I agree that we need "The Straight Story" given a Criterion release. It is my all-time favorite film. Also 1979's "Saint Jack" with Ben Gazzara. Directed by Peter Bogdanovich. A classic!!
For the record, Happiness has been on RU-vid forever. Very good quality. Yes, I will buy the Criterion version, but who would pay those ridiculous prices for the old dvd when you could watch it for free?
I can't believe Happiness is finally getting its day! I never expected this. I currently own a terrible quality homemade version. This is such great news!
Happiness just gets better with every viewing! Glad more people will be able to enjoy it now. I bought the original DVD when it came out-- I saw it in B&N's video section and recognized the Dan Clowes artwork on the DVD case (I collect his work among others), which made it an instant buy for me. I love the film and it is still one of my all-time favorites. So glad this is getting a HQ release.
SO happy Criterion is releasing "All of Us Strangers'! One of my favorites of last year. Really hit close to home. :( Can't wait until the November sale!
You are going to love “The Long Good Friday.” Along with the original “Get Carter” it is THE great British gangster thriller. Hoskins gives a searing performance as a guy who finds his carefully orchestrated scenario mysteriously crumbling around him. Helen Mirren is equally great. Also, look for an early appearance by Pearce Brosnan as an IRA gunman.
I saw Happiness in the theater when it was first released. There was a sign taped to the door: “no refunds will be given after the first 15 minutes” lol
I would love to see Straight Story on Criterion Collection because that film is so criminally underrated and so hard to find and I think it would be neat to see Criterion release it on the collection in the future.
Great content! I’ll definitely be on the lookout for All of Us Strangers and Happiness (which I saw once years ago). I’m hoping Criterion will release 4K editions of Wild at Heart and Killer of Sheep sometime soon.
Banger month. I haven't bought any Criterions in a hot while cause they've just been releasing a ton of shit I have no interest in at all or movies I straight up despise. I'll probably grab a couple from this month once the November sale hits.
"Happiness" was the most disturbing & unsettling movie I've ever seen, came across a VHS copy of it when I worked at Goodwill in 2004 I hated it for so many reasons, especially the story with Dylan Baker who falls for his young son's friend, I was really disturbed by that scene that I chose never to watch the film ever again.
You haven't seen Brazil or Life of Brian? Hoskins has small parts in both of those, and both are Criterion. He was also in The Wall, Hook, and Nixon, where he played J. Edgar Hoover. If I had know I could get 300 bucks for Happiness, I would have bought a handful of them at Best Buy 20+ years ago. Used to see it there all the time, remember it because of the cover.
Great video and a great month for sure! 1234 is not an iconic number in any way. The term iconic gets misused far too often and in this case is irrelevant because it has never had a history or been used before. Thanks for the video though!
