I 3D Scanned my car into BeamNG 

I'm glad you and your kid are able to use my videos to learn. I stopped making my videos so focused on the step by step, so if you want that I did make a dedicated modding video a few months ago. And before that you'll have to go back to the bolide engine in the piccolina

As a beamng fan, an awesome place to start with modding and vehicle related stuff is exporting cars from automation (which can be found on steam) into beamng, ive done this at least 1000 times now.

as with all things I do, feel free to take it and do what you want with it :) as for turning it into a real mod? it'd only really work as a base to make a real model off of... so it only really does like 1% of the work :/

IIRC modern forza games use 3d scanning

haha the quality of scan isn't really there for me to make a full series, because most people would rather me just make good mods :P but we'll see

@@fillman86 yes your mods are amazing not just good, but I think all of your regular viewers are more drawn to your personality, your hard work does shine through and make the videos have an overall outcome but remember this when you need a break and the youtube grind is getting ontop of you not ever video needs a pitch perfect outcome. I think we all watch who we watch because we would interact/ want the certain RU-vidrs as a part of our social life and seeing someone thrive and enjoy is way better than just a idea perfected, but like I said dude keep up the insane work and look after yourself dude

well there are some android phones with lidar scanners, but most of them are old now I also agree that photogrammetry sucks :/

The Note 10+ has a 3d scanner.

I'd not heard of nerf before, it looks really cool, but I doubt it'd do well with cars unless you were to cover the whole thing in some kind of powder that you'll be washing out of nooks and cranys for the rest of time haha

yeah, that's the limitations of the tech in the phone, if I had weeks, I'd totally go over and model over it as a reference :)

@@fillman86 Back when I used to do this professionally, we would (mainly) scan industrial machines with a matte protective coat (paint). It was slightly reflective, but for us it was easier to just "fix it in post". However, I remember back then we had to put small tracking dots and the equipment was very expensive (I don't know exactly, I know the insurance papers stated it goes for ~33k$ though). Also, we were forced to do scans in pieces of 20x20x20cm, which would then be joined in post. I think this was done for resolution purposes, but I also think that if you try scanning for example only the back of the car, then the front, you might get better results. Also might be worth scanning it with the doors/hoods open to get those "models" for "free" I also remember that the equipment had a special mode which would analyse the scene lighting and tell you if it's optimal or not. The iPhone apps didn't have anything like this, we only used those for scanning small objects for which they were quite good

@@fillman86 Oh yes and the first step after importing was to use the supplied software to decimate & re-topo the model. Just a basic decimate step in Blender will be really helpful. Also, *forget* about using the model in-game unless you're making some background prop or if you have "infinite" performance budget (like for an animated movie). Even after decimation the models were then handed off to a CAD professional who would use it as a template and remake everything including textures (though he would use parts of the scanned texture for logos for example). I wasn't involved in those steps but it was explained to me that UV mapping is a nightmare with the generated models and it's easier and faster to remake them by hand. The models that came out of the 3d scans were used for measuring and testing, and the hand remade CAD models were used for simulations. The iPhone scans were only used as background props for propagation materials.

I'll let you in on a secret, my phone was failing and my mum bought me a new phone for my birthday because she felt like it haha the car was about $18k aud, and the single most expensive thing I've ever done, and with how slow it was, I have buyer's remorse, but it's also a functional tool. You're right though, $5 for a map isn't much, but I also don't particularly care about what map I use

yeah some samsungs did come with lidar scanners too, but they weren't supported as well, because it was never a big feature for android

it's odd being in the torque dip, because it runs out like a diesel, then you start to get hit by more power, and you're like "oh yeah, vtec bb.... wait, that's it?" A good way of saying it is, "it has a really bad low end, then a tiny splooge of power at the top" as for handling, I feel I've been spoiled by good cars, so coming to this platform didn't live up to them

the only thing that matters is the handling and lack of power characteristics :)

have you used a polarizing filter before? They need to be adjusted for each angle, not to mention that it would probably interfere with the lidar

@@fillman86 didn’t consider it interfering with lidar. But I presume it used the lidar for the shape and then the camera for “color it in” so you could possibly get away with a real small filter that only covers the camera but not the lidar sensor. As for the filter needing adjustment. Some you can rotate to adjust the amount of light blocking, but others are fixed once the threads are tight. So it shouldn’t move much after that. But if you do try this, and your filter isn’t fixed. Perhaps a sharpie line can help you keep it dialed in👍

90% of that would be 3D modelling and there's not many successful 3D modelling entertainment videos out there, only tutorials, and tutorials don't do well on my channel anymore

I used an iphone with lidar, I tried both polycam and scaniverse, and put it into beamng as is (after removing the ground). TBH you should really only use the scan as a template to model from the ground up

@@GenGamers just because its a subaru inspired car doesn't mean it would be the most appropriate. If i was making a ford fiesta, I would use the Covet as my base vehicle instead of the grand marshal. It's closer to what I need compared to what is the closest car. besides, he did use the sbr4 engine so some subaru shenanigans.

@@GewelReal in some places you can look up plates and get a lot of identifying information. Though this practice has been stopped in most places around the world

if you live in a place where it's legally easy to turbo it, or engine swap it, then it's only overpriced, as opposed to being overpriced, mid, and super slow and lifeless haha

Headers and a tune are mandatory imo

@@fillman86i have a ‘17 BRZ w/ the “performance package” which really just includes brembos, some surprisingly decent sway bars, etc - still massively slow in a straight line (i get gapped by a chevy cruze) but since i live in the canyons in the desert it’s proven itself to be very good fun on the tight canyon roads if you really push it. however i will definitely be adding some power soon because it is very slow trying to gain speed in a straight line lol.

@@brzo. not yet, i picked it up earlier this year and i’ve had some other pretty large unexpected expenses but that’s definitely on the wishlist - i know the 2nd gens are going for about $31k USD on average but if you can find one cheaper i say do it. you can definitely make them quick and the power/weight ratio is honestly good. i love the car especially on tight windy roads, but it seems most americans only care about speed in a straight line lol. good luck man! hope you get your hands on one, i say it’s definitely worth it. plus mod support is one of the best out there right now

@@fillman86 all Pandas were tiny city cars also to thrash? I mean I had a 50bhp Panda and it was the worst and scariest car I had ever driven. No power (over 15 seconds 0-100kph) and wheels so thin it had literally no grip. Very dangerous to drive. Now I have a new Panda with 70bhp and much wider wheels. It grips at 50kph where old one slid at 30. Also ventilated front discs help as Panda has horrible brake fade without them. There was also a 100bhp Panda and THAT is super fun (very expensive cars tho, still over 5000 euros for a used one) and you could turbo one quite easily The 70bhp one does roll around nicely as it's just 850kg. But it's tall. Sways a lot on turns.

haha I talked to my accountant, and I had to make the video before the end of the financial year, and log how much I used it.... I never did either of those, so I screwed myself with laziness haha

I'd get a turbo for this car in a split second, but to insure it would cost me the price to build an enclosed garage, and $2600 a year in insurance!! haha

actually one of the scanners did give a point-cloud view and it looked amazing, but it's not usable outside of their app :(

sadly not yet, i imagine in the future AI could create PBR textures based only on the reference video and how light interacts with it @@fillman86
