The standards for African beauty have evolved over time, demanding money and hefty investment from black women by making us feel inadequate and flawed in design. Maureen Murunga shares how she participated in these 'truths' and even made a business out of them, until she became a mother and had to re-examine what she was going pass down to her girls.
Maureen Murunga has been fascinated by hair and beauty since she was a little girl. She owns and runs a string of salons in Nairobi and has recently fallen in love with her natural hair. She takes us on that journey.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
