After ~140,000 miles on my 2012 Hyundai Sonata, I had fuel problems ... I decided to replace the GDI pump [PN: 35320-2G720] for a variety of reasons ...[ one reason was my local Hyundai parts guy told me that while they had replaced the high pressure GDI pump, they had never replaced the "low pressure" fuel pump that sits in the tank]. This video has "real-time" segments of the installation process. Check the SHOW MORE for video time and segment description.
Note: I replaced the GDI pump only, as compared to the "kit" that also includes the high-pressure fuel rail, because my local Hyundai parts guy said that their SOP for replacement was replacement of GDI pump only. High-pressure fuel rail is high pressure .... typically 2,000 to 3,000 psi !! Connection of high-pressure fuel rail to GDI pump outlet is VERY important. Fuel leaks are definitely NOT wanted at all.
5,000 mile follow-up quickie video [with 45K mile update] is at: • Hyundai / Kia GDI fuel...
...... SYMPTOMS ......
Long crank time for starting after engine off overnight [~10 seconds];
Poor acceleration & power ... especially when engine was cold;
Engine stutter, extreme HESITATION, and almost going to a stall (especially when trying to accelerate too fast ... too fast being greater acceleration than a Ford Escort going up a steep hill);
Mileage drop of 20 to 25% from typical;
Eventually, engine check code for low pressure in fuel rail appeared.
APOLOGIES in advance if video seems dull & tedious ... goal is document AND provide reasonably complete information to replicate solving a problem to as many folks as possible. At times, step-by-step for one is great, but super laborious for another; while quick and simple for some can be a "what?!" for others; . VIDEO TIME and DESCRIPTIONS are listed [think of them akin to chapters in a book] in order that you can skip sections that you feel are unnecessary for your skill set.

I estimate that the GDI pump "worked" approximately 110 to 180 million strokes before failure of the seal(s) on the GDI piston. The awful-looking oil was very likely due to the gasoline making its way past the worn GDI piston seal(s) into the overhead cam and thereby contaminating the engine oil.
