Oh, yes, nothing like a good hard pruning to make a plant grow and look fabulous. I have helped many inexperienced gardeners here in the USA learn how to take care of their plants. When they they see me do the Chelsea chop they freak out and tell me i am crazy. But then they see the results and can't believe how the plants prosper. Loved following you through your stunning garden. Will look for more videos from you. Susan

I have 4 different kinds of epimediums and like them all. In NYS they are not cheap! And Cirsium rivulare…I have wanted that plant for several years and can’t find it in USA ☹️. If I ever travelled to Ireland, visiting Ratoath Garden Center would be #1 and then #2 would be Book of Kells. Thank you for another great video.

I managed to sprout a few Veronicastrum seeds this spring (it's not available as a plant here), and they are still tiny plants. Seeing John hack it down hurts. And John's into is what made me feel I have to have it!

As always an excellent lesson on how to keep our gardens in shape with or without the "chop". John, what is that exquisite tree or shrub with the layers of white flowers that was behind you as you completed your pruning? It's stunning! I'm wondering if it will grow in Zone 9 here in Sacramento, CA.

I've been threatening to Chelsea chop my tall yellow flowers since I heard John Lord mention this. I'm growing tall yellow flowers called rudbeckia laciniata 'Hortensia" in Belfast, Maine, USA. They grow to over six feet tall. We had to build a sort of cage for them because every year when they would flower, they would flop over--especially after a rain. It's so difficult to keep them propped up. Back in the day, these flowers were known, politely, as "outhouse flowers" because that's where they were often grown, around an outhouse because they could lean against the outhouse walls and stay propped up. Well, I Chelsea chopped my swath just about a week ago. They shouldn't grow anywhere near as tall now, and they should get bushier. Perhaps they'll stay within their enclosure now. This is an experiment in Chelsea chopping.

Brilliant as always. I have removed P. Polymorpha already……your previous remarks about this plant made me look again at it’s possible aggressive nature. Deep, thick spreading roots convinced me I did the right thing John. I will look again at Chelsea chopping more plants tomorrow…..I found last year I produced sturdier dahlias by cutting back the more vigorous ones in late May/early June.

I sit and drool at your lush borders, from Australia, but the thalictrum why chop off the flowers now? Was it to stop seedlings or reduce height for a plant that won’t fall over?

Thanks for the reminder to chop my several varieties of Solidago. Do you think that in Ireland, with as much rain as you say you usually get and the then cloudy skies, your garden is really not the equivalent of a full sun garden here in the Northeastern USA? Your videos are done in full sun and your plants are thriving. Would these same plants thrive in part sun here in much of the USA where we have very hot and dry summers, and as this year, dry Spring? We also cannot get many of the perennials you grow in your garden, except from specialty nurseries that require shipping of tiny plants☹️
