We Americans love the Brits, our greatest Ally, and their traditions. It's comforting to see the values of a beloved nation carry forward through the millennia.
Wear the furs that belong to the past. The animal died long before we were all born, leave that part of history and tradition alone 😊. Leave us something that is British
Here in Northwestern Ontario... we walk the trap lines, spend hours and days skinning and tanning if we catch a critter. Then weeks having someone cut/stitch. Not all fur is bad. Anyone who wears fur should have had to burn physical calories whether trapping or making soup for us when we come home cold. Honour the hunt, honour the animal.
@@user-ok9vv3do5d I am a vegetarian and I agree that existing garments should be worn. Else the animal died for nothing. Future garments and shoes can be made of alternate materials.
Mharifox I am living in Ontario for the last 40+ years. I did enjoy your comment. In 1987;December I came down with Pneumonia. I don’t smoke but have always had troubles with Respiratory issues. After I recovered someone said as I am outside a lot I should have a fur coat. I searched a lot and found a tiny company( sadly it’s closed now) and as it was getting into Spring I got a 3/4 length Coyote coat for a very good price. I wore that coat till it fell apart. It came with Certificate that gave me so much info, date of animals trapping etc. Then just before I stopped wearing it, I used to shop in a Consignment Shop and I found a beautiful 3/4 length Black Ranch Mink for a very good price. It was like new. I thought about it and then I bought it. I still wear it, even this past winter. The shopkeeper who sold it said the lady selling it was older and since her husband died she never wore it. Sadly my husband passed away, and every time I put on the coat, I think of the first owner. Bottom line, real fur is wonderful. Incidentally I still have to be careful with my respiratory system but my fur coat helps a lot. Sorry this is so long, but I agree with your comment. People in other areas do not understand how very cold it gets here in winter.
@@ruthbickerstaffe1915yes, when the weather is absolutely frigid a fur cost is the warmest. People in the far north continue to wear fur for practical reasons.
I can't believe people criticise pomp and ceremony it's fabulous - the clothes and robes are fabulous. the same people who criticise British Royal garments are the same ones who fight for some far away African tribe to have its artefacts back because they are 'historically and culturally important'. The coronation was beautiful - the clothing was significant and beautiful in its historical sense.
I agree with you completely. It's amazing to hear the history of a shop that has survived all of this time, I had no idea. I am English and love to see our Royal Family in all of their finery and in their carriages. I love their history and seeing them on the balcony at Buckingham Palace. It's just such a shame that there are only a few of them now compared to a balcony full of them when our beloved late Queen was alive. People are trying to erase our history bit by bit in this country, but I would definitely prefer to keep our Royal Family rater than become a republic any day. Hello to Neil and all of our chums around the world 👋👋👋
Absolutely fascinating story. The shop that goes back hundreds of years is still standing and functioning. Amazing when you think about it. Of course, there's nothing like that here in America, we're a little laid back for that kind of thing. Wonderful look onto Royal history. Thank you. Cheers!👋👋😁
Having grown up in the US, even though it may seem gruesome, I was thrilled when I toured old churches and a cemetary in Salzburg, Austria. The churches surrounding the cemetary (with a grave dating back to 300 AD) and the churches dated 100, 300 and 500 AD built into a mountain to hide them. (if I'm remembering correctly.).
AND YOU'RE ONLY A COUPLE OF HUNDRED YEARS OLD AREN'T YOU, NOT OVER A THOUSAND AS WE ARE, AND WE ARE EXTREMELY PROUD OF IT. SO I DON'T THINK THAT YOU HAVE SO LITTLE HISTORY BECAUSE YOU'RE "LAID BACK" OR ONLY HAVE PRESIDENTS. 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴
Prince George looks absolutely splendid! He's 'in the wings' as it were - waiting for history to sweep forward with the succession. - When I hear the word 'Queen' - I still automatically think of our late monarch. She was on the throne for most of my lifetime. History is kind to her. She was really remarkable.
I love our modern royals...."Make do and Mend" being the motto since before the war years, so recycling of all those magnificent garments that have been worn by such famous family before the most current user.
Fascinating video, Neil :-) I'm American but I've always been interested in the Royal Family. The fact that the company goes back centuries and is still making robes, etc. for the Royal Family is amazing.
King Charles … GRANT NEIL SEAN A ROYAL WARRANT ( or equal ) . One of the most supportive independent voices of the Royal Family , on the internet and RU-vid . He knows what he’s talking about !
While watching the coronation I did wonder who was responsible for the robes etc. and what a huge job it must have been. Thank you Neil, with your wonderful information I now know, a business still going after so many years. Great video.
That is nice that Queen Camilla doesn’t like wearing fur. She probably stopped going hunting a while ago too. Nice seeing the video showing Horse Guards, esp bit showing them being shod, by a trusted member of the Worshipful Company of Farriers!
I love learning about the rich history of tĥe monarchy. I have deep respect for the history of these robes and the people who have made them for hundreds of years. We need to protect our wonderful history, and I look forward to seeing the royal family wear these robes at future historic events. I hope we never lose these beautiful garments and the events that give us the opportunity to see the amazing garments. Thanks, Neil, for sharing this important history.
My ancestors were the Whitney blanket makers and I think they had a royal warrant. They closed down about two or three decades ago as the local area were no longer supporting enough merino sheep, and none of the younger family members wanted to carry the centuries old business on. I believe they presented the queen with a blanket every year.
I graduated from University College of North Wales Bangor in 1981, gown hired from Ede and Ravenscroft. I qualified with a second degree in 2014 from the Open Uni…guess where the gown was hired from.
Neil, thank you for meeting up with me every day!! I so appreciate you and your stories and all of our chums!! The majesty of centuries old businesses in the service of royalty - it is so fascinating and enthralling. Thank you for educating me!!
My late grandmother had a scrapbook with newspaper clippings from when the late queen and her sister were teenagers. The wedding og QEII and the birth of the children. And of course, the Royal tour to South Africa when we were still the Union of South Africa. And I have always loved the royal family. Love the history of the clothes and jewelry, etc. ❤️🌹🐝
What a wonderful story. Thank you Neil, you have amazing historical knowledge. It's important to keep the beautiful robes, they are a part of our heritage. Times were different when they were made.
Hello, Neil. Thank you so much for this episode on the royal robes! Im American but I love history and watched all of the coronation coverage because no one can do pageantry like Great Britain! You have the market cornered on majesty and it just gives me goosebumps. ❤
If clothing isn’t worn it is a waste. About 20 years ago I was gifted two fur coats that had been created in the 1950-60’s. When the weather is extremely cold those coats are a godsend. I was raised by parents and grandparents that believed “use it up, wear it out”.
It's all good and well not to want to wear furs going forward, but the robes are already there. The animals used for it don't come back to life if you stop wearing them. Make the change once necessity announces itself for a new one.
Good morning Neil, This is so fascinating, didn't know this about my own country's history, The people who work there must be so proud Knowing millions will be looking at their work, A thank you to them Thank you, take care stay safe
Edes and Ravenscroft make all the graduation robes I have had, and very good they were too. I didn't know they'd been going since the 16th century! This is why I love you and your channel Neil because I learn something new every day almost. ❤
This history is fascinating, thank you for this story. It isn't as if they are being made every year, it is something that is worn on special occasions...throwing it away would be a dreadful waste.
I love historical fiction books that are well written and let you immerse in the past, Scottish and English history with the kings and fighting over religion and the manners and rankings of the men. I was born in the wrong time period
Such a fascinating story, Neil !!! Absolutely wonderful that some traditions are still enduring after centuries! Living history! ❤ Thank you!! Goodness, 15 lbs of robe on HLMQE's petite frame 😮 It was lovely to see Princess Catherine on the archived footage ❣
Good day Neil I love English history and our royal family history…I do find it very sad this isn’t taught enough in our English schools, but it’s ok I tell them and continue to till the day I die 😁😁😁have a great day Neil
Mum loved Frankie Vaughn. I must have missed that video somehow, I'll have to look back when i hsve some spare time as there's a few short films I've missed too. Neil, you have some amazing stories and are a wealth of information. Thank you for the time and effort you put in to bring these to us. God bless the King, Catherine. Long live the King & future of the Monarchy
My daughters graduated from Edinburgh University and Ede and Ravenscroft supplied the gowns and hoods. Each university faculty wears a different coloured medieval style hood over the shoulders of the gown. We have our own Ede and Ravenscroft black academic gown which was worn by an Aunt in The early 1920 s. My husband and his sister both wore it to graduate from Edinburgh Uni in the 1970s and now my girls have done the same in the 2000s. It’s been cleaned and put away. Perhaps the next generation will use it.
I just the history of the UK. Growing up in the US especially on the west coast, old is buildings maybe build in the 20 and 30’s. In California they are big on tearing down such wonderful buildings and put up boring parking lot or office building.
Wonderful! We have all seen them and knew that someone made them but to hear the story behind them is satisfying. Thank you. Keep the history bits coming.
That is so cool Neil. Can anyone just go into that store? Besides the robes, what else do they make? Anything a mere mortal could buy? I doubt I could afford anything if not. I do love history. Of course, American children are not taught about things like that. I do love all the videos you share with us all. I started following the Royal Family when then Prince Charles & Lady Diana became engaged. When they said her birthday, I said that could have been me! Why? Because, I share the same birthday as Princess Diana, month, day, & year. I watched the wedding, followed the pregnancies & births of Prince William & PH, & the unfortunate end of their marriage. I continued to follow the family & I know where I was when the news of Diana’s death came across the tv screen. I cried for her boys. The funeral was hard for me to watch, but I did. I was recovering from a catastrophic medical mistake that almost took my life in May 1997. I was on an emotional roller coaster & still was very, very ill physically too. My only daughter is a year older than Prince William & my youngest son will be 40 in September like PH. I also have another son who is my oldest. A son-daughter-son. Also their wonderful spouses, & 9 grandchildren ages 18-5 years bless my life daily! Each one makes my life complete. A neat fact, I gave birth to my daughter on my & Diana’s birthday! Twenty(20) years apart, exactly. The nurses sang Happy Birthday, she ended up being my only daughter, & with my health issues, I cherish each birthday I have & my family!! Not afraid to become 63 years young in about 6 weeks from now. I had hoped that maybe Diana’s first born, Prince William, would be born on July 1st! My family tree, both maternal & paternal, goes back to Ireland They both immigrated to America due to the potato famine. I really hope to visit Ireland, Scotland, & Great Britain, see all there is to see & experience, sometime in the near future. Would love to see, at least, The Prince & Princess of Wales. Finally, of my three(3) granddaughters, two could put Princess in front of there names, Anne is 11 & Charlotte is 5!! My Anne is strong-minded, not afraid to speak her mind at 11. Then my Charlotte is the very youngest of the 9 g-kids, knows it, & has her Nana, me, wrapped around her finger!! Thank-you for letting me share. Prayers & Blessings from the States, specially Tennessee, near Nashville aka “Music City USA”!❤️🇺🇸❤️🇬🇧👑🏰🫶🏼🤴🏼👸🏻👦🏻👧🏻👦🏻🙏🏼⭐️✨💫
Really enjoyed that Neil. Thank you. My older sister loved Frankie Vaughan and I remember taking her to the Broadway Club near Oldham and we had a fantastic evening. Wonderful singer and entertainer. A very happy memory.
Neil, re furs, I think it depends on when you were born. I have a great picture of my mom coming home fr hospital wearing a full mink coat Dec 1948. It was snowing. Every Sunday in church I played with her fox fur with all those heads dangling. Fur is very warm but I wouldn’t wear one d/t public mocking. We were middle class, not grand at all. It’s not the same era. Didn’t Britain ban foxes on hunting trips? 🇺🇸👋
Thanks for that fascinating insight Neil such skills and talent passed on to different generations - the more you look the more you feel in awe of such skill - just wonderful history too .
