One use of the regen brake paddles you didn’t mention is that you can use the left paddle to temporarily go into I-pedal mode for a particular stop, and then the car goes back to whatever level you had it set at. Also, I do change regen levels while driving, as do other EV drivers I’ve heard from. For example in city driving I use one pedal mode, but on the freeway I using coasting mode. You get the best efficiency that way. Being able to change it with the paddles is very convenient.

That's the problem with a lot of "reviews" these days. Few reviewers go beyond what is immediately obvious and don't take the time to learn a vehicles full capabilities or even read the manual so they miss features that people who own the vehicles are fully aware of and appreciate.
@davidhumeston5292

I think he was referring to the complexity of using shift paddles. People still judge cars by stuff and cup holders... The less physical things in your car like buttons knobs paddles the less things that break. The easier the car is to build. The price goes down. Smartphones are perfect example. If people had it their way we'd still have blackberries with keyboards.... Cars should not be designed by a panel of people trying to make everybody happy.. You always end up with a silver crossover with a gear shifter in the center console...

@@davidhumeston5292 not sure I get your point, but the Ioniq 5 has the gear selector on the column and a center console that slides forward and back, on the Limited trim.

@@davidhumeston5292 I understand where you are coming from but that doesn't mean having mechanical controls is worse for the consumer simply because they exist. Having to turn on a car and navigate a touch screen to open the glove box with an electro mechanical actuator vs a 25 cent mechanical latch based on a 100 year old proven design is not reducing complexity or improving ergonomics or reliability it's making it worse. The fact that the HMI (human machine inteface) is a simple screen is irrelevant if the underlying hardware is overly complex and prone to failure. There are just as many poorly made electro mechanical actuators and circuit boards as there are poorly made knobs and switches. None of the physical controls in my 1992 Miata I owned as a daily driver from new until 2018 broke. Ironically the only thing that did break was the power windows. There is a reason why luxury cars with all the automatic bells and whistles are an absolute nightmare to own as they age vs a car with simple and robust physical controls and simple electronics. Last year I paid $200 for a new old stock toaster designed in 1940's that is 100% mechanical with no electronics whatsoever. It lowers and raises the toast automatically without even touching it and toasts better than almost every modern toaster on the market today by measuring the temperature of the toast rather than using a timer. They are known to last for more than 60 years of daily use and some people hand them down to their grand children who carry on using them.

The regen braking paddles is something I absolutely use all the time. 3 and i-pedal for urban driving, traffic and approaching stop junctions and using to 2, 1 or 0 for open road driving. I did find that the 0 level is closer to having the car in neutral, as it gains speed going downhill and has no engine breaking whatsoever. 1 feels exactly the same as my 3 series BMW although I know ICE cars have different levels of engine breaking so it may feel different depending on what you drive.

I noticed that there were cars in the lane you wanted during the first lane change assist that didn't work. They were going slower than you as well. I think the car m made a good call. The blind spot cameras that appear automatically in the driver display is very nice, and something that every car manufacturer should offer. When you have your turn signal on and there is a vehicle in that space, it should provide an audible, visual, and even haptic response to warn the driver that they're about to do something bad. The assisted lane change feature is nice to have, but the driver mentions that it's like Tesla. Except that it's included instead of an extra $12,000, or $200 more per month... The driver eye sensors in the Mach-E seem like a better approach than the steering wheel pressure/force method. Driver monitoring is going to be more important to overall safety than many other features.

TBF the 12000$ Tesla system will also choose when to change lanes automatically, and also works every time.
@bilgyno1

As an owner of an Ioniq 5, I can confirm that this ADAS is nothing like the $12k FSD option on Tesla. HDA2 works well enough to make highway driving more relaxed, but it doesn't navigate on the AP. Yes, it does do automated lane change, but it doesn't prompt you like Tesla. The ADAS is completely disconnected from the navigation system, so it doesn't know that you have to move left/right. But where the difference is really huge is in city driving. We now see where FSD is going with all the Beta videos, and Hyundai is years behind. If you use the steering assistant, you will find that it will disengage regularly in the middle of a turn (and not signalling that it disengages). Or if you're on the adaptive cruise control, and the car in front of you moves to a different lane, the car may accelerate right into a line of cars waiting for a traffic light. It accelerates fiercely in a bend, because it only 'looks' straight ahead. Then has to brake hard after the bend as the car in front comes back into view.

My only concern with the side camera view on the dash is that the driver doesn’t look at the lane they are entering.

@scottjentsch

@@ralphrietveld So, no audible or haptic warning? If I put on my left turn signal in a Model 3/Y, I have to look to my right to see a blind spot camera so that I don't run into a vehicle that I should be able to see in my mirror if I do some thorough checking? I can't look left and right at the same time. On the Ioniq 5, it appears that the blind spot camera image appears in the corresponding side of the instrument panel display. Yet another reason that cars should have an instrument panel, not just a big tablet in the center stack. Do the S/X have the blind spot camera views on the instrument panel? I'll stand by my original comment that cars should provide audible and even haptic warnings when you're going to do something bad. My backup monitoring system goes out of its way to let me know I'm getting too close to a curb when parking, I think it would be handy to get some warnings when changing lanes at 70 mph.

9:40 in HDA2, if you do a 'half press' of the blinker, it will keep blinking until it has switched lanes and turn off the bljnker. Some of them would have a sound to remind you, but some, (I'm looking at you Ford Mach-e), only had a visual signal. In fact, I saw one review of the Mach-e where the car was being tested, (not Munro Live, but Zac and Jesse from Now You Know), where the car was under its ADAS system where it almost drove them off the road! This Hyundai seems like a well-put-together vehicle, but my personal choice would be the Kia EV6, which is essentially the same vehicle, but better looking, IMHO. BTW, when Ben was trying to get the car to change lanes automatically, the second time, (when he wanted to show us, it wouldn't do it. The reason was that there was a car in that lane within the distance that the Hyundai would have needed to merge. Sometimes you want it to coast forever. I often find myself coasting to a stop using only different levels of regen before holding the paddle down to full stop. (Kona only does single pedal driving down to creap speeds.) holding the left paddle adds a fifth level or regen and brings you to a stop. I don't think of it like regen as much as a drag setting. We recently rented a Hyundai Santa Fe, and the Ioniq 5’s “Highway Driving Assistant” (HDA) seems to behave very similarly. I really liked how it managed steering assistance: Unlike Tesla Autopilot, it isn’t a “pretend self-driving system”; it’s a back-up safety system! There’s no “mode switch” between “you’re driving” or “the car is driving.” Specifically, you and the car both simultaneously control the wheel, but your steering input always trumps the car’s. So, you are always in control of the steering, but most of the time, the car automatically provides the same steering input as you do. That, plus it automatically keeps the car perfectly centered in its lane (again the vast majority of the time). You’re always in-control, but if you unwittingly get distracted for a second, the car is very likely to “cover for you.” Last I heard at least, with Tesla Autopilot, there’s a clear *mode switch* between you driving or Autopilot engaged. With Autopilot engaged, you keep your eyes on the road and you hands on the wheel just in case you have to intervene. If you make any significant intervention though, it disengages Autopilot. You have to then turn it back on. Why?
@jobney
@jobney 2 года назад
The Kona EV is the same way. I have it set to maximum. It reduces a lot of the fine movement you need to do so it helps with driving fatigue and also gives you another form of road sense. If you were to look away from the road you can still feel where you are in the lane by the direction and force feedback the stearing gives you. It's one of those things you incorporate into your driving style. (along with the instant acceleration that EVs have. When I drive my wife's Subaru Forester it feels like a tractor. I'm swerving all over the lane and the acceleration is so slow and delayed. ...and the noise it makes... Like a nest of hornets was just kicked under the hood. I always have to ask her if this is the sound of normal operation.

I think the paddles for regen is supposed to be like gearing down to reduce speed in an ICE vehicle. One of the reasons I love Teslas so much is that aside from the steering wheel, nothing about it reminds me of a traditional car - it's refreshing rather than reminiscent (and now they've even gone and reinvented the wheel). It feels truly futuristic in every way. My boys still have cars where you have to choose between acceleration or economy, a comfortable ride or a sporty ride, quick shifts or smooth shifts... once the novelty wears off, it just makes me appreciate even more how Tesla (especially on Models 3 and Y) give you a well tuned suspension, all the performance, all the efficiency, all the regen, all the time. If I want to get ahead at an intersection, all I have to do is mash the throttle and I've crossed the intersection before the guy in the next lane has even crossed the stop line... all without a fuss. Its lame when you have to hope you hit the proper button combination for launch control, step on the brake and the gas at the same time. Then, when the revs are bouncing off the limiter, the exhaust starts popping, the rear end squats noticably; everybody is looking and 99% of the time they're not thinking I'm cool, but rather, what's wrong with this guy... and it just gets embarrassing.

Chevrolet uses a single paddle behind the left side of the steering wheel. When pulled it ramps up reaeration to the vehicle's maximum amount but does not apply the friction brakes for a full stop. This is a popular feature more automakers should apply. The Hyundai paddles would be very useful for efficient driving. Toggling between zero regen for flat steady travel and increasing levels of regen to deal with hill decent, traffic, or reentering surface traffic is a very efficient way to drive. Zero regen is best for highway use. Aside from steep down slopes regen is not useful at steady speeds. Nevertheless cruise control in most vehicles will often engage regen when slight variations in slope, wind pressure, or pavement cause the vehicle to slightly overshoot the target speed. This wastes energy since less that the kinnetic energy lost to regen is returned to the battery and 2-7% lost again coming back out of the battery. Most Americans seem more interested in 0-60 times and fast on-ramp acceleration than learning to get the most range out of their EV. The driver has a huge impact on the range an EV will deliver.

@luca7069

Your take on the paddles is honestly completely wrong. Regen intensity is the one parameter that needs to be easily changeable, and surely not trough touch screen crap. Why? Because different roads and driving conditions require different amounts of engine braking or regen: sometimes you just want the car to coast along (0 pedal driving is much better than 1 pedal), sometimes you want to have just a tad bid of regen (downhill section, keeping the speed constant), other times you want a bit of a stronger regen (you have to take a tight turn), sometimes you want the car to outright stop (coming up to a red light). EVERY EV should have the paddles. It just makes the driving more engaging and more efficient than any other mode. During a trip with a KIA Soul EV i managed to get better miles per kWh using them than just the one pedal...the paddles just enable you to manage the regen so well. It also becomes very natural pretty quickly.
