Hyundai Veloster N Engine tear down Hyundai Veloster N TC Spec Racecar
In this video, (December 22nd,2020) We tear into the engine of a Hyundai Veloster N TC Spec Racecar.
We are going to be removing the head and changing the headgasket to prepare for our up coming race season. This car is owned by Genracer and competes in the SRO Motorsport TC Class.

Interesting vid. Key Yang turbo? Is that any good, as in reliability, etc.? 1. WAIT a min. is that an INTERFERENCE ENGINE?? 2. Are those chain guides plastic? It has a single row chain! dang. Well, I suppose they had to save money somewhere, but not so sure the timing chain would be a good place to skimp. wish the shots were more steady. The internals look bran new to me. That turbo has a big darn exit pipe.

Most if not all engines have an EGR valve.

Carbon build up didn't look to bad. You guys do c foam or Intake cleaner for preventative maintenence at all? How many miles on motor?

We dont use any C foam or intake cleaner for maintenance. Motor has around 2500 track miles on it.

Also opinions on this engine as a tuning platform? Considering getting rid of mine for something with a better aftermarket like maybe a used CTR or GTI.

I think the engine has a lot of capabilities and more and more products are coming out for it each month I feel/ CTR and GTI are great options as well

How much power were you making to pop the headgasket?

300hp area. The hp levels we run are dictated by the series to keep things close with various other cars.

Would you say that that N platform engine can handle a beating like a K-Series? Honestly the engines seem very similar.

It’s not looking good… the ports in the head * look * quite small compared to something like a k20a2 or a 4g63. I don’t have them side by side to compare. I will be looking for flow bench numbers but have not found any yet.

Hard to compare them. The Kseries (k20a2 and k24a2) are N/A engines compared to this engine that comes turbo and direct Injection. Don’t have enough data or experience with really modding the motor to see power. Our tunes are very conservative so they last long time and rules of the class keep hp Down

A garage in south Korea called LAP3 seems to have tuned one of these to get 417 hp.

Yes is has an EGR system and the Catch can does get some blow by in it...but not a lot

Any knowledge on a fix for the inner tie rod. Mine is bent after hitting a curb during snow and Hyundai only sells steering assembly. Let me know brother :)

Contact Genracer. We had that issue than figured out where to get just Inner tie rods. We would damage them time to time on track

Why did they make the hot side part of the manifold, that just seems like poor design no?

Im not sure of the exact reason they did it. Could be for production reasons and to make a smaller package due to the limited space in the bay.

The two piece on our #88 black 6 speed veloster N is actually made for an i30n before anyone made a Veloster one. We made it work to fit but the nice 1 piece down pipe is sxth element

How did u know u pressurized the Coolant system before u pulled the head ? If u did that at 300 (whp?) .. I better get some head studs on mine (LAP3 big turbo kit) 6k on it. Running very well. Been watching my data real careful tho But we don’t have coolant pressure PID to get data (OEM ECU)
