I almost lost all my gear after my upstairs neighbors had a water leak right above my studio setup. In this video i'll take you through the aftermath and talk to an acoustics specialist about rebuilding the room and upgrading its acoustics!

Bro your walls and ceiling are gonna grow serious mold. I would move out of that apartment ASAP.

I wouldn't think too much about the high frequency comb filter effect, that you can see in the measurements, and trust your ears on that one. For me and just looking at the measurements, the setup with the speakers close to the wall and the bass drivers facing outwards looked basically perfect. Also, the hf + mf driver should disperse the sound a little bit wider to the inside in that configuration, which could sound better. Very good advice from mbakustik to move the monitors as close to the front wall as possible, and an interesting find with the non-existent vertical room mode. Since you're using REW already, you could have a look at the RT60 topt as well + at the waterfall and spectrogram for the bass response. You can only do that individually with your left or right speaker, not with the averaged response. Make sure to not overdamp the room. Once you reached around 0.3 seconds of reverberation time in any frequency range, I would stop using absorption in that frequency range and just use diffusion/reflection to improve things even further. When in doubt, trust your ears. I would never sacrifice something that sounds good for something that looks good on a graph. I'm very impressed about the linearity of the ATCs in your room, looks amazing. And I would totally get those walls and the ceiling checked and dried and if necessary redone before you put anything new on them, but it seems like that's the plan already.

I'm sorry man. I hope you get through this as quick as possible. And yes, the 3k area is very critical and super aggressive in a mix.

80 cm of real estate is indeed, a difficult decision.. I might suggest investing in diaphragmatic absorbes instead of porous ones, it is more of a "targeted" approach, but when done properly.. it yields great results! The sizes can vary and with a rather "compact" form factor, you could (potentially) reach frequencies that fibrous materials would require quadruple the space! John H. Brandt widely discusses these concepts on his channel and clearly Gearspace Acoustics forum is filled with information from actual pros. btw Amroc - The Room Mode Calculator (amcoustics) Multi-Layer Absorber Calculator (acoustic-modelling) are your friends..

God that sucks, I'm assuming the gear was alright though? This is the main issue with having a home studio ; Living space. I could easily sacrifice on rent and live in a closet studio if it wasn't for my need for studio space. Then beyond that you need to deal with upstairs/downstairs neighbours.

Damn, water damage is no fun.. good that you take the positive flow and use it as a chance to upgrade and improve your setup. Looking forward to the results. Tips from mbakustik were very nice. Have to make a measurement in my room as well. Would a decent rode mic give any result worth working with and what (free) software did you use?
@thomasvopstal
@thomasvopstal 7 месяцев назад
Most mics we use for recording are pretty coloured, so they might not give a really honest result. Measurement mics are made to be flat and boring. Also, i’m pretty sure the mic beeds to be omnidirectional. A measurement mic is a really small investment, but so worth it!

Hi Thomas! Great content as always, even when shit happens! Big fan from madrid! Can I ask you if you used any calibration file for the Behringer ECM8000? Thank you very much, you rock;)
@thomasvopstal
@thomasvopstal 6 месяцев назад
Thanks so much!🙏 i didnt use a calibration file as i’m really only trying to spot the big 10db differences here to tackle my main issues. In a later stage if all of that is dealt with, i’ll hire an acoustician to measure the room and really make a plan for the acoustics, but that’s not for this room i guess.

Brother definitely try to tighten up the width of speaker placement like in those mock ups. The base simply increased because the cabinets are closer to the corners. Glad this is turning into a win for you!
@thomasvopstal
@thomasvopstal 7 месяцев назад
But the thing is, i discussed exactly that with Markus and as the back wall is completely glass, they are not hard corners, they should be pretty transparent at low frequencies, which helps a lot here. I need access to my balcony door, so this is the only position for the monitors right now and i’m happy with it. I might use the plugs i got for the ports on the atc’s to make them sealed enclosures. Maybe that helps a bit
