Is this car as efficient as it appears to be good? Could it even be the new "best electric car"?
I try to find out how efficient this long awaited electric Hyundai really is and show you how to achieve the best results. And over 550 kms/340 mls of range!

I just got this car a couple weeks ago and just started playing with the paddle shifters that change the different regenerative braking levels. At level 0, it feels like the car will not slow down at all when I take my foot off the drive pedal. It's a really cool way to drive that not a lot of people are talking about. The only other mention I recall seeing of using level 0 is for cleaning your brakes for people that solely drive with i pedal.

If you manage to adapt the driving-style to make best possible use of coasting you will easily exceed the official range. Ioniq5 will not use regen if you are in Zero for 10 times, so if you still want to make use of regen than you better brake with the paddles. I am sure at summer weather you can go around 12 kwh/100 kms.

@@ecodriver1746 I coast as often as I can. 2017 IONIQ (28 kw Battery). I get 280 km city/240 km HWY. But if a car is passing me going downhill I don't, darn thing speeds up too much. Ioniq 5 in the future for me.

Great review and commentary. if you want to eliminate variables such as different inclines and traffic conditions on travelling up and then down a landscape, you might want to include the return trip within the review. Including any charging problems. this would give a more concrete evaluation, purely because almost all the gradients would balance. If you look at the graph you showed, it isn't symetric, so the down journey isn't the same as the up journey, doing the same journey in reverse should remove any bias due to road differences. I only wonder about this because most things we do are a loop; we go to a place and mostly return the same way. that's how we commute. there and back. If I am driving there and back on the same charge, all the ups and downs are pretty much the same. generally we go from a point to another and back, but most chose the same route each way. If you have time with the vehicle to include the return trip along the same route, that would be awesome. I've subscribed, and liked this video.

Thanks for your kind words! Normally I do a specific mountain-consumption and recuperation test with BEVs, however, I had this car only for 3 hours, so I couldn't do it. But I've done it with the Kia EV6 (same configuration as this Ioniq5), you find it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Xt2jwmpq1V4.html

Love your content. Glad to hear you liked the ioniq5 drivetrain. I have one coming. Two questions. 1. Do you feel the RWD LR, has enough power up hills? I live in a hilly area. 2. How much energy do you think you get back from regen braking over the course of your driving loop? 20%? 30%? Thanks
@ecodriver1746
@ecodriver1746 2 года назад
Thanks. 1) Personally I'd be happy with the RWD, except for the winter conditions around here. 2) Difficult to say. From experience with other cars I guess it will be around 22-24 %. The maximum possible is - under perfect weather conditions - around 50 %. I've done the recuperation test with the EV6 a week after this test, weather was very cold but we still got 45%. Kona and E-Niro were at 49 and 48 %. EV6: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Xt2jwmpq1V4.html Kona and e-Niro are on the german channel only at the moment but will come on the this channel over the next few weeks.

Great video! Do you think rear wheel drive in a cold climate like Canada may be an issue with winter tires? I’m currently driving a 2020 Ioniq front wheel drive and with winter tires I have no issues at all in snow, my concern is how the rear traction will behaves in snow. Thanks
@ecodriver1746
@ecodriver1746 2 года назад
Thanks. With all the electronics in modern cars that do what only a good driver could do 30 years ago I think RWD is fine. I live in a similar climate and will probably go with an RWD (KIA EV4) next year to replace an AWD petrol car.
@lanceareadbhar
@lanceareadbhar 2 года назад
I wouldn't be too concerned in this RWD car with snow tires in the Canadian winter for normal driving. Double check that the RWD models in Canada have a heat pump. For some reason, all RWD versions in the US did not come with a heat pump, but that is likely different for the Canadian RWD version.

Do you have any indication of consumption at 120 kph over a long distance? If not what would you expect at about 10 Celsius?
@ecodriver1746
@ecodriver1746 2 года назад
At 120 kph it will be around 20-22 kwh/100 kms, a drop in temperature by 3 degrees celsius from 13 to 10 will probably cause 1 kwh/100 km more consumption, if internal heating will be used in both cases.

Hi, quick question. When I put the ioniq 5 into Auto regen from evel Zero (coast) it does not seem to allow me to coast at any stage. I want the auto to kick in when in traffic etc.... but it always seems to have a minimum of level 1. Am I doing something wrong ?
@ecodriver1746
@ecodriver1746 2 года назад
There is a point in the menu where you can set the basic position of regen (paddles overrule this only for this trip). Maybe you can set to zero there, but I am not sure, as I had the car only for my trip and not enough time to familiarize myself with those nitty-gritty details.

@ecodriver1746
@ecodriver1746 2 года назад
Hi Miodrag, I don't think so as the dealer told me they won't get them in as demo-cars (only if somebody orders one) as the benefit is rather small, if even measurable during driving.

I'm waiting for my Ioniq 5 in the USA. I reserved one months ago. I still haven't decided whether to go for range with the RWD or performance with the AWD model. I'm leaning towards the AWD because it would do better in all kinds of weather conditions. I live in Los Angeles, but I plan to do road trips so an AWD vehicle would be better for that. Also, I figured I could get more efficiency and range by driving mostly in ECO mode and only switch to Performance mode when I need it or want to have some fun. Do you think it's possible to get much more than the official stated 256 miles of range on the AWD model if you drive in ECO with i-pedal engaged? Thanks.
@ecodriver1746
@ecodriver1746 2 года назад
First rule to get better range is to disengage i-pedal. This leads to a driving style where you either brake or accelerate, whereas with zero regen (and use of paddles to brake) it's much easier to coast and therefore reduce consumption. First rule of eco-driving with EVs is to reduce braking, as you never get back what you 've invested before or have to invest afterwards. See here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-81sU-OYu05k.html I southern california climate you should easily get 250+ miles.
@theexmann
@theexmann 2 года назад
@@ecodriver1746 Interesting. So what's the benefit of one pedal driving? I thought it was to be more efficient. I guess the more important issue is to drive the car in ECO mode as much as possible as I stated earlier to extend the range beyond the official range.
@ecodriver1746
@ecodriver1746 2 года назад
OPD: I guess that's something EV-driving is/can be different from "traditional" cars and that's important for the manufacturers and some EV-drivers are keen on telling how "real" EV-driving is done.... (I'm a bit sarcastic now). ECO-mode: One problem with ECO is that some drivers then tend to push the car harder as they don't "feel" the same power and the result is the opposite of what you want. The important thing with ECO-mode is that the driver is in ECO-mode with his driving style as well, otherwise you might see the opposite effect. I've done way more than the official range with Normal mode as well, it's about the driving style, as explained here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EfgwLy7r-eA.html You can coast with OPD, but it's more work.
@theexmann
@theexmann 2 года назад
@@ecodriver1746 In my case, I'm coming from driving a 2004 Prius I bought new so it's been 18 years and 276,000 miles so my driving habits would lend themselves well to driving in ECO mode. I'm also used to coasting to a stop light now. I'm not a hyper miler by any stretch, but I know I'll get more than 256 miles from the Ioniq 5 AWD. I've come to the conclusion that the AWD is more important in the long run than the larger official range of the RWD. The quicker charging rate of the Ioniq 5 along with the ever increasing 350kw chargers in the USA and Southern California in particular, pretty much eliminates issues of range anxiety.
@ecodriver1746
@ecodriver1746 2 года назад
Well, this is then perfect scenario, you should easily be able to exceed the official range. The good thing with Ioniq5 is that the engine in the front is decoupled in Eco-mode, so it's you who decides when to use it (the question is do you need it, it's still weight that is carried around).
