I added rock drums to pop songs by Billie Eilish, BTS, and more...but did I make them better?

Basically every single pop song out there has programmed drums at the moment, but what happens when I add rock drums to songs like "Bad Guy" by Billie Eilish, or "Dynamite" by BTS? Well, I think these pop songs start to sound a lot better! There's nothing like having a real drummer recording on a track so you can get more power and life from the overall song! I am a rock drummer, so it's time to add some rock drums to these pop songs!

Really the issue is one or two people write the songs, and melody is king. The people writing songs generally have no percussion background. A drummer can still write a sick electronic beat, but they aren't given the chance

@@austinsmith5593 Idk if it's even that, it's more a laziness/money thing. Sure they could spend a day or two in a studio spending a thousand or more dollars to get a great real live drum sound, or they could program drums in 10 minutes and be done with it. Or they could send a whole album's worth of songs to one drum programmer and he could have the whole thing done without having to source instruments and change heads and fuss with microphone placement and all this.

this video is, as I see it, to inform us of live gigging situations, and how you should play to appropriately fit those situations. Honestly all the recorded versions of these songs, should not need these acoustic drums. There's a time and place for everything. This is telling us how to play live, in which most big artists that do live stuff have incredibly exceptional drummers already that know this all too well! For example, Aaron Spears touring with Ariana Grande or Carlin White playing for J Cole, both amazing instances of great drummers playing well live!

Proper don't realize how much they're actually missing on every single level of music, hiding behind building layer Dynamics and musical interest truth samples, auto-tune and quantization. Not to mention the cookie cutter song structure and lack of artistic voice in song writing.

Playfulness is a really good point, actually. most pop songs are poppy, as they are basically designed to be catchy and playful mood enhancers. Opening up the drums adds another level of dynamic and playful energy to the songs, which they really benefit from.

I'm in a cover band, and we do this thing almost constantly across all genres of music. Those tricks are in every genre, not just pop. And when you only have 4 guys you have to make adjustments to get the desired effects live even though it isn't exactly how it's played on the album. We only play a couple original songs live and even those are not played verbatim to the recording. I think the underlying message is just because an album is one way doesn't mean it HAS to be done that way live. In fact changing it live will probably improve the live performance. Here's an example, we do a cover of the Journey song Open Arms, and there's no ride cymbal only hi-hat. That's INSANE to me, for that big of a ballad to just have the little "tick tick" of a closed hat. Just switching that to a ride cymbal instead opens the whole song up, because we don't have layers and layers of vocal "ooohs" and guitar overdubs and keyboard synths n stuff, like I said, we have 4 dudes. Piano Guitar Bass Drums and Vocals. Making that one small change helps fill in the sound and make it "sway" like it should rather than being all stiff.

Adding rock drums to most of these songs definitely improved them. It would be nice to see pop music incorporate more of that in the actual recordings. That said, I do think Bad Guy is the one that did not benefit from the rock drums. What gives that song character is the monotony and robotic feel. So, I think you would have to reimagine the whole song to make rock drums work for it. Nice work otherwise!

Tottally agree with Aaron - I think it does change Bad Guy away from that almost robotic, techno sound. It's very good with the drums, but I think it's not what Billie and Fineas intended (I suspect they could have brought in a live drummer if they wanted.) Btw, there is an actual versionof BTS Dynamite performed witha live band , including drummer, on their NPR Tiny Desk concert.

This is awesome. The big difference between recordings and live shows is that the listener controls the volume knob on a recording. This means you can't guarantee that they'll be belting it out on good speakers and be wanting it to be big and loud. If you put these parts on the originals, it might grate against the ear when people are looking for soft background music. Or just add noise to the recording when it's played at low volume. But when you're cranking it out at a gig and everyone is going crazy, this is perfect. Not saying that this type of drumming never works on recordings either, just that there is a better case for playing something bigger and more involved. And this isn't even touching on his point about how not all the parts will be played live so each player needs to step up to fill the gaps.
@sylvernale

I agree. We can't judge studio recordings by what we think sounds better when actively listening for drums in a recording where the drums are the loudest sound. I think this video sounds dope but there are reasons beyond laziness why they use sequenced drums

Takeaway was best for me. Love how you keep the feel and leave air in the grooves. The least effective for me was the Billie song. Her sound is all about SUPER spare arrangements: mushy bass and snaps + her moaning voice. The busy (more energetic) drumming killed the vibe. All that being said - you are a freaking beast of a player. Enjoyed and inspired!

Good video! This touches on what I generally find with software instruments: they sound OK in a pure electronic mix, on headphones. Say in a practise room, or small gig, the software synths disappears. It’s to do with audio transients and software synths tend to have weak ones. I suspect it’s due to how digital audio expresses max signal levels vs analogue and acoustic instruments. Drums have loads of transients and is great to add energy and dynamics to a track.

I see what you’re going for, however I think that in some of the cases adding too many extra fills detracts from everything else that’s going on so you cannot hear the interplay of the other musical elements. I agree, you can add more dynamics to pop songs when played live, however adding the fills fundamentally changes the groove. IE busier isn’t necessarily more dynamic. I think more subtle changes would have a greater effect without fundamentally changing the groove and flow of the song. I think you’re a fantastic drummer, and I am enjoying your playing I just have a difference of opinion.

There's a lot of great pop music out there. Billie Eilish is really fresh and exciting, Mitski uses some really unusual chord sequences while still being catchy. James Blake and Frank Ocean have put out some sonically interesting music and write beautiful melodies, Silk Sonic (and both Bruno and Anderson are great individually). You just need to remember that the focus of pop music has changed over the years, as it always has. Rhythm, Production and Texture are more of a focus than they were previously, but there's still a lot of fundamentally great songs out there.

I gotta say you got them skills as far as playing, but the parts you added weren’t written around the song you were playing. You just overplayed without hitting accents where they should be if you were truly making these songs better. Again good playing but there’s a huge difference in overplaying and adding parts that truly accent and embellish the song.

Also keep in mind, the only people paying attention to the drums when they listen to these songs, are usually non existent or are drummers themselves. This is something I’ve had to learn over the years of writing and being a drummer myself. Just cause it sounded good and was on time etc doesn’t mean it was actually good for the song.

Also just a fun fact, the older heads in my life have complimented me more on what I wasn’t playing, rather than what I was playing. The less the better, and when you do something flashy or more complex it has more impact and ear grabbing as you aren’t over doing it.

Great example of how to adapt as a drummer when you don't have the same arrangement as the original track! I find myself trying to interpret a lot of synth/e-drum parts when I play pop-worship songs at my church. You've given me some new ideas to try out! Thanks for sharing your interpretations and perspective on this topic. Love that you provided multiple takes on each song to show all the possibilities there are!

You are so right, every organic variation you demo’d was just so much more alive and musical. Excellent. Unfortunately because I do not play the drums sufficiently to lay down the tracks on my songs, I have to use the electronic beats and just add fills and mix patterns in order to make it sound organic and live.

As a songwriter who is trying my hand at producing my music this was super super helpful!! I grew up on classic rock but love the limitless possibilities digital producing gives you and have always wanted to merge the two in my own music. My weakness in producing is drums and you gave me so much to think about, I can’t thank you enough!!

The takeaway song I’ve been interested in learning for awhile but have had trouble in that first part of the choruses before the high-hats came in. I personally think that song benefited the most from changing things up.
