manual transmission on earth.
Rear vision in the Fastback is a bit like looking through a porthole. When you look in the central rear vision mirror it’s mainly showing you the car’s interior, with a small window into what’s actually happening with the traffic behind.
It’s fine - you can see what’s going on. An inevitable compromise with the Fastback. But if you like bigger rear vision, buy the hatch.
Engine bay: not nearly enough bling. Just saying. It’s purely cosmetic - but they could have tried harder there, cosmetically.
What you will like, though, are the primary driver ergonomics - they’re excellent, right from the seat and wheel, the pedal placement - all the way to the shift light. Really good.
Cabin ambience - also excellent -engine note and bi-modal exhaust crackle. You could bottle that and sell it to performance nutjobs like me.
Bang for your buck - unbeatable. If you can drive, this is a sensational car. If you want to learn to drive - really drive - this car is ideal. It’ll adapt up with you, as your skillset improves. And it’s a turnkey solution - track ready out of the box: drive it there and earn your PhD in driving really fast and not crashing.
You can even have a proper spare tyre. I asked them specifically on this point. A space saver is standard. But a genuine wheel with TPMS sensor and proper performance tyre is a genuine accessory. It lifts the cargo bay floor about an inch - but that’s the only compromise.
That’s about it on this report: The Fastback is notionally $1500 more than the hatch. Luxury pack is $3000 - heated wheel and front seats, proximity key, rain sensing wipers, bit of dead cow, which may or may not be actual dead animal. Stuff like that.
If you tick every box it’s about $50k in traffic here in the Trailer of Arse. And that makes it cheaper than the Golf GTI it’s about to murder with extreme pre-meditation. So that’s nice.
Frankly, I’ve never seen a carmaker have a first crack at performance and get it this right.

Former Mk7 Golf R owner here I recently picked up a 2019 N Hatch and couldn’t be happier. I did a lot of research and your review of the hatch made me consider it. Following that I test drove it against the Megane RS, Type R and 308 Gti and it was a no brainer. Best bang for buck and smiles this thing was a winner. Four years ago I would have laughed it someone had said I’d own a Hyundai but here I am! Cheers for advice John!

cschlep anything you miss from the R that you dont have on the N? This is my mental battle atm🤷🏽‍♂️
@cschlep
@cschlep 5 лет назад
@@DKVithy Well the big one is no DSG so if you can put up with a manual then that is no issue. The manual and clutch in this car is great. The interior and materials look and feel cheaper but it's really not that bad and you get used to it and don't even notice. The build quality is right up there. If you get the Lux pack it has everything the R has and some more but obviously the big thing is front wheel vs all wheel. I prefer all wheel but the N is a lot more fun to drive, proper drivers car and much cheaper!

@craig mitchell pillred That's true there is no denying the Gti is quicker around the track but that's not primary reason for me to buy. I wanted the best all rounder and the one that put the biggest smile on my face. I wasn't of a fan of the Gti's interior ergonomics (small steering wheel and instrumentation back to front and too high) and the car had little character with little to no exhaust sound. Other than that it's a cracking understated car.

Very interesting comment. I recently bought a new VW mk7.5 R. I am genuinely asking if you had considered the bmw M140i before purchasing this i30 N. I also like what this Hyundai offers but I feel the refinement is subpar to the R and M140i.

I was choosing between a Mazda 3 Astina or the i30N and boy am I glad I went the N! I also managed to stick to my guns with the dealers and picked it up with lux packaging @ $45K even. This car is easily the most fun, practical, head turning and satisfying car i've ever owned.

In same situation at the minute - I own an astina manual but want to upgrade to something more fun - the i30 fastback n. When choosing between the two, did you drive the Mazda enough to reasonably compare the two and draw conclusions? Ie is there something that stood out in particular that was worth choosing the N over the Astina? (I’m reaching to try to justify wanting the upgrade), but saw this comment which of course was the most surprising so thought I’d comment given the chances.

I was going to replace my VF Redline with an i30N and the wife was going to trade her SantaFe in for the new model Santafe but she decided a small hatch would be better for her than a family truckster so bought an i30SR Premium leaving me to have the boring car this time. I ended up buying a Ford Everest Titanium as I don't mind a bit of 4x4 fun and it has a heap more room than the SantaFe and looks a bit more manly. After driving her i30SR a few times now I'm glad I didn't buy a i30N as it is very noisy on the freeway and is a very harsh ride and the DCT is crap. The i30SR has been a disappointment for us with a yet to be rectified problem of not wanting to start when warm and a blind spot monitoring system that has failed for a 3rd time. The i30 is a way over rated car and compared to my sister's new Holden Astra RS feels cheap and is even more expensive to own with 6 month service intervals and an average fuel consumption of 7.3/100 compared to the Astra at 5.9/100 both doing the same trip. The N might be a great little car but as a complete package has a little work to do on interior quality something VW know very well how to do deliver on in the Golf.
@DawGGG85
@DawGGG85 5 лет назад
After 6 months of driving my N I still have a smile on my face. My Mk6 GTI was far from this level of driving experience. Ok, the interior isn't as good as a VW/audi, but should that be the reason to add another 5-10k of hard earned cash?

I finally got to drive the i30 fastback N. Having read and watched as many social media comments as I could find, I was interested to see for myself. All of what has been reported on by John and other experts is true. This car is an immediate cracker and fulfilled all my expectations. I love the fact that it can creep about in stealth dropping off the G- kids at school and a then a trip to the shopping centre and then with a tiny press of a button have it fanging my favourite stretch of windy road. Mine possibly may never see a track day but I love the thought that it's always ready and eager to try. I have driven VW's, Honda and Audi's and this car belongs and proves itself very worth and capable in that hot hatch niche. This same car is impressive and I have no qualms in proudly owning one and wearing as much merch I can find to show my support. Well Done Hyundai, you've won me. I look forward to what the N division will bring us next.

As a GTi owner, which I purchased brand new 4-5 years ago and have spent a few dollars modifying, including a stage software patch to take it up to 234 kw at the flywheel. Also some suspension upgrade, and intake upgrade. I can without a doubt say my next purchase will definitely include this , or whatever iteration it is at that stage , in the consideration. I am amazed at the level of detail and smart use of technology. I can’t wait to see where they take the development of this platform.

Making a car go fast is easy. Making a car reliably go fast, to the point you'll back it with the same warranty for track use? That is stellar. This strikes me as the very essence of over-engineering, and I'm willing to bet this car is going to become popular in the Tuner market as all the typical driveline "upgrades" are already built in.

Reducing the treble a heap in the head unit helps. I've actually gone way overboard to install a digital signal processor, amps, sub and replaced speakers. Just to get a balanced flat output required significant equalisation as well as adding a phase shift at one frequency. Really happy with the outcome now. Driving wise this thing does such an amazing job of being a daily driver with that extra bit of performance pizzaz.

This car has definitely come at the right time for me. I have been looking for a performance car to upgrade to from my Hyundai i30 and then this came out. I took it for a test drive and John has it right. The i30 N is incredible when you put it up against every other brand out there, it kills it. The handling in the i30 N along makes you wonder why you have to pay so much for a bmw. Its like they have takin the handling of an m2 matched it with the power close to a golf r and then developed and brakes package that is better then brembo and made it all affordable. I'm happy to say I have found a car that give me the freedom to have both a track ready car and daily all for a reasonable price with an excellent warranty. Well done Hyundai. Keep up the great work John.

Driving a hatch i30 N for 3 years and 3 months now. Litteraly the only downside I have found is the small fuel tank, but where I live (Belgium) that isn't really a problem with a gas station around pretty much everywhere. I drove 50.000 km so far and I still love being in the car every second of the way. It's a decent commuter if you don't care to much about fuel consumption. I get around 8.5l/100km on highways, but then again I never drop it below sport mode. It's a bloody decent track car. Ultra stable in corners and alot faster then most people give it credit for. I do regular track days at the racetrack of Zolder and it's easy to drive consistent laptime of around 2 minutes there, without the brakes giving up or the engine overheating. And what I do the most for fun is rally events. Imo the B roads of the Ardens, German Eifel and Luxemburg is where the car shines. It is absolutely phenomenal on those roads and I have no hard time keeping up with cars that are multiple times more expensive. If you know what you're doing M2, Porsche Cayman, Alpine, ... will have a hard time keeping up. After 3 years of driving, tons of fun, 0 problems,... I can 100% guarantee you that this will be a car you don't ever want to part from. And if you ever do, it will probably be the car you regret selling a few months/years down the line.

Got mine just over a week ago, the badge had somewhat of an impact on my decision, but a positive one as I know hyundai are really bringing it to the bigger brands. So I knew I was getting a good car (wouldn't have said that 10 years ago about them). But the maintenance costs were the biggest factor, was looking at the civic type r, but the cost of brakes, tyres etc were way more than the i30n. Oh and the noise it makes, makes me grin like the joker every time!

The Stinger was way more of a miss than this, yes it’s fast, yes it’s RWD, however, the gearbox is shit, it’s not a handler. It’s so much more of a grand tourer than a sports saloon. I think the genesis will do a better job of it. However, they still need to make a BMW M2 competitor. RWD, small and with a manual transmission option.

Got mine in shadow grey, which works pretty well in a contrast to red linings and break pads. + Customization. Can drive stealth & can go nuts with crazy exhaust. + Manual transmission with rev matching is fantastic. - It's addictive. End up hitting kilometers just like that you won't even notice. => It all adds up to a pretty special, emotioNal driving experience in this price segment. Top car in my opinion.

Hi John I am a big fan of yours watch all your reviews and podcasts. I have been watching your review on the Kia Sorrento versus an SUV resize we had a A 2017 Sportage based on your recommendation it was a great car had it for four years and did 45,000 k’s. It did not miss a beat. We recently traded that up to a new Hyundai Tucson 2022 elite vehicle was very impressive. For the lines being an ex-tool maker I can appreciate the difficulty in those angles and the inside was 🤩 was very nicely done very modern very clean the car drove very nice and quiet compared to the noise level in the Sportage the Tucson was much better. I’m 72 years old and appreciate the use of getting in an out of the Tucson however we picked the car up and it had a rattle which was fixed after about three weeks of backwards and forwards the dealer was very good and lent us a car on each occasion. There was also a problem with the automatic braking when we were turning right it engaged the brakes but then wouldn’t release as we tried to drive off, two weeks later we developed another rattle in the dash. The biggest problem was when we tried to pass a truck and we engaged the excelerator significantly to overtake expecting the vehicle to drop down and take off .The engine revved but the vehicle didn’t go this happened on two occasions in trying to overtake this truck we backed off the Excelerator again and then just pushed slowly on the Excelerator which then engaged. I didn’t bother taking the vehicle back to Hyundai which I probably should’ve I decided it was time to go back to Kia. We looked at a Seltoss but they couldn’t get a GT for several months so we had a look at a GT Cerrato based on your review and my wife loved it so we went with the GT Cerato. A little bit noisy a little bit harsher in the ride but a lot of fun to drive so thanks for the review and the recommendation

So here in the US I was originally impressed by Hyundai's value proposition, pretty much right from the start. Seriously I might have bought one, but then I got to see the almost comical mechanical malfunctions some of these cars had after leaving the dealership and tooling down the road a piece. Some issues were design related, more involved cost reduced materials and the worst ones involved the cars most likely assembled on third shift when the employees were obviously sleep-working. Long ago, I realized that a lot depends on an item's price. At any given price point a car manufacturer has to decide between features and durability. The simple fact is that something has to give when an item competes on price. I vividly recall being impressed by a Ford Pinto. It had rack and pinion steering and a peppy engine and a really nice manual shift and it handled way better than the boats we drove back then. On winding mountain roads, it was a blast to drive. On the down side, the car also exploded because the gas tank literally extended into the rear bumper and it dissolved in the rain, which wasn't all bad bean because the timing belts all broke and junked the cars at less than 65,000 miles... At about the same price, no one would have chosen a VW Super-beetle based on performance. But within about 5 years of purchase, the Pinto was being recycled into something better, while the VW was barely middle aged. A price point car, with a full suite of brand new state of the art electronic and technical features made in Korea; what could possibly go wrong? For those folks who buy this car, I sincerely hope I'm wrong and these things all make 200,000 miles or at least a similar amount of kilometers.

In the late 80s, I was the proud owner of a 79 GLS VW Golf (couldn’t afford the Gti or the Pug 205 Gti), and absolutely thrashed the tits off of it back in the good old days of bugger all traffic, and two speed cameras in the whole of Victoria. When purchasing my second secondhand gearbox, the store man asked me what was the cause of it dying? “Ummmm, it wore out...” ahem. “But they don’t wear out!!!” he exclaimed. “Ummm, I guess I just kinda thrash it a bit...” ahem. “Jesus! You must be!!” And that was just one of the reasons I was a massive VW fanboy, fantastic fun and parts that just kept on going, like the everlasting dak dak of 60s Beetle, that even a hippie couldn’t destroy. Having amassed a goodly sum of money three years ago, I upgraded from my tiny little Renault Clio Sport, to a Ford Fiesta because of the unrelenting good reviews on its fantasticness. But being of an older age now, the unforgiving ride and lack of legroom for a two metre giant took its toll. I’ve got more money now, I’ll get a VW Golf R!!! Oh hang on, Dieselgate...and John really, really, REALLY hates the living shit out of them, for all the right reasons. Damn!!! What other cars are there? I ended up going to a BMW 135i. Oh the sheer joy! And, after literally growing out of THAT car, I’ve moved up to a 2018 M3 Competition. Yeh I know...Hard life! So, thank you John for steering me clear of a potential Shit Box Frustration/How Dare They journey, and steering me towards the more reliable Germans. It’s not that you’ve ever praised BMW much in any of your videos, it’s more that you’ve omitted them from criticism and have actually praised their after market service a few times, for which I can wholeheartedly agree, if the South Yarra branch is anything to go by. The best service I have ever gotten from anyone ever. Now that the i30N doesn’t look like a blown up Holden Barina from the early 90s, I would have actually considered that car as a recent choice, as the i30 I tried out a few years ago for a friend was just a woeful thing to drive and was one of the most boring things to look at ever. Barina styling died for a reason. It would have been nice if you’d shown how large and wide the back orifice of the Fastback is, given that it’s rear end is substantially different in its new Bootylicious state. I’m a drummer and that kind of thing probably matters to a lot of other people, that want to keep the practicality high and retain the ability to shove their long, wide loads into its rear. Giggidy. Maybe when I get my finances really going, I’ll consider the N Fastback for my second car. It wouldn’t look too bad beside my Ferrari red M3...🤔😉

Can’t wait for an AWD version with another 50kW. Then it will be like a Focus RS, Yet dependable. Can’t believe people are badge snobbing this car, I’ve sat in the thing, the interior is fine in lux spec, perhaps a little more suede on the door rests and that’s it. I mean it’s actually completely refreshing to have an old school logical layout to everything, nice manual handbrake, no BS screen for an instrumens cluster. Indicator stalk on the correct side of the wheel. Actually allowing the driver to decide exactly how the drive modes are configured. Having a simple button for the rev match feature. Only tiny improvements please, LED rear turn signals and central mounted analogue tacho? Perhaps and OPTION of even sportier seats (an NR version?) There is so little to complain about. Hyundai or Kia now need to make a BMW M2 type RWD couple and job done.

In fact I’m hoping my sister will buy one when it comes to replacing her Corolla, I think she will love it. She will have her own performance car without having to borrow my Ute. Just one question John. You said you can get a full sized spare wheel, is that just for the fastback or for the hatchback as well? Not having a full sized spare could be a deal breaker for her. I actually despise space savers, I wish more companies would follow Hyundai’s and Toyota’s lead in that compartment. Thanks for sharing John and I was actually really looking forward to this video. Great review as always John. Love your use of satire, personal touch and hard facts in combination. I respect your view very much, and given I was a "standard" driver with otherwise reasonably normal demands, the Hyundai N badges would be a a great choice. Since you asked though, my choice would still be Honda Civic Type R - yes one is the brand (I never have a problem with them in the past - but I also have a 15 years old Hyundai Getz that I have no problems with either). The other reason is just because I'm unreasonably different, I really love Honda's HDMI plug for their entertainment system. With that, I can plug a Raspberry Pi and make the display show whatever I want (like a TV), not limited to just Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. Being able to do this without having to modify anything is just a big plus to me
