Hyundsubishi Eclipstra GLS-T Coilovers?!

Nobody makes coilovers for a first generation Elantra. Go figure. So if I want them, I somehow have to make them. It's a series of failures that brought us here so why should this one be any different?
Yoshifab really did the bulk of the heavy lifting because their out of production Mitsubishi Mirage camber plates just happen to fit my Elantra, and they provide everything that everyone else's coilover product lacks, plus the ability to bolt onto my upper strut perches. The problem has always been the diameter of all factory springs and front strut assemblies for every chassis that these steering knuckles bolt to. They interfere with the strut towers preventing me from making any useful adjustment on the Yoshifab camber plate when used on this chassis, introduces bump steer, and prevents me from using any useful tire sizes. That is what drove me to this decision. Through a series of failures I simply managed to discover which strut fit best. That is how I honed in on which car's coilovers to order. Mirage coilovers do exist but introduce their own set of problems with all the DSM stuff that I already have.
This was the right solution for this car all along. The FRONT suspension cost more than the actual engine rebuild that I performed here on this channel. It is the most expensive modification it has ever received because it's only a half complete job, but it cost as much as I spent rewiring it. I did this because no other OEM part solution or bolt on out there is ever going to fix what was wrong with the front suspension. Maybe this is the lesson I always supposed to find and demonstrate with it? I'm not the only one with a weird swap out there, or who wants to build one...
If you want to support my channel so that I can destroy brand new shiny parts for performance reasons with successful, functional, logical, well-explained reasons for doing it, please consider sponsoring my production at / jafromobile where you get early access to new releases plus extra content for as little as $1 each time I upload something. I don't want anything if I didn't work for it.
If you really want to see the other suspension solutions that were attempted. If you want to look backwards at what brought us here... then...

Doing some fun digging because I love researching stuff like this. KSport makes coilovers for the 89-92 Colt/Mirage which have the same strut mount design front and rear as the 92-95 Elantra. Using RockAuto to cross reference parts. So assuming KSport does actually have the correct top hat designs, you could likely order a set of just the top hats. Other brands may have them available as well, likely D2 or even Megan. Or it could at least give you a jumping off point. The rear strut mounts also seem to be shared with a ton of other cars that you could likely find coilover top mounts for somewhere else. For example, MaXpeedingRods sells 2g Eclipse coilovers and the rear top mounts are allegedly the same. Could likely get just a rear top hat set for $50 if you contact them. At any rate, I'm sure you have far more hours of research into this than me, and I shouldn't spend all night on it, but just thought I'd share thoughts and a potential lead. Better to share useless info that is potentially useful than not share useful info that is potentially useless? Keep up the great work!

Hey Jafro, I don't know much but I've performed somewhere around 40,000 alignments and here's my advice. Front camber shifts 0.2-0.3° positive and 0.2-0.3° negative on the driver front and passenger front, respectively, when you sit in the car. This is perfect for fighting the %2 road crown on the street but may cause a drift on the track if it's level. Front toe also shifts unevenly when sat in but it's highly dependent on the location of the tie rods in relation to the wheel hub. When you do the proper alignment at some place with a Hunter rack, ask them to have a guy sit in the driver seat or toss some weight in the seat. I prefer 0.12° positive toe on each front wheel for extra stability with the tradeoff of some tire wear. Best of luck

I know that the Elantra is just a pile of "junk" in some peoples eyes but for me its the pinnacle of what you can do with used parts and few selected new upgrades. I like how it looks like its been dug up from a scrapyard and still blows by 95% of the cars on the road with ease :). Keep the episodes coming, i'd watch you swap a bicycle tire or refill a lawn mover gas tank. The narration is what does it for me. Stay safe!

I modified used BC coilovers from an 05 lancer to fit on my last AWD 91 talon. Had to make top mounts for the rear and adapt on a section of stock shock to get the right length and lower mount. For the fronts I made camber plates, drilled out the dsm knuckles, put shims in the lower mounts for the narrower knuckle top. Fortunately I had a lathe at my disposal. Total cost $50

@@Jafromobile Your Elantra is like my Saturn SL2 that I'm building up. I can't get coilovers, they used to make them from Drop zones, and a few others in the 2000's and maybe up to 2010 or so but the aftermarket support has vanished so I have to use WRX coilovers from the 2002-2007 Subaru , which is fairly easy, the knuckle being the hardest to modify. Luckily at the moment I've managed to add H&R sport springs , KYB GR2's and a polyurethane master bushing kit and had them installed with some help from a buddy of mine, and they still feel pretty healthy but I might still pick up a set of Racetech ultimo's for the car when I do a set of RPF1 15X7's and install some 205 50 R15 Toyo Proxy track tires, or at least the track ones that still have similar tread pattern to s normal performance tire that still has good wet and dry traction. If you haven’t already, visit the web page of Intercomp or similar and have a read about the basics behind how corner weight works and what can and can not be achieved. Along with how. Just a friendly advice to take the black magic out of It. As you say yourself, it’s a great tuning tool. 👍 With a lot of rubber left in your suspension you will always have a lot of hysteresis to fight and it can be a real pain. So bumping (one man each side, standing in the door opening working the suspension) the car between adjustments is essential. Together with a thin plastic film/document binder (don’t know the proper name, sorry) between each wheel and scale, at least you have taken that parameter out of the equation. All types of binding will affect your readings. To have this done the correct way you really need to make sure the scales are leveled (no, concrete floors are not) and the ARB should be removed etc etc. But let’s leave that for now. I probably sound way to arrogant already. ☺️ Consistency and repeatability is key. As always with tuning stuff. 👍

I see 2 alternative paths that might have also gotten you to your goal of making your strut parts fit together. Instead of cutting down the rubber/steel bushing thinner, you could have counterbored the inner steel sleeve in the rubber bushing to allow the piston rod of the shock to go up into the inner steel sleeve. Leave enough thickness remaining for strength, a 1/4" thickness would be plenty strong enough. Another way would be to turn back the shoulder on the piston rod of the shock. Carbide in the lathe will absolutely cut this easily. Either way, these mods would have also given you more threads for your main nut to grab. Any machinist with a decent lathe could do either of these tasks. Just another point of view, as I am an engineer with a machine shop. BTW I love you mix and match style of car building and parts swapping. Just go with what works. Not what the catalogues and advertising says what works. Love the channel. --Doozer's Shop

Jafro, I highly suggest finding some higher quality coils or having the Megans revalved. As with any Taiwanese cheap damper body, they are known to have inconsistent damping corner to corner, massively under or overdamped overall rates, adjuster wheels that don't do anything or do the inverse of what they say they do, and springs that have very little travel and bind easily. There's shock dyno data in a BMW forum and it's absolutely disgusting. See if a local shop can revalve and or rebuild them to be consistent and have adjusters that work. If not local, there's a company called Red Shift motorsports that revalves BC coils. BC is another taiwanese universal damper assembled to fit a bunch of different chassis (just like the Megans) so maybe with a little convincing they'll do your Megans?

Hi, I like what you have done there & it pulls straight now and even on both wheels. Now it's just shocks on the back correct. The closest thing may be cruze coil over set for the rear it's a 1 bolt mount on top. You would have to make a plate for the top so it would be adjustable. For camber / caster. Can't wait to see your times on the track.

Hey jafro, super fun video. Curious, what was the reasoning behind not making an adapter for the shaft so that the adjustable mount fits directly on the shaft and then use the height adjustment on the coil to compensate? You wouldn't have needed to worry about the top nut as much then too. It would also be much easier to fit on a lathe too but you could make it with an angle grinder and a drill too. Looks like you have two top hats now rather than just the one you need and that the Megan one is acting as a spacer. I did watch this on my phone so maybe I missed that detail 😅

The Megan rear hat is what's holding up the top of the spring. It has a thick rubber and steel sleeved bushing in it, which is what you saw me cut down. If you look at the way the KYB's fit in those things, they were recessed down inside the eccentric nut, too. The pillow ball nut is just huge is all. Both struts fit it about the same. Yes, I do have 2 hats of sorts, and I had two of them even with the factory springs... but the Yoshi's aren't designed to hold springs or spring loads so I can't do what you suggest. The shaft does go through the pillow ball, though. The upper perch is just like with the factory spring, the thing that holds the spring on below the pillow ball. What I don't really need is the roller bearing thing. I put in on there because it makes the springs surprisingly easy to adjust. I'll never need that space on the adjustment, it actually let me stuff 1/2" more of the cylinder inside the threads of the lower strut mount because I left it on there. All the turning is handled by the pillow ball, so I don't need that roller bearing thing at all. It makes it look crazy. It is a little crazy. The gutted upper perches are hilarious, but the way it is right now everything works perfectly!

I'm eating my words. One way or another I'm making a new upper spring perch because I found a problem. It's not a problem right now, but it will be later. There will be no more unnecessary rubber bushing in v2.

@@Jafromobile well eating our own words never tastes very good, but I'm curious to the solution you come up with for the new problem. I always found the top hat side being much easier to deal with fabbing with mostly non specialty tools. The lowers typically have a lot more annoying challenges and loads on a MacPherson strut setup where the top is (mostly) just a pin connection.

I wanted to ask for a more detailed explaination of strut angle. Do you want the "camber" plates maxed towards the inside of the car? Or is that dependant on your siuation and what the car does? Is more always better? What happenes if I go too far with it? My PT has BC coilovers and when I got my alignment by a friend on a rack, he wimped out adjusting everything by the camber bolts i told him to use and just knocked one of the camber plates a bit to even out the camber. I know I need to actually take the time for corner balancing and legitimately adjusting the damping, but I'm a bit too far out of my element to adjust suspension. I know all the theory and angles and adjustability, but I don't know how much to adjust and what every combination feels like. Suspension 305: Dailing in Coilovers, please?

I think elantra uses mirage base suspention geometry, so mirage coilovers would work with adjustible camber plates maby??
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 2 года назад
Nah, too short, and the knuckles are from an EXPO, not a Mirage due to the DSM axles. So I'd still have bump steer issues with a vertical strut. Plus the turbo DSM drivetrain is a bit heavier. I had bad luck with the Mirage struts on this one. I'm sure I'd have had better luck with mirage coilovers, but this was the perfect fit for this swap.

@Jafromobile 2 года назад
???? I don't know? Often times when people's CC expire they don't update their info. I know that Patreon doesn't lean on people to update it. They used to expect us do it for them. I sent 1 ever notice about this to people and decided I wouldn't do it anymore. At some point, they just started removing people if the transaction bounced. I find it ethically backwards to make creators resolve this. How does one expect creators to put a price on, or police gratuity? IMO, I'm lucky that so many people are interested in supporting what I do here. Gift horse dental exams are not on my list of priorities even if it affects my production.

You are going to have none or barely any preload on the coilovers, and also the car should never be leaving the ground. You don’t need to worry about using the entire thread of the nut, it’s already a fairly long nut. Just grind the nut down.

You know what, the spring loads are backwards from what I was thinking when I put that washer on, so I ordered a 6" round to cut my own upper strut perches. Thanks for that. Yeah, the washer is useless, the bushing would separate the opposite way. It will most definitely hold long enough for me to figure out how to cut this round on a brake lathe and make my own.

I agree. Just trying to tell the whole story. I limited my human camera perspective to 400%, and cut most of the scenes where I was on my feet. I watch many other RU-vidrs who also do this, and though that sounds like justification, I feel the same way about it as you do. Camera crews just come with a paycheck and it's why we see it so often.

Hey man I’ve seen your old DSM videos and saw you ran an eBay 20g I currently have an cxracing 20g and deciding weather to return it or mount it… what was your thoughts on it?? What’s the max power people get out of them or trap times? Might just pick up a hx35
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 2 года назад
HX35 is far more potent. Have experienced a cornfed AWD example myself. The CXRacing unit won't do that. It was a low-11 second car. I ran 12.28@121 on it with a 2g AWD, and a 13.0006@116mph with in a FWD Eclipstra. Probably good for 350whp max with the right set of combos. HX35's go up into the 5's with the right exhaust turbine housing.

@@tuckerprestridge559 The HX was 11's easy. The 20g is 12-13 depending on the rest of the car. The difference between the fuel systems was night and day. You need lots of fuel and fuel line for 11's on for e85. You can get away with stock fuel stuff on the 20g with only minor mods (getting rid of restrictions and adding a high flow pump with a rewire).
