There are three basic rules for working with eletricity. 1) Shut the power down. 2) Ensure that power is really shutdown. 3) Ensure that power cannot be switched on accidently while you are working. In most of the cases when it comes to working with electricity though, get a professional.

My father is an electrican. These are exact the rules I learned from him. When I was a teenager he often took me with him, when he helped neighbours or friends. Sometimes it was my job to stand at the fusebox while he was working, just to make shure that nobody would put on the electricity at the wrong time.

Also get some special tools. For example if you don't tighten down screws correctly (by torque spec) you can cause resistance which can heat up and cause a fire. Very typical cause of burned down homes.

@@Patchy I know this has put you off doing this work yourself, but going through that will actually make you safer than someone who hasn’t. Yes, you screwed up (I had a very similar mishap myself), but you have a much better understanding of the risks now than you did before. I don’t want you to do anything you’re uncomfortable doing, but if you choose to again, you’re more equipped than ever.

My brother in law, who is a self taught builder, said years ago that if an amateur tries to do some plumbing the worst that can happen is he gets soaked but if he tries electrical work he could kill himself. Keep safe!

Some years ago I accidentally touched a live electrical wire that was hiding on a kitchen shelf I was wiping down with a damp rag (of course). I happened to be half standing on an aluminium ladder and half on a laminate kitchen bench at the time. I’ll never forget the ripple of electricity that shot through my body! Thankfully I’m still here to tell the tale. 😊

I have a project on my hands with an old town house roughly from the 1600/1700s with natural stone walls where it cost me a fortune to get the wiring done by a spark. I have an agreement with a professional so I do the dry wiring with correctly sized cables and he will hook up everything afterwards and verify that I didn’t mess anything up. :) Glad you are alive buddy but don’t be afraid to do tiny steps towards learning something 🙏

Hi George, glad you're OK. Yes you have learnt a valuable lesson : Leave the electric stuff to the professionals, my son is an electrician and he had to do a four year apprenticeship. Do carry on with taking thinks apart ( with advice ) and you will learn a lot, thus helping you self confidence. I've been doing some renovation on my house. I'll take on just about anything with the exception of electrical. I only work on that if it's sticking out of the walls or ceiling. i.e. changing out light fixtures and plugs. I do not go deeper. I've seen too many people get the nick name "Sparky" the hard way. Very glad you are OK.

George, we've all done similar stuff. I caused some fireworks when I was chasing out a pipe run in a plaster wall. Discovered a ring main with the chisel tool in my Makita drill. It took a chunk out of the bit and made my ears ring. 😧

GEORGE! That scared the shite out of me and I wasn't even there! I'm so glad you're okay! It's funny, I moved about three years ago and when it comes to electrical work, I hired someone out. I won't mess with it because I have a hard time understanding something I can't see and could potentially wipe out my existence in the fraction of a second! 😊. I do everything else but I refuse to touch anything to do with electricity except changing a light bulb as I work on my house. I’m an old lady and it’s held me in good stead.
