Hello Jeff, I wanted to share an old Italian trick for changing the timing belt without dealing with marks, etc. We simply cut the old belt along the circle, leaving a tiny part (40% width) in place. After partially inserting the new belt, cut the old belt entirely, and then complete the insertion. In your situation, it seemed like half of the job was already done 😁

There is a cam belt method where you cut your old belt in half and then slide the new one on sideways, before finally cutting the old one off completely. Because the two belts are on simultaneously you don’t need to lock the timing. Moot point now but a possible for the future.

I don't think that works with over head cam V engines as there's two belts on the crank pulley and one has to pass the other

Jeff the standard 360 muffler with flaps open is nothing more than an empty chamber with 2 inlets and 2 outlets that act as a crossover- gasses mix and are able to exit through either outlet. This design may be the key to unlocking that full sound potential. My aftermarket system is half the size of the original so I don’t believe chamber size is a major factor.

After servicing these engines for 20+ years i could count on 1 hand on how many belt failures we had seen. The OEM/GATES are a “robust” built belt reinforced with Kevlar.. if that was a typical rubber timing belt…results may have been catastrophic..NICE work, by the way.

Never heard about that GATES timing belt is the OEM. DAYCO is the OEM for Italian cars and have kevlar lining. This particular timing belt in this video is also made by DAYCO.

Later 308's had a back guard on the belt covers. There was a guy once who did at least a belt job, but I think it was more involved like a rebuild. Then first drive out he somehow had some kind of subway or transit token sucked up behind and he did not get lucky like you. Broke the belt, grenaded the engine and he found the token laying in there. You got so amazingly lucky and I couldn't be happier for you!!

A suggestion: I know you are rather keen to get the car ready to drive at an event... when you get back, make blanking plates for the rear of the timing belts so nothing can ever get in there again. Oh, and if you make a smallish air dam as a lip on the lower front panel, it will draw more air through the radiator and make the car run cooler. And maybe reduce front lift at speed a little.

Having watched every second of this build even suffering fun facts 😂 I can definitely understand the relief Jeff All our collective hearts were in our mouths and now the buying of proper quality parts is apparent My mechanic cuts around timing belts long ways essentially halfing them, then slips on the new belt, cut the old off then slides the new the rest of the way on I’m stoked for you 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿😎👏👌

What this guy did to change steering: Benjamin workshop GT40 Test bench at michelin ! chassis set up preparation [Episode 3] go to 25.13 The whole process is amazing how they load the car into the simulator so to speak balancing it And everything. I've never seen that before and it really taught me a lot help me understand so much. This little change he does seems to have a big impact in the steering reaction.

A neat little method of changing a timing belt without a tool, is to cut the old one in half to expose the cogs halfway, slip on the new belt, cut of the old, push new one home. Your old one was nearly in half anyway......

Over 20 years ago when I was 17 I rebuilt an old Honda Accord 4 cylinder engine. I forgot to install a washer on the crank pulley which I think caused a slight misalignment in the crank sprocket. After running it for a while, I pulled off the timing cover and saw the timing belt had slipped off the edge of the cam sprocket by about 50%, but not completely. After a little troubleshooting I realized my mistake and put the washer back on the crank pulley and the timing belt stayed in place from that point onwards. If I hadn't pulled off the timing cover I never would have noticed, and the belt could have slipped all the way off and killed the engine. I was super lucky.

OMG Jeff! That was epic! Good on ya mate! 😂 I had a close call with and new starter with incorrect bendix gear. Thank God it only chewed the ring gear before I caught it. Just had a brand new clutch installed and hope the little chip I hear at mesh when hot isn't a sign the brand new Hill throwout bearing is tweaked. Count your blessings mate and best to Mrs. Jeff. 😊

Good to see the engine is not broken! For the steering, in the past i did a upgrade for my bmw 3 serie e30 to a z3 steeringrank , on a roundabout, you can keep your hands on the steeringwheel , it has a 2,75 turning ratio, I think you need to have below 3 turning for a sporty feel

Honestly, I'm very glad that the engine is alive, I watched RU-vid a week ago, the sensor burned and left the belt, I understood exactly the valve hit the piston, it really hurt me watching! I don't know how to write comments! and now write comments. Congratulates Alfarrari alive and best!!!!

You're so lucky but you just deserve it so much! So happy for you man! Just check the compression ratio to make sure the valves didn't touch the pistons, even for just a moment. Then you will sleep better!
