Let’s however not overlook the fact that those in a position of power often use calls for civility as tactic to undermine the aggressive and urgent calls for change that come from activists, especially when the activist is good at what they do. In many instances i'll butt heads with a social justice type, but even now there's still institutionalised racism, it's undeniable, and back then it was even more present. The professor is basically saying "Don't acknolwedge it" from the position of being someone for whom race doesn't create any issues, to someone who is speaking from the position of having grown up with all sorts of marginalisation. I agree that we talk about it overzealously today, and we try to find offense in everything, but when it does happen it's still real despite all the green pixie hair psychos making a mockery of the word "offensive".

I lived through that time and I'm still alive, I had white friends who died defending the rights of blacks in the south, we have reverted, you would never see that today. My generation had great ideals, but ultimately we failed to make any significant changes. A great number of our men were killed in a senseless war, and the radical left burnt out on it's own idealism because there was no focus on a solution. Race is a social construct. The more of an issue you make of race, the more race becomes an issue, undoubtedly true in today's climate. Ethnicity is the only difference between humans other than the minor physiological things we call race. It's literally a paradox, doing something proactive for a single minority makes it worse, doing nothing doesn't make it better.

That still doesn't explain why it's *exactly* race that triggers that hate. There are so many different things that people can be very different in, but the color of the skin is exactly the one that triggers hate? It seems too much like some random social construct to me, that is ironically kept alive by trying to solve the problem.

However, this is like the story of the Hen and the Pig: whilst the Hen has only to give up her eggs to satisfy the demands of the World, the Pig must give her very flesh. It is easy to say "Everyone is fundamentally equal by birthright; why can't we all just agree on this and live our lives accordingly?" when you occupy the priviledged position; much harder to do when the results of institutional inequality have a very real negative impact on your daily life.

It's easy to say "we're all just scholars, why bring race into this" when you haven't had to go through life as a black man.

America's "liberty and justice for all" motto is in almost every way hypocritical for anyone who wasn't white. Even white women we're still fighting for their own rights. Not being able to vote, having to drink from separate fountains, being denied good education, the elevated chance of being falsely accused, beaten and lynched and the psychological and physical abuse at the hands of both civilian society and authorities has definitely left it's stained mark on this country.

I've been looking at quite a few interviews from the 1960's - 1980, there was an awful lot of smoking during the interviews.

During that time, intimidation, killings, beatings, and police brutality on blacks was rampant. I lived during those times. I'm white. I saw the systemic racism up close and personal. Coming from the church Baldwin was a great orator and was most at home behind a pulpit. His best work, in my opinion, is the essay he wrote for The New Yorker in 1962 entitled "The Fire Next Time." It's one of the great pieces of literature of the late 20th century, and though it is polemical in nature it transcends a merely political and sociological position and becomes a great humanist document. He speaks ultimately for all of us.

What they can do is foment hatred for no reason. Good for them. The concept that all institutions are looking to kill black people is nonsense. I simple review of the 200 most notable cases of a cop killing a black person are situations where I think I found three where I wouldn't shoot the gun myself to save my life. When a 12 year old pulls a gun out on a cop the cop has to make a decision. I'd suggest the parents tell their kids to not pull out guns as if you plan to shoot a cop and most of those cases would not have happened. Furthermore if you wanted to save over 12 times as many cases of black minors being killed by shooting scenarios the necessity of teaching the black community to care about black lives would be required and not a focus on cops. So what instititution is the case of being fearful for this articulate man worried about versus his own community? You see Martin Luther King Jr. with Christian principles caused such speech by me to be logical, but this man's Malcolm X with Muslim principles is not going to help his cause at all and in fact take away the gains he actually enjoyed in his own life time. But what does he care about the future of black people? He doesn't. He enjoys his logic and could care less about his community. He is a Muslim. He has his own goals. See if you can find a good verse in the Quran. Is it the don't drink, so that there is no joy and Jesus' first miracle makes Him against being for Allah? I doubt it. But see if you can present one.

I said he was more articulate than 99% of people today. As time progresses, newer generations are generally smarter than their parents/grandparents.
