Tasarım ve Mimarlık hem iz bırakır, hem iz sürer. İz bırakmak biraz bırakılmış izlere bakabilmeyi bilmekle de ilgilidir. Sizlere bu sergide bu kampüsün geçmişine dair izleri, iz bırakan tasarım bazlı mesleklerin işaret edeceği biçimiyle sunuyoruz. Bu sergi ile şu an üzerinde bulunduğumuz mekânın, yani İstanbul Şehir Üniversitesi kampüsünün üniversite olmadan önceki işlevlerine, özellikle de Tekel Fabrikası olarak üretim yaptığı dönemlere ışık tutuyoruz. Bu alan üzerine bırakılmış eşyalar, evraklar, fotoğraflar ve çizimlerin takibiyle buraya dair kimliklerin, süreçlerin, deneyimlerin, üretimlerin, kısacası değişim ve dönüşümlerin izlerini sürmeye çalışacağız.
Achitecture and design blaze trails. They also follow the tracks left by others on their journeys. To do the one, one must be able to do the other. In this exhibition, we are doing both: presenting traces of the previous life of this campus in a way that only pathbreaking design-based professions can. Through this exhibition, we are bringing to light the past lives of the campus of Istanbul Şehir University, especially from its time as a statemonopoly factory, or TEKEL. Through the traces left by its past-abandoned objects, documents, photographs, and drawings-we aim to create a space to explore the identities and experiences of those who traveled this space before us, the currents and eddies that once flowed through this space, and, through these, the changes and transformations that mark the journey of the campus from TEKEL factory to ŞEHIR University.
Mekan ve Dönüşümün İZLERİ / TRACES of Space and Transformation
Tarih, bellek, mekan, süreklilik ve kırılma… Dönüşüm… Mekan “kevn” kökündendir. Oluşun meydana geldiği yerdir. Oluşların sürekliliği mekanı değiştirir, çeşitler. Bilinç ve bilgiyle kurulan her yeni mekan önceki yaşamları ve potansiyelleri birlikte taşır. Mekanın öznesi insandır. Kıymeti içinde yaşayanlarındandır (Şeref-ül mekân bi’l-mekîn). Mekanı ve insanı geçmiş ile gelecek arasında tutan bağlar, dönüşümün doğru izler üzerinden sürülmesiyle mümkündür. Geçmiş ile gelecek arasında kurulacak dialogda kimi binalar, nesneler sessizce şahitliğe devam ederken, kimileri konuşmaya devam etmelidir. Fabrikaya ait bazı mekanlar işte bu nedenle izleri sürülmesi gereken, konuşmaya bugünün dilinden devam etmesi gerekendir. Bu sergide yer alan hava fotoğrafları, fabrika dönemi -metruk dönem - üniversite dönemi fotoğrafları, fabrika ve üniversite halinin maketleri ve çizimler bugüne uzanan dialoğun bir parçası olarak kurulmuştur.
History, memory, space, continuity, rupture, transformation . . . In Turkish, the word space, mekan, comes from the Arabic root k-w-n, meaning “existence.” A space is thus literally a place where a thing comes to exist. Yet things also change and diversify the space in which they exist, and thus, as a space transforms over time, it continues to carry traces of its past lives together with its new potentials. The subject of space is the human being. The quality of a space derives from those who occupy it. The changing nature of the connections between space and human beings, between past and future, leave traces behind. In the dialogue between past and future, some buildings and objects continue their conversations, while others remain silent. This is why some spaces belonging to the factory must be brought into today’s conversation, why traces of the factory’s past life must be sought out and brought to light. The aerial photographs, the pictures of the factory during the various stages of its life (factory period, abandoned period, and university period), the models of the factory and university, and the drawings and other materials that are included in this exhibition are all part of this dialogue, bringing together the past and the present and the space and the people who make it what it is.
