I LOVED Robocop growing up. So you can imagine my excitement with a car company released a car that looks like Robocop.
Paul Maric reviews the 2022 Hyundai Staria to see if Hyundai's all-new people mover that shares a platform with the Kia Carnival has what it takes to compete in this segment.

Hey guys - we've just been notified of an error in the video. The base in the third row comes up and allows the third row to slide forward to expand the space (it eliminates the clumsy folded over third row that removes space). We couldn't get the third row to slide on the day, but have now seen it in another vide on the car.

As a parent of many young children I think the passenger view is a fantastic idea especially in a van where with several carseats installed it can be hard to see what the children in the back are doing. I would have loved to see easier access to the rear row (ie seat folding completely out of the way) and the option to slide the rear row forward or backwards to create more space where needed as I think practicality wise with young children those features would have made a big difference. This is one of two options we are looking at purchasing at the moment so thank you for your review, its very helpful to see in so much detail.

The big appeal to me with the Staria not often mentioned is that in addition to AWD it also has a center diff lock (4x4). While it's never going to be a great off roader it could make for a good 4x4 camper with the ability to tackle beaches and tracks AWD's will struggle on.

For the Indonesian market we get the top spec 7 seater limo model with 2nd row captain chair with leg rest. But we don't get the adaptive cruise and the 10 inch screen like you have. And also our staria features a copper trim around the exterior rather than the boring chrome or silver. We also get the heated and cooled seat for both the first and second row.

Having just spent a week hooning a new Carnival around Tasmania. I too would be going for the Kia. I always bagged out MPVs but the Kia definitely drove well, was well equipped and looks a million times better than this. The Staria gives me weird Futurama vibes. I want to buy one. I’ve had an iLoad van for almost 12 years and it’s been the most reliable vehicle I’ve ever had. I want the AWD but I don’t want the seats, at least not all of them. I’d turn it into a basic camper as I’ve done with my current van. Been waiting for an AWD van and I don’t trust VW. This looks perfect.

You won't be let down with the 2.2 diesel engine and drivetrain. Plenty of high mileage older Santa Fe's with this engine pushing past 400,000km. Shame it has been depowered by 17kw and 10nm over the Santa Fe D4HB diesel.

@dune7824
@dune7824 2 года назад
The 4motion and Htrac are just electronically controlled AWD systems. AWD can help a little on slippery surfaces but is no substitute for true 50/50 4X4 offroad. The great thing about the Staria is not the Htrac AWD system but that it indeed also offers true 4X4 which can be engaged by the push of a button. That is a game changer and will allow you to traverse beaches and 4x4 tracks that an AWD will struggle on. I'm also looking into this van potentially for a big lap. :)

Carnival hands down. We have one and is the best most versatile car I've had. Being able to remove the middle seat is a big plus, because you can have child seats in the middle row and still access the third row without having to uninstall a child seat. The configuration of the cargo area is better too because you can drop the third row and have a flat storage space.

Coming out of ownership of a Mitsubishi Pajero, having a centre armrest was a godsend for driving comfort. Being able to drive with your left elbow resting atop, made long journeys all the more relaxing and enjoyable...Until that is, I went for a test drive. 70K on-roads and the OZ spec misses out on this...yet other markets get fold down armrests. As a comparison, the LDV G10 Executive for 40K gets BOTH front and rear armrests...Hyundai OZ..A shame!

Towball download is only 100kg apparently and that is more limiting than 2500kg. Do rear seats slide and if so would that increase leg room from that you suggested? The inability to see the speedo area is really critical I think and would make this a less than desirable ride. The Carnival looks a better bet.

Seeing this car’s design the Red Fury Turbo Racer from “Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs” comes to mind or Inspector Gadget’s van. I was expecting the Staria sold ouside of Korea to be available only with the Lounge interior and exterior specifications. The Lounge version looks so much better and more premium than this does. Doesn’t seems as refined and practical as I was hoping it would be and that’s a shame because I love the exterior design. The Carnival seems like the more cerebral and much more practical choice and that’s really frustrating because it doesn’t look as good as far as the aesthetics go.

The vehicle reminds me of the old Toyota Tarago of the 1990's, but overall it looked unfinished or bland, as if the designers lost interest part-way through. And Paul really gave it a shellacking over quality, design, and execution issues. It seems that the sister brand Kia does these things so much better than Hyundai. I was surprised the second row seat didn't do more than just fold the seat squab onto the cushion, especially given what looked like a mechanism handle on the back of the cushion. I saw a few controls and such that were lifted straight from the Hyundai parts bin, which is as disappointing as only single-zone climate control in the front row. And regarding designing a vehicle to fit the majority of potential customers, Paul, I wouldn't be too hard on yourself over the "short torso, long legs" bit, because over 51% of the population fall into that category. Would I buy one in preference to a Carnival? Absolutely not: poor sound system, instruments I can't see, quality/design issues, and single-zone climate control are all deal-breakers.

The look of the Staria makes me wish a modern version of the Toyota Previa still existed today…

Definitely. Drove an '04 Estima (it was 15 years old) and for its age, it was a great car and very practical, while I would have loved for the rear seats to fold like an SUV, the trade-off was that the whole row slid like rows 1 and 2, so you could maximise the cargo area as needed and still carry 8.

It's reminiscent of the 1990 Chevrolet Lumina Van, especially in the tall tailights and angular nose, mixed with the Toyota Tarago. Interesting how what was futuristic 30 years ago is still futuristic. It's a refreshing change from the sea of bland CUVs.

shame its not the 200ps 2.2 diesel output, may have given it a bit more driving fun!. I have previously owned 2 fiat multipla's years ago so nice to see some unique styling again. Doubt this will come to the UK.
