I love the way the milkshake scene mirrors this one, that was Daniels revenge. Making Eli renounce his faith was as demeaning for him as this absurd baptism was for Daniel.
Quentin Tarantino said the Paul Dano felt like the only exception in this otherwise perfect movie was paul danos performance not being able to hold candle to Daniel Day Lewis and im inclined to agree. If Eli were supposed to come of as a worthy adversary to Daniel in this scene i would say he falls short.
Those lines, especially 'my boy' break my heart everytime! Masterclass in acting, writing, directing. Incredibly good movie and scene (and Sir DDL: that was one for The Ages, nobody can beat you at your game!)
Michael Carnevale Yes, I believe he did. if you watch closely at Plainview face while he is talking to HW at the train, a tear drop falls off of his face. While walking away from the leaving train, you can clearly see his face and it is all telling. We can tell that he was a rather compassionate father given the time period. it was very common for parents to distance themselves from their kids, and it was very normal to send their disabled kids to school away from them. A single man taking care or a child was VERY strange, and it was an incredible undertaking.
the thing i fucking love about this scene is how he whispers about the pipeline to himself when its finally over, being baptized and humiliated in this manner is his worse nightmare but this man will do anything to get what he wants
@@jackprime The way Daniel shakes his hand, holds it, moves in closer and glares at Eli...extremely threatening....already promising revenge right then and there....Eli Fk'd with the wrong psychopath....Daniel will wait as long as it takes, but he will get his revenge
I love this scene! Eli slapping Daniel, and Daniel knowing he cannot do anything about it in front of the churchgoers. You can feel Daniel's frustration
@szs voc Liking your own comment and writting about people being "cliche sheep" and "in need of a life". Bwahahahah w/e dude! I don't have patience for stupid people so i won't even ask what in god's green earth triggered you to write sth like that. I don't wanna know...
Exactly. We're set up to know this is making him cringe to the fullest extent. And then Eli guilts him about HW and multi-slaps him, hahahaha. My friends and I were dying on this part the first time we watched it. Man, I wish I could watch this for the first time again. What a chaotic and beautiful experience. The back and forth between Daniel and Eli was great.
hes based off of Edward Doheny who in real life was pretty much an oil/money hungry piece of shit like Plainview. The last name Plainview, its most likely inspired by an oil town in Texas called Plainview, TX.
EminAnimE1 This most fabulous film was scripted by Paul Thomas Anderson, based upon Upton Sinclair's novel "OIL"... however another book as well) I cannot recall....no time to look it up. Name of the film is "THERE WILL BE BLOOD" I'm not around here much, and maybe someone already answered your question.Sorry. But I believe DDL among THE greatest actors ever. And THIS, among his finest of work. Take Care and buy the DVD or whatever. It's brilliant.
to Wally....... "YES it IZZ-UH!" In my opinion THIS, as well as his subtly brilliant performance as Newland Archer in Scorsese's film version of Edith Wharton's "The Age Of Innocence".....convinces me he is among THE BEST. Far too many other performances to list.
This is one of the greatest films of all time. Incredible acting by an outstanding cast, and cinematography on the level of Kubrick. I only wish it was twice as long. I wonder if there's any chance of an extended Director's Cut?
@@FragMeAndTagMe nah, I agree. There Will Be Blood, in my opinion, is THE greatest film ever made. The writing, cinematography, acting, directing, music, it’s almost perfect when out together. This film is beyond a masterpiece!
What was so great about this scene is, he had no problem admitting to being a sinner, he had no problem even taking the slaps. What pissed him off was when Eli mentioned H.W. but even then he powered through it.
Baptism is holy and even beyond insincerity. Even the Roman’s that placed a crown of thorns on Christ’s head in a mocking gesture did not realize they were the first evangelists to proclaim Christ as the King of Kings.
I just love that In this scene Daniel doesn't give a shit about being there and you can see the aggression in his eyes towards Eli. And that moment when Eli pisses him off to his limit he shouts so it can be over and you can see that Daniel feels humiliated. And I love that at the end of the film when he humiliates Eli by getting Eli to say "I am a false prophet and God is a superstition" for payback of this humiliation. Damn this film is amazing PTA is a modern Kubrick.
Not only that, but William Bandy (whose land Daniel needs in order to build the pipeline) knows that Daniel killed the person who posed as Daniel's brother on his tract. If Daniel didn't go through with the "baptism" at the hands of Eli, he would have risked having that dark truth exposed.
Mike Giongo Exactly Mike! Did you guys also like Bandy's acting? Its really very good (as where many of the supporting roles, like his brother-from-another-mother)
One can only imagine after the baptism scene that when Daniel shook his hand and spoke.. He said I will get you for this.. Great film and a well deserved Oscar.
I'm pretty sure when he is whispering, he is telling him that he is going to eat him. at the end of the movie, when he gives eli his own medicine, he shouts that he told him he would eat him.
This scene has everything, power, comedy, intelligence, vulnerability and truth while still being able to trick the congregation that he's cleansed when deep down he just wants his "pipline" built. one of the greatest Actors ever!
Tristan Tobey everyone needs to stop conparing him to anyone, there has never been an actor with his range. De niro is great but plays basically the same characters all the time. This man completely morphs into any character possible and never has a dull moment or does any cheesy hollywood movies. Put some respect on his name please.
More than 3 years after watching this for the first time, and I only just realized that when Eli is screaming at Daniel to "get out devil!", he's really telling Daniel to leave the town.
One man goes into the waters of baptism. A different man comes out, born again. But who is that man who lies submerged? Perhaps that swimmer is both sinner and saint, until he is reveals unto the eyes of man. - Zachary Hale Comstock
You can really see hints of the riddler in Eli. I thought of this movie while watching Batman, it was an alright movie but know where near as good as this masterpiece.
has the director or the actors themselves ever commented (not speculation) about the comment made by DDL to Paul at the end of the scene? Does anyone KNOW for sure?
This is my favourite scene in the film and one of my favourite scenes of all time because even this depraved, selfish and frankly horrible man we see is still capable of feeling- he wants a friend, a partner and he feels guilty for his son. There is hope even in the worst of us.
well yeah he is overall- he thinks it'll be a walkover but he actually finds it emotionally moving- we see his guilt and regret is genuine because in the very next scene he brings his son home from the school he sent him to
I thought Tommy Lee Jones was a lock for best actor 2007 until I saw this movie and this scene made me realize that no one else could even come close, and if DDL wanted to win an Oscar he could probably do it on a whim. Look at his facial expressions, the guilt/frustration/rage all blend together, as if DDL was actually dealing with these things himself in real time.
You need to play this scene until Mary Sunday walks up behind him and hugs him. It shows that Daniel is capable of caring for people. And he cares for H.W and Mary Sunday, because of their innocence. They are not yet corrupted by the ills of the world.
The thing about this movie is that it supplies so much while giving so little. Like when Daniel whispers something to Eli, we don't know what he's saying but it could be a number of things that can be tied into the story. Brilliance! But, Paul Dano does smile when shaking Daniels hand, so : /
it was a terrified fake smile. he didnt smile immediately and Dano so perfectly shows that it was clearly not genuine, not only that but hes so good in this movie you can even get the idea that it was a smile for the audience, whos eyes were mostly still on Plainview, to give the idea that what he said wasnt something horrible that scared him
