People with less melanin often have lighter skin, blue eyes, and lighter hair. Melanin also gives people natural protection from UV rays that the sun gives off, and UV rays can damage the DNA in skin cells, causing skin cancer. That’s the most basic explanation I can give Edit:everyone has melanin. Melanin is also in organs and such. Also your body can produce melanin the more you’re in the sun, mainly bc your body can sense that the sun is effecting you a lot, so to better protect itself, it makes melanin

The fact that merry didn’t go to high school also explains it a bit more. I would imagine that European high schools would teach at least a little bit of anatomy or maybe even a social studies class

This isn't something we get taught here in England. I can't speak for any other European country. I think the only time we would be taught this is if we did A-Level Biology. But even then it wouldn't be a major topic that gets discussed. If we want to know about this stuff we would have to teach ourselves. The most we get taught is that there are certain chemicals that cause certain parts of the body to have colour.

omg when he said "ok I'm just gonna ask" I thought he was gonna say "are you black?" and then instead he threw such a curveball with "if you are white but have melanin, are you spanish?" and I was just laughing hahahaha I was like wtf where did that come form. I think kenji mentioned that black vtubers dont get as much viewership as other vtubers due to the skin taboo overseas and just blatant racism from certain countries, including the EN community.

When you look at the vtubers in the community, 90% of them are sooooo white so I don’t blame him but it does cause confusion when you first start watching him. Off topic, but I saw that he befriended Kyo from nijisanji, they do give off the same tough guy tsundere vibes so I wouldn’t be surprised if Kyo was also a black minority 🤔 When I first saw him I thought he had a dopey New York voice, but maybe this whitewashed vtuber thing is much more common

I remember him doing DNA test and his African American percentage was quite low,, I don't think it would've been high enough to be classified as black per say,, I'd say he's mixed but leaning white with his arm reveal and all- I'm not sure I stopped watching Kenji months ago though because of the drama :[
