Home Depot has it highlighted in store as of now as $29.97, but recently reduced from $39.97. That makes Home Depot currently in line with Amazon prices. I remember when I grabbed Leatherman wingman's for $25 on clearance from Menards when they got rid of all their leatherman's and replaced them with Gerber's a few years back. It's sad to see how much everything has inflated.
In the case of the Wingman/Sidekick, I think Leatherman raised the prices to make room for its other lower-tier pocket tools. Sad though, US$35-40 for the Wingman/Sidekick is fair for the toolset and the fit and finish but certainly not US$65+ as it is now.
@@maurolorenzotongco5521 I bought wingman and sidekick from Home Depot during the holiday sales years ago for $25 (around that price). I just never really liked them that much. I bought a Rebar around the same time for $50. I love the rebar.
@@DamionJR4923 hey man, I miss those days when the Rebar went for sub US$70 :) I had both a Rebar (knifeless version with scissors) and a Wingman and i agree that the Rebar was the more useful tool but I definitely enjoyed carrying my Wingman too 😎
The tool that I got also has the tools accessed from the outside at least most of them. You do have to open it to get to the other ones but the main ones that people use are accessible on the outside
Ya the knife is not great, interesting about the pliers. Obviously I mine didn’t, and why I wanted to do testing with it, but that is also why I emphasized light duty use. 👍
@maxlvledc in your opinion is it better to go this route with a more proven name like Gerber or 1 of the many wave clones ? Maybe a idea for an video? I know a few of these as well as a multiforce .
I have a bibury 19-1 and a gerber suspension nxt mutitool and am happy with both. I also share the criticism of the knife at gerber. Always have one of the two in my pocket
For me the pliers are really good. And just because a few people said it was broken, that doesn't count for me. Who knows what they used the tongs for. It's not a bolt cutter. with the wrong use I break every pair of pliers
This tool is for light to medium use...it is good if you are out & about on a light day with a dedicated folder...I can give my Leatherman REV a break....😊 Well, if you are hungry & you run into a cache of canned goods, it is better to have an opener rather than just sitting there looking at it...😊 Good review!🎉
Good review. I'm actually looking for a budget yet full size multi tool for my travels. It does make a difference if the customs officer or police confiscate your 45 or 120 dollar multi tool maybe just because they feel like it. This might be the right tool for this. Btw. You did use the can opener the wrong way. It's supposed to go in a forward motion and not backwards.
Such a good multitool that I bought two for our car emergency kits. I used it as a EDC and it performed exceptionally well but found it a bit bulky in the pocket so into the kit it went. I now have the Leatherman Wingman as an EDC.
My very first edc multitool. Ive had it about 4 years. I have several tools now and this has the best on tool phillips driver. Its so good im trying to fit it into my mp600.
I am using this as a backup. I converted 3D philips into bit holder with magnetic holder (square-hex adapter with magnet). Some poxipol and it work as a dream ❤️ Cons: - knife - should have better grind for this size - scissors - needed some work on them to cut paracord for example. What is good? - can opener - for me is the most wanted tool in multitool - cutters can cut 3mm nail 🙆♂️ (I do a test for myself) - locking mechanism is easy to operate - 3D philips
I removed the blade on mine and filled in the gap with washers. I also dulled the awl a little just to be safe. It is now my TSA compliant multi-tool. I’ve only been through two airports with it but made it through both checkpoints. They did have to inspect it in Indy but I got a quick thumbs up. I’ll probably mod it some more in the future to add more capability.
Good review! I keep one in my desk at work and another in a kit. I’ve kept one in my my pickup for things like opening packages and such, and it was great for that. They have always passed the coat hanger test with ease for me. I agree with your criticisms, and agree that it’s best to use one of these for lighter duty.
The Victorinox Hiker, Tinker and Super Tinker all are around that price point and have a 3d Phillips. I think the cheapest in line 3d Philips can be found on the Explorer.
Nice, I should have been clearer, I meant that they are cork screw in design, coming half way up the handle and not giving much reach. This tool, had it out the end with a lot better ergos and reach. 👍
Hi from the UK. Wish we had your prices. These tools currently go for around the equivalent of $78 on this side of the pond. I have a few Leatherman tools but they cost so much I am almost scared to use them. I found the Nextool range a cheaper option and they do all that I require from them.
I have been carrying one of these Suspension NXT's on a daily basis for about 10 months and I'm pretty convinced that it's the best bang for the buck out there. I have other Gerber's and a few Leatherman's and this seems to be the best overall in terms of price, form and function. Perfect for pocket carry due to the light weight and the large clip. My only major criticism is that it will occasionally open up in my pocket. It can be annoying but it's not a deal breaker. A locking mechanism would be a very useful addition. If I could also just add one tool, it would be a saw blade but it's not important.
I was browsing Amazon a month ago and saw Gerber had a sale for their MP600 for $55.84. I couldn't believe the price at they'd normally go for much more. If I didn't get the MP600, I'd probably bought the suspension. Thanks for the video. Greetings from the tiny Pacific Islands of Palau.
I carry one in a mag pouch/belt carry during summer. Can opener & scissors are good to have, that's what usually gets asked to burrow most. I wished the awl had a threading eye for repairs. It's a good tool.
I have the other version of the Gerber Suspension. Mine came with a sheath. Though I think the newer version seems better. Mine costed the same, was $30. Had mine for sometime now.
Got one as a gift and it’s my go to (especially as a beater tool) tbh. Had a Gerber MP600 I can’t stand the little clips, they kept coming loose and falling off.
Very good tool. Medium duty but works well. Heavy duty MP600 . Tip. Put thread locker in the screws to secure. I have three the NXT the truss and the MP600 . My next step is the center drive. Saludos Amigo
I picked up a pair from Target someone had returned several years ago for less than $12. I keep them in my car, something I wouldn't miss terribly if it were to get stolen.
Really NXT would be my hands- down favorite if they ditched the useless file for a saw blade. The Truss has it but in a larger frame and no pocket clip. Saw blade for me useful for notching, shredding kindling, etc. can’t afford Leatherman.
Nice review most people (the Leatherman group) turn their nose up about anything that has Gerber on it. One thing that you can add is a Gerber Bit Kit. The Bit Kit gives you a lot standard 1/4” bits.
I have this and the Leatherman Wave. I honestly like this better. The only negative of it for me is the knife, which is on par with the cheapest multi tools. Everything else tho is top notch. Probably has the best multitool scissors.
Any $10 multitool would be ultimately useful, but that's one area where I do have a minimum that I won't go below. I'd say $30 is an ideal starting point. I have a Leatherman Surge 2nd Edition that I paid about $70 for. I can't believe what they're selling for now. Worth it? They are the best, but $130 for a MT is steep. That's basically a legit tool set (tool box, pliers, knife, hammer, screwdriver set, wire cutters, etc...).
i have had two of these. I still use it for work everyday. But I am searching! In order to take out the tools you need to use your finger nails. It becomes annoying when your in a hurry or you have short finger nails. Also if they get dirty, the tools are harder to take out. The first one broke using the flat head.
This is hilarious to me. I bought one of these about two years ago and it was my start into she EDC world and led me to a lot of forums and subreddits. I’m not a fan of the screwdriver on it. It’s the one multi tool I’m trying to replace since I lost it over this past New Years weekend
I picked up the suspension NXT at home depot a few months ago. Much like beer, I've never met a multi tool I didn't like. The NXT is no exception. It looks like it should be flimsy, but it isn't. I can squeeze the crap out of the pliers and the handles hardly flex. A lot of people complained about the "splay" of the handles, but it doesn't bother me. I can get a good grip. My hands aren't that big. I would have preferred a plain edge blade. I never cared for combination blades. I could do without the can opener/bottle opener. Maybe 40 or 50 years ago it would have been a useful feature. I can't remember the last time I needed a bottle opener and most canned food has perforated lids anymore. Mine also has a loose philips bit. I tried tightening the torx screw. I spent a half hour with a soldering iron trying to heat up any loctite. I ended up stripping the head on the screw.
I have one of these and it really kinda sucks. It's big for what it is and you can just tell how they cut costs in materials. I've had a wingman for a few years now and I can't believe they're charging $80 for it now. It was $35 like, 6 years ago? I have one of the bibury Amazon tools too and that thing is better build quality than the Gerber. It's wild how some companies have taken the inflation excuse to a level of price gouging.
🤔 umm Gerber... Not so sure for a painter, last Gerber i used got to the point it was almost impossible to deploy the tools due to the locking mechanism getting full of paint, dust and other such debris. Thanks for the video 👍
I have one of these. BTW I’m sure you’re going the wrong way with the can opener. The cutting edge is on the front. You must have struggled going in reverse :)
I've got one of the original Gerber Multi-tools. I can open the pliers, full size, with one hand. I carry it every day. I do not like the ones with needle nose pliers.
Tip: Use the serrated blade as much as possible, and especially cutting cardboard because it can dull the non-serrated blade very quickly. That way, you'll save your non-serrated blade for crucial work.
I have a love heat relationship with leatherman they keep pushing customization which I don’t care about but they make great tools I just wish you could get the premium blades in the wave. Also you are right about pour over
I broke one of these cutting chicken wire, the jaws literally just snapped in half.. would spend the money on a leatherman if you intend to use the pliers or cutters for anything more than light use
Have you checked out the SOG Altair fx (fixed blade version)? Is it a buy if you can get past the sheath? Long time watcher. Thanks for all your hard work over the years!
It's a good pocket knife with additional tools but as a overall multitool for technical use, it is a bit lacking. Roxon is a much better suited budget multitool or even Ganzo's line of multitools
as a knife collector, i can't really justify this over when leatherman rev sidekick wingman were around this price in the past sometimes even cheaper. however, i am very curious in today's market
'Course you come out with this video right after I broke down and bought the Curl. Oh well, I'm sure I'll get plenty of use out of it anyway - gotta love US made goods
@@gideonstactical four times the price, it better be! Haha but really, I use my multitool most days on the job, so I figured the heavier duty Leatherman would do me better
G'day Aaron, I'm sure I've mentioned before, I'm a Ranger 78, together with a smaller pair of linesman's pliers, guy, (away from the home workshop and vehicle toolbox anyway), ..... however; not bad for a light duty, and light on the wallet, model; it did do some decent work there. FYI; a mate picked up something similar, in fairness, with only a couple of locking tools, but with no discernible play, (as new), in the 5 AUD, (around 3 or 4 bucks USD), bin at a local chain camping store. Time will tell, but having handled and used it, admittedly only briefly, I reckon its on par with some @ many, many, times the price, (but no ...... sadly ...... not equivalent to Leatherman, lol). Incidentally, this particular item was not branded at all, could have come from anywhere/factory. Bottom line; like everything, there's an art to rewarding "budget buys". I reckon the main thing is to see and touch in store, or indeed be referred by a mate, perhaps an experienced and trustworthy reviewer ......... ; ) Certainly, not a solid strategy purely via Amazon spiel and the like. No, a can opener is not mandatory in the field IMO, if you do carry tins at all, (I do actually on occasion), but I'm surprised you found one without a ring pull. And yes they do break off sometimes and yes the Ranger 78 does happen to have a can, and bottle, opener, but plenty of other ways of opening both without a dedicated tool. So, if you've got one anyway, well and good, otherwise no great drama. Cheers Duke.
I used their warranty before they knew i existed and I always do warranty with out letting companies know who I am so that I can see how they treat everyone 👍
@@gideonstactical I have to say the price is really stable. I got mine for just US$26.20 in 2018 and I'm still rocking it. Using a Maxpedition Entity Small Utility pouch for it since the clip on mine isn't usable (spring tension isn't enough) 😝 It's my go-to MT 90% of the time cause it's so lightweight and the tools are very usable. There's a black oxide (BO) version of the NXT and I hope the fit and finish is similar to the BO MP600s.
Me too, but you will 4x the price for one of those. Some people just don’t have that kind of money or are looking for a second backup tool to throw in a go bag or car. This is a good option for the money from my experience 👍
Let's talk about handle side play, and how it chews up the fine edge of the combo blade... after few weeks. The edge so strange you can't use your fixed angle sharpener. I will never buy a non USA Gerber again...
Believe it or not I found a Leatherman quality multi-tool. On temu, for about $26 I bought two of them I beat the shit out of the one that I use and it still holds up its Leatherman quality just not at the Leatherman price. It's even got a pocket clip
