I read about this a year ago and got it changed out at a garage. My old PCV valve was covered with gunk. After the new one, my 2013 Sante Fe wasn't burning oil and I was thrilled, seemed like it was fixed. Until about 4 months later, back to burning oil badly again. :( The only thing that seems to slow down the burning a little is when I use Lucas High Mileage Oil Stabilizer. The search continues. Sadly, I have a lot of friends with the same vehicle all with the same exact heavy oil consumption. Great video though. Definitely one of the better ones I've watched.
@@sallyalvarez9661 Abso Fucking loutley...... My 2016 keeps burning oil and cylinder 3 is getting oil inside it and it's causing the engine to misfire due to messing up the plugs. Constantly changing the plugs and pouring oil in. Absolutely unacceptable
@@sallyalvarez9661 The one in california is the one I was talking about. It started in like April this year. If thats the one you talking about, I didnt know that was closed.
Stumbled upon this issue when looking up the lubricant for the seat tracks....I can't believe what's going on here. I have a 2017 Santa Fe with the 2.4L engine with over 170K miles...and never had an issue with oil consumption. Of course that doesn't happen with any of my vehicles, as my great grandad told me back in the 80's to run a can of "Berrymans B-12 Chemtool" in every other tank of gas. Pour in the can and then fill with gas....that simple. It prevents carbon from getting behind the piston rings and not allowing the expansion and contraction of the rings needed as the engine heats and cools. Also....you shouldn't be using that ethanol crap in your engine, and only use 100% gasoline....that ethanol has so much particulate matter in it, it will literally wreak havoc throughout your fuel system, engine and exhaust system...don't try to save a few cents at the pump on the ethanol, as you'll pay the price down the road like a lot of you are doing right now paying for extra oil and risking potential engine seizure. Keep a few cans of B12 in your vehicle in the backseat and pour one in every other time you fill up your car and you will never have the oil consumption problem....and...quit using the worthless "ethanol"....always 100% pure gasoline! Always use a good quality synthetic oil as well....traditional oils have so much butyrol peptide waxes that they gum up engines like crazy after just 10-20K miles.
It’s funny how we forget about the previous solutions we encountered, I’ve done this fix before on ‘02 Honda Accord ex but now 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe burning up the oil almost immediately a week after needs 1/2 qt or so, I’ll change the PVC valve - we are grateful for your videos awesome info and great video angles as always…update *****5/27/2023 still burning oil 1/4 quart every week so one quart approximately per month driving maybe 110-200 miles monthly- I changed spark plugs, PCV VALVE, oil change, even fuel additive to clean carbon still consuming oil 😡 ???????
I will try this on the weekend. I check ours bi weekly since first buying it new and it usually consumes 1/2 to 1 1/2 liters. Have never seen smoke and it never leaks. Thanks
I already replaced it with an oem original part and it is still burning oil when hard acceleration. Is there anything else I could check? Is it possible the new part is bad? Is there a way to test the pcv valve for malfunction?
122k miles Santa Fe Sport 2.0 turbo 2017 , theta II engine. Fought with Hyundai for over a year now to change our engine as we saw the problem before 100k . We maintained the car per manual, oil changes, filters and the car is now at 1qt every 300 miles consumption. Tomorrow i am changing the PCV valve. I highly doubt there will be any changes but crossed fingers. We have been 3 times denied the goodwill to change the engine from 3 different service centers. We fought hard but now i am ready to give up and trade it in as Hyundai is and will deny their defective vehicles forever. Do not buy Hyundai if you don’t want to be screwed.
They will not ever repair or recall but they will Replace the engine if it fails from loss of oil. The rings do not seal properly and they know it. The replacement is good for the life of the vehicle regardless of who owns it. Ask your service advisor. Schedule an oil change every so often with a dealer and keep all those invoices. A royal pain but nothing else you can do.
This is not a fix for this particular engine. The Theta engine family has a serious issue with oil consumption. This can be a fix for some cars. I recommend checking it just in case. If you blow in it or suck through it and you can do both successfully. You need a new PCV valve. This valve is designed to be a one-way valve only.
Our neighbor's car "shut off" randomly. Turns out it was completely out of oil. I figured she waited years for an oil change, but her window sticker was only 3 months old! We try to help her monitor it now, it burns approx one quart every 2 weeks
Hi, I have been following your channel and it was really awesome. I have a Hyundai Santa Fe 2013 model which ran only 123K KM and couple of weeks ago noticed that the oil started burning heavily and took it to hyundai showroom, they informed me that the oil resealing to be done, i got the resealing done through them. Infact post the resealing the engine was shaking a lot and they folks told it could be carburetor issue and replaced all 4 carburetor as well. but just after 500 KM of run the oil again starting burning and it reached the below low level. I am really not sure whether the showroom service center did the check properly before charging me a hefty money. Could you please help me on what other reasons could cause this oil burning.
Lots of possible fixes for oil consumption issues: Pcv valve Do an engine flush Do a combustion chamber cleaning Use a quality Syn oil for shorter oil changes Do a piston soak
There are two VVT Solenoids... The Intake and the exhaust. Just double checking you mean the Exhaust VVT Solenoid. What do you mean by "and plug" Do you mean the wired plug that is attached to the end of the VVT Solenoid? That Plug goes bad as well?
@@jwenig exactly, you need to remove the motor mounts to get to it. The plug or the gasket of the housing go bad and the cars oil consumption gets excessive.
@@RD-yc6dg yeah I watched that one thanks! Doesn’t really say how or why that causes it to consume oil. My oil is also filthy after about 500 miles which leads me to think my consumption issues might be ring related. Thoughts?
@@asianstud7 No I traded it in for a Toyota Corolla. It was a big problem, clogged my catalytic converter to the point of barely being able to accelerate up hills. Horribly designed engine piston rings or valve seals or something!
Nope, I have 2.4 2017 Santa Fe. Dealership has tons of these they are changing engines!!! At owners cost of course. Hyundai has many lawsuits about this engine but nothing to help us.
Hi I have a Hyundai Santafe 2017 Limited 2.0T. It us now sitting at 153000kms. Start showing symptoms of oil consuption .From my last oil change after 3000 kms oil tank is empty.i refilled it now again it starts getting down again almost half after 2500kms. I liked this car if you can help me that would be great Thanks
I think Returning the PVC to the back of the intake valves is a bad idea.. There's no way to keep the intakes clean. As the vapor oily residue hits the back of those coated valves it's no longer hot enough to stick. And it drips off the valves coating the cylinder walls with varnish which bakes onto the cylinder walls which tears up the rings the cylinder walls and the and the Pistons themselves. We shall see I put a new catch can on my new engine. My engine was dead reliable to 140,000 aside from the fact that it started using oil at about 100,000 MI.
I have a 2016 Sonata sport 2.0 turbo it consumes a lot of oil about a half litter per 300 miles . changed the pcv valve but the problem still the same . my exhausts turned black coz of the black smoke. but when I`m driving below 2.5 k rpm or at idle there is no smoke . idk if the problem caused by the turbo or not , any idea?
My 2.4L started using oil around 45000 miles, did a pcv and no change. Now at 67000 and it burns 1 qt. in 1000 miles. So I am testing their warranty. If they don't back their 100k 10 yr warranty they gave to every theta II owner with proper oil maintenance, I will ever buy another Kia.
If you have a Santa Fe or Sonata and your engine consumes a lot of oil, mine by 500 miles im already mostly empty, you need to take it to the dealership to do an oil consumption test to see if you can get Hyundai to replace the engine. They will ask for a lot of stuff like the service records etc.. i took mine today, will see what happens in the next week or so.
I’m having the same issue with my car. The soonest the shop could get my car in is in March so hopefully they can figure it out without it costing me an arm and a leg. What exactly do you mean by Hyundai replacing the engine? Will they do it outside of their original warranty? Because my vehicle is a 2015 with over 100k miles.
@@krissysmith4215 there is a recall, and depending on the defect they can find, they could potentially replace the engine for a new one for free. But they will check that you have all your maintenance records, and that the car has not been abused and all that stuff. I took my car again and the "found" that the oil pan seal was bad and had to take it out, clean it and reseal, it cost me $500 because is not part of that recall and my car has 140k miles
@@artmart86 thank you!! I keep up with all the recalls. That’s why it’s actually going to the shop but I don’t have written records of my oil changes so how do they find that information out?
@@nunyabizness9045 I got OEM at the dealer with 85000 miles on the clock my FS needs 1 quart of oil every 3k, this is perfectly acceptable, before i replaced valve i had to add oil every 2 weeks
@@marwin4038 I called one this week and he said the same but that also the computer plays a big part as how the engine uses the oil, so it could potentially not help. After that conversation I had another theory I did the recall for the software update so the engine doesn't go up on flames and after that it seems that the oil started to consume more, coincidence?
Trust me, its not the PCV Valve. I'm a mechanic, this dude has no idea what he is talking about. If he could stop saying "Guys", I might stop and take him seriously for a second. Just another French Canadian that is taking advantage of the viewers and misleading them into buying something that doesn't work. If he had any sense, he would research the Hyundai oil consumption issue that is affecting millions. Hyundai makes a crappy engine period and millions have the same high oil consumption issue. The best thing to do is to sell the vehicle and go Toyota. Tell all your friends and family to never buy a Hyundai again. They are junk.
And then they won't do shit. I brought my 2017 in every 1000 miles for 4000 miles. They confirmed 1.8 qts burned burned per 1000 miles. Way over the 1000 per at the top end of acceptance. That was months ago.... They basically told me because I'm the second owner and I can't produce every single receipt for service for the last 5 years they're not going to do anything about it.
Yup they had me to the same thing to "Monitor" how much oil it was burning Then they told me I needed to do a combustion cleaning that I paid for and it was a 50/50 chance car still burns oil never buying another Hyundai/Kia ever again.
If the engine starts using oil it might be cheaper just to rebuild it rather than having to spend $5,000+about as much for labor for a new engine. Id think a good engine shop would be able to rebuild it for less than $5,000 especially if it's not too far gone.
