I was a truck driver. Came in off the road. Wanted to relax. Backed my pick up into the back yard to hook up the boat. It was gone.Wife sold it. Said it sits for a month at a time. Told her So do you! Got rid of the wife and got a new boat.! Living happily ever after !!!

You did an amazing job. I have been building boats for the last 3 years and have always been around boats and fishing since I was 5. I can relate with you on a lot of this. Built 4 boats already. However be careful because it's addicting and frustrating... A year ago I gave up at one point and found myself at Cabela's dropping 30k on a bass boat... Amen to the wives that let us do these things. We own 5 boats and I want more LOL

Hey Robert and thanks for the comment. Man I tell ya I had studied long and hard on how to do this and originally thought of Aluminum. Hey K Selby, Thank you for your comment for sure. When I built this Jon Boat out I knew there would be a lot of time to finish this project the way I wanted it. I watched a lot of videos to give me ideas but nothing really popped out at me. I didn't want to bore a bunch of people with cutting wood and painting so I got all of the work out of the way and did the video to keep the attention of viewers. Did you ever take this boat to the lake? I was wondering how stable it was on the water??
@take2fishing
@take2fishing 4 года назад
Hey JoeJoe. As a matter of fact I have 3 times. The first was a float and Motor test and it ran about 18 MPH on a 20 HP Outboard. I got back to the ramp and pulled the plug and no water. 2nd trip was a Stability test to see how the front deck and rear decks did with me standing and to use ONLY the trolling Motor. Perfect. Last trip was to fish from the front and rear decks and I did but only for about 30 min and to adjust the rails on the trailer. I intend to do a on the Water video as soon as my Brand New Laptop gets back to me from taking a dump😕 Anyway I will be posting a Video soon and thanks for asking.

How has the plywood lasted?
@take2fishing
@take2fishing 4 года назад
Hey Andre, So Far so good. My only true complaints is the piece of wood up front that has the trolling Motor on it. I do believe it should have been a 3/4" because it sees a lot of foot traffic. Plus the torque from a 45lb thrust trolling Motor. I do think I will change it out before to long. Thanks for the question.

How did you do the cardboard? Laid it on top and traced under, the cut out with scissors?
@take2fishing
@take2fishing 5 лет назад
So I used boxes that were thick and used duck tape as needed to hold pieces together. I laid it out on the frame and used a marker to draw it out. Trimming as needed. If I over cut the cardboard I simply used a marker and placed an X and I knew to correct the problem when I transfered to wood. Before cutting on the wood. I used a razor knife to cut the cardboard as needed. Hope this helps and let me know if I can help further.

Hey what's up big guy. I'm actually trying to mimic the exact interior and exterior on my 12 Landau. My question is how should I go about sanding and painting my 4 coats also what's your opinion on the best trailer for my 12ft. Thanks and remember tight lines and sharp hooks 🎣🎣🎣✌🏽
@take2fishing
@take2fishing 4 года назад
Hey Victor Davis and Great questions. I took my Jon Boat down to bare aluminum. Next I myself used a Primer that could be sanded after each coat. As long as I didn't feel a rough spot after sanding I was happy. Next I used my choice of spray gloss Enamel and allowed the paint to dry but I could tell it was fresh by pushing my finger nail into it slightly. This was a trick the Manufacturer told me about. But I kept my distance with the can and it was important to apply it even per Manufacturer. The final coat was a bit heavier but with no runs if you know what I mean. It is important to use a paint that is best for Aluminum. As far as the trailer I will tell you Craigslist has a lot of them. Some new and some used. I would search there first. Trust me on this one.

@take2fishing 5 лет назад
Hey FrozenPopcorn. Dang Great question and the first to ask. Lowe's carries Outdoor carpet. I didn't just walk in and buy some. I looked at the colors and grades. I didn't like the grey heavy because I was thinking about how long it would take to dry and Mold issues. The thin was out because a hook would mess it up in no time as well as foot traffic. So I went with the medium grade. Perfect for glue and all around wear...😀 Thanks and good question.

Very nice. Just wondering what's the purpose of styrofoam inside the boat under the decking? The boat floats because of the shape, not because the material itself floats. Is it more of a sound barrier so the aluminum sounds don't scare the fish?
@take2fishing
@take2fishing 4 года назад
Well Andy to be honest. The Manufacturing Co will add Styrofoam in the cavities of the seat to increase buoyancy and to decrease the amount of water the vessel can take on. This is how a Vessel is rated. Myself I added Styrofoam as a sound barrier and when placed under Wood or Subflooring and attached properly it will aid in the same purpose. Thanks for the comment and for watching.

How does it do In the rain? Does it drain good with the foam in the bottom of the boat?
@take2fishing
@take2fishing 4 года назад
Hey Jacob and thanks for the comment. I didn't place a piece of foam in the very back where the fuel cell is simply for that reason. I have washed this boat out a few times and the water seems to travel pretty good to the rear of the boat. When someone asks a question and ya have to really think a moment it's a good one😂 Hope this helps and hope ya come back for another some time.

Really nice looking finished project! I’m curious how much weight all the wood added. I noticed someone asked how much lower it sits in the water. When my father and I converted a 16-foot SeaArk tunnel hull jon boat, we used heavy-gauge aluminum (welded) for the front and rear decks and the floor. And instead of carpet used marine vinyl flooring. Set up was slightly different with a side console for running and just two high-back removable seats for fishing. (one front with trolling motor and one on back deck) But with an older 2-stroke 70 hp motor, could run inshore on a plane with half a crab trap showing. Man I miss that boat!

For anybody looking to do this I would suggest you get as wide a boat as your budget allows. You see folks doing 14x36 boats and I can tell you from experience those boats are very tippy and wobbly and can be easily considered dangerous when you get those high decks on them. You heard him say himself his boat is very wobbly.

I wish I could build a deck on mine. I just cant seem to find plywood wide enough for my jon boat.
@take2fishing
@take2fishing 4 года назад
Hey Austin. Here is what you do. Build you a frame. Next get Cardboard and lay it on top acting as if it was the deck ok. Then lay that on 2 pc' s of Ply Wood to get the correct deck size. Next paint the Ply Wood with Oil base and let it dry. Then get a large enough piece of Carpet to cover both peaces of Wood. Next lay the Carpet on hard surface and coat the back of the Carpet with carpet glue. Lay the ply on it as needed. Let it set to dry. Next Cut and fold and staple carpet as needed then....Get 3 people to help you lay the carpeted ply wood in the boat on frame. Next screw down wood to frame. BAM YOU NOW HAVE A SOLID DECK. NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW. Just be sure to paint with Oil base to keep wood from rotting. Hope this helps and this is how we did my friends and it's perfect.

Well I have this 14/36 and a 2.5 motor. It will work BUTTTT so boaring to put put with it. I found a new non current 8 HP motor and am working on getting it rigged. I have new trolling motor coming. No Sir. I used 90 Degree brackets 1 inch by 1 inch from Lowes and used 1/2 stainless screws and screwed those into the cross Ribs. Make sure you don't use any long screws that might go threw the bottom of the boat. Every leg is secured this way. About how much weight does all of that wood, carpet, etc add to the boat? Does being that high above the original deck make it unstable for fishing? I'm thinking about doing the same with my 14' Tracker jon boat.
@take2fishing
@take2fishing 4 года назад
Hey Ten Two. Man your Tall😂 Great questions...If I had to guess I have added 250lbs Max. As I stated in the Video being that the Casting deck is 14 inches above the floor and it is a 14' JB it does seem to be a TAD unstable at the nose. But I placed my pedestal seat over the top of the original seat location so it is perfect. I can stand or sit and fish in the general area of that Butt seat. Now the back deck even with the Motor there is very stable. Would I change anything? NO I enter from the front all the time and have no problems. Am I uncomfortable in the front? Not at all and love it. I hope this helps. PS I'm 5-11" and 180lbs this may give you an idea.
