Welcome to I’ll Knit (& Spin!) If I want To! I asked y’all to send in some of your questions (from everything from fiber arts, to designing and on!) so I could put together a little video for y’all every Friday doing my best to answer your questions!
Sign up for my newsletter here: Sign up for the DRK Newsletter: eepurl.com/diPxsr
In this week’s episode we cover:
1. Are you ever like... this is a lot of sweaters for one person? No judgment just personally realizing my love of knitting sweaters is soon going to outpace my reasonable sweater-wearing capacity!
2. Lifted Increases: Hello there, I hope my question is a quickie! I came across a pattern that called for “Lifted Increases”(LLI and RLI). Can these be used interchangeably with M1L and M1R? Do you have a preference? Why would you use one or the other? Sorry, I thought it was a quickie.
3. Hi Andrea, I LOVE your designs! I discovered you through a friend who was knitting The Weekender, and seeing her in action re-ignited my love of knitting. Now after 10+ years away from it, I am embarking on my first Weekender sweater (and to be honest, my first sweater ever). It's been a fun way to dive back in and push beyond scarves & hats, plus warm up my fingers because... Your Tesselate Pullover is THE sweater turning me into a knitter! I am in love with it. But I'm also aware it's beyond my present skill level. So my question to you is this: what cowl or hat pattern would you recommend to an ambitious novice/beginner knitter to learn the skills necessary for the Tessellate? Should I knit The Shift cowl? Or is there something else you'd recommend? Apologies if you've tackled this question before.

4. I just finished knitting a rather epic cardigan, about knee length. How does one best approach blocking so much sweater? Where do you start? Where do you put the first pins? My mats do not have a grid so I am at the mercy of my tape measurer and wide clear plastic quilter’s rule. After a bit of a struggle, I think it is fine but I would appreciate your thoughts.
5 .Hi Andrea! I'm planning to knit your Evenfall sweater and having some trouble choosing colors. Can you explain a bit about choosing colors for 3-colored projects? Thanks alot!!
Today I am wearing Evenfall

I started my knitting journey with shawls, and I found I had so many, I didn't know what to do with them. After all, I only have one neck! So, I have given away probably 20 or more shawls to friends, and I love the joy they express at receiving one.

I thought the information on the increases was really great! I only want to say that the increases will really matter when doing stranded colorwork. I LOVE RLI and LLIs, and I substitute them whenever I can, but you have to beware when there's stranded colorwork: you don't want the colorwork to get messed up in the process of increases. That's when I do what the pattern says.

Hi Andrea! Thank you so much for answering my question about which project to try as practice for the Tesselated sweater. I can’t wait to cast-on the Rad Plaid cowl. I’m officially in my Knitting Era. Very best wishes to you!

I found myself with a superabundance of shawls a few years back, and too many of them were not getting air time. So at Christmas, I threw a party I called the Shawlapalooza and invited many friends and colleagues over to share treats and pick a "present" from under our tree. All the xmas boxes had individual shawls in them, so we did an amended version of a Yankee swap, where each person got to pick a present/shawl but they could swap with another willing recipient to get the colors/shape they liked. Aside from the fact that it got a little embarrassing to see just how MANY shawls there were, the event was a lot of fun, and everyone was a little warmer that winter. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that I am once again in shawlapalooza territory!

the other thing with lifted increases vs make1s is that you can't do a lifted increase every single row, at least not in the same space. because it's made IN an existing stitch, doing a lifted increase in the same space twice in a row literally doesn't work. the leg you have to use is occupied, and until you knit into it, a new leg won't be made available. it's like doing a slip stitch. you can't slip the same stitch into oblivion, you have to eventually knit into it as normal to "reset".

Glad that I watched this video earlier yesterday because in th evening I started a project that has M1Rs and M1Ls. I usually do lifted increases instead but this project has you doing increases every row so I'm actually doing as instructed

I use a large colander to drain some of the water out of my knits when I block. Sometimes I let a big sweater sit in the colander for as long as it sat in the bath, just to let gravity pull on just the water and not the knitted piece.

I've knit a couple of tops that used the M1L to increase in the yoke (NOT colorwork or textured) and I found that they were visible as tiny pinprick holes spaced every 5 stitches around the circumference of the stockinette fabric! I know M1's are considered invisible but the look really bugged me especially because some of the the rows are right around my bust. Maybe I'm the only one who would notice. I've been planning to substitute the LL1 in this situation in the future to see if I like the look better. I can't see that it will make a difference in the stitch count overall. Call me picky 😊 but I want to love my knits and I'm willing to frog to achieve that!

I have recently moved away from bulky knits (meant as outerwear) towards DK, sport, and fingering weight sweaters. But I never wear these lighter weight garments because I don't know how to handle the inevitable white residue of deodorant at the under arms. I am quite prepared to hand wash the sweaters from time to time but am frightened the residue will permanently damage and/or discolor the knitted fabric. What does everyone else do about this?
