I’ll Never Shoot Black and White Film Again, I Thought 

Young lady, I'm a 72-year-old man with 60 years of photography, and I would recommend color filters. Red, yellow, and orange. My two film cameras are, Nikon F2a and Hasselblad 503cx. The Hasselblad with four film backs will give me the opportunity to shoot B&W or color in one outing and that young lady keeps my happy.. GRINS Great work on this video. I actually mainly shoot black and white film. Everything we see is already in color. Black and white makes some images look like a dream. Your pictures are always incredible. Your portraits are my favorite of your pictures. 😊

I think the deal with bw photography is that it allows me to see beyond the surface, 'cause it doesn't have colors and textures to call my attention, so i'm able to see better the subject being represented.

That image of the older couple is award winning Sam. Seriously! To your point whether you should shoot black and white vs. color, you do great with both. Color presents possibilities, but color is only hues. Without the value scale you'd have nothing but flat images. You rocked this. Great images and great lessons here.

I almost exclusively shoot in black and white with my Mamiya 645. I enjoy how emotions are portrayed and conveyed in black and white photos, whether it’s a landscape, cityscape, or, most importantly, a portrait. It feels genuine and timeless to me. To shoot b&w is to see and pre-visualize in b&w, to see in your minds eye how your print is going to look in tone and composition.. B&W photography is a whole different mindset where done right the beauty is in the tones of gray where color would be Too much information. B&W allows the viewer to focus on the composition and subjects more intimately. It is an acquired skill to make powerful images in monochrome and that transfers over to color photography where you Then are conscious of what color will do to your composition. However I do believe that having knowledge of color theory will help your b&w, knowing how certain colors in the scene will translate into b&w like in your shot of the guy holding pizza boxes. Even though there are color filters you can use to change that tonal relation. For me I've shot and processed my own b&w since the mid 70s and I still prefer it. Unless the scene requires me to capture the color as part of the story I usually prefer capturing it in monochrome, sometimes I shoot both if I am not sure just to cover all my bases but I always "think" in b&w.

I mostly shoot black and white in the winter months as it looks better imo during that time. Especially living in New York, the winters out here has a bleaker look outside and color doesn't look as good to me.

one other tip Sam, cloudy days are your FRIEND in MF in this format all lenses are telephoto as compare the 35mm format cousins, and as such are Way more sensitive to glare, flare and motion blur, so cloudy days are natures natural softbox , diffusing the light and reducing contrast, keeping highlight tones in zone 9 where we can see them, and not blow out.

Sometimes when I look at black and white images my mind fills it in with color. It gets kind of trippy.

Hi Sam. I usually carry two bodies that share lenses (a Nikon FE2 and F 100 or a Flex and a Cord in my case). One for color and the other for B&W. It was confusing at first but I found that looking for colors OR lines and curves sorted out which to shoot. Something else that helped me was to have a cheat sheet on what I want to find during the day. I call it Abstract Editorial (la-de-da right?) and give myself bonus points if someone else can work out what I was trying to capture. Buying bulk 35mm B&W film so that you can tailor how many shots to a roll also helps to keep you from spreading a roll over two or six outings. Thanks for your work- a random mike

hey Sam, one solution, if you shoot with a hasselblad, bronica, or Mamiya RB\RZ camera you can change the film Magasine, so you can shoot BOTH and switch between colour & B&W stocks MID shoot!! how cool ! your Pentax is a 135 format style slr so once you load up, you Must finish before you change, this is one disadvantage of this style of camera.

I always bring a small point and shoot with the opposite film of what I’m shooting with. I used to shoot a lot of bw and so my point and shoot would have color. Love your art and channel🙌🏾🤗

also the cloudy day allows one to utilise the shallow dof the mf lens and format provides, so you can open up, and use the f 3.5 or f 2.8 on them, so adding extra subject separation, bokeh, etc. which a hard light of EV 15+ wouldn't allow.

To decide on whether certain colour shots are good photographs, I'll desaturate the scanned negatives - and see the composition in bnw I shoot a lot of bnw. It can be so powerful

at 13:50 what is happening is you are what Ansel Adams called "pre-visualising", seeing what you want in the print, and being B&W adapted this 'sight' sees how you want to view the scene in mono, so you know intuitively what will work.

I have been shooting since 1970 and have always shot a mix of B/W, C-41 and slide film. Color calls attention to itself becasue of the color while B/W is more about contrast and shapes. There are images that work in either but there are just as many that are either B/W or color but not both. That is why I like my Hasselblad 500 series cameras and my Mamiya RB67, they have interchangeable backs. That way I always the right film with me for the image I'm shooting. One back with color and one back with B/W.

Keep it up. monochrome takes time to learn. Keep at it you will appreciate it over time. It took me a while. For your next challenge, try shooting slide film. Do NOT overexpose. For more saturation 1/3 underexposure at best. Over exposure flattens it out and makes it look bland. Your exposure has to be dead on. Good luck and keep up the good work. Bnw for film is my favorite and just color on digital. However I’ve been eyeing a bnw sensor camera

Great photos in B&W. There are so many that I like. I also like color photography but I hope you do more black and white.

I find myself shooting more B&W these days. I used to only use it to test cameras / lenses as it is easier and faster to develop (I use a monobath for B&W.) It seems the reason why I am shooting more of it now is because I feel more accomplished if I have a couple good shots per roll. With color film I easily get a lot of "keepers" whereas with B&W I do not, so when I actually take a B&W pic that doesn't suck - it feels more special. Lol.

Look at yourself in your bw video! The contrast between your dark hair and pale smooth skin attracts my view and also the eyes and the lips gain attention. I think in color it would look more “average”. ❤🎉 Great video. 👏

I like to alternate 2 rolls of color then 1 roll of black and white. I have been shooting that ratio for a while now and it gives me a sense of appreciation for both! nice shots here BTW!

Very interesting. I have been shooting B/W since the 70s and after attending a workshop years ago learning the Zone system I can say it totaly changed everything. You get so much more out of B/W film if yuu know that system and how to develop films. Just look at Ansel Adams pictures then you will know what I am talking about. Good luck and keep it going.

I really enjoyed the contemplative story you told through your 10 rolls of black and white film! Although what's your editing process for film like? One reason I really like black and white film is because I can make much more extreme edits to a photo and have it still look "real". Did you experience this?

Really, very interesting topic and some shots are very nice (12:38 for sure :)). My wife who never shot on film accepted my proposal to take super easy Minolta 303si to her travel to the Amsterdam. I gave her one roll of Ilford Delta 100 and two rolls of Kodak Ultramax 400. As a result, she liked more B&W photos. Peolpe, shadows, details, even landscape photos of Amsterdam in B&W looks more interesting. It's true, color sometimes can distracts. That is why I have two cameras, one for color and the other one is for B&W and sometimes do two pictures. Also, B&W rolls you can push. Color negatives are less flexible.

Sounds like you like color. No need to shoot B&W. I like both but feel it is easier to develop and scan B&W than color.

Ive been shooting color only this year and im not having as much fun shooting and developing compared to b+w

BW is the easiest film to shoot and make look good....its also the cheapest. You can buy BW 35mm film in 100 feet rolls and roll it yourself into canisters.
