Yes. I’ve noticed this too. Even aside from products. It was telling to me about a year ago or so when Apple stopped reporting the volume of iPhones sold in their quarterly financial reports. This was a signal to me that they want to get out of the rat race of cheaper, mass market devices and handsets - competition including HTC, Samsung, Huawei, Google, and the rest - and instead hone in on making highly refined products for a more niche market of consumers and professionals. This interview with Phil confirms this.

@@bolttracks of they really want to put pro on the front of their midn they gotta put more ports then USB c. They are not thinking of pros just out of kindness, their sales are hurting and they are trying to regain trust by fixing some problems while still keeping their other bad shit that earns them alot of money, in hopes that everyone will forget because they fixed half of the problems. @@MrDragonorp Watch the full interview from Phil, you'll see there's absolutely a reason to keep only USB-C. Sure, cameras still have SD cards, but the spec is evolving all the time. There are new and upcoming technologies for storing data for cameras and whatnot, and putting something like a dedicated SD card slot would be mostly ignorant at this point. USB-C, and especially thunderbolt, allows much more expansion than a dedicated port for any of these formats would. Imagine this: a new capacity or speed rating comes out for SD cards, which isn't compatible with SDHC/XC/whatever. Any laptop with a built in reader gets fucked, an internal port like that does not have an upgrade path. Now imagine you were using a dongle to read SD cards, now instead of replacing your laptop, you simply buy a new dongle compatible with the new standard. This is the power of USB-C/thunderbolt, and is likely the biggest reason Apple is sticking to this IO selection. In regard to non-SD formats, even better! A dongle could be produced for any of those, and bam your laptop is suddenly compatible with it. Stop being ignorant.

Kronixio it helps differentiate the product by giving it a designation. For shorthand you can just say “Air” or “Pro” Same reason there’s no desktop computer just called “Mac”

Kronixio yeah that makes sense. Air should be the lightest MacBook which is why the 12” MacBook confused things especially as it had the same general design as a MacBook Air. Given the current Air is similar in Dimensions to the old Air it makes sense to maintain that designation for marketing and familiarity reasons. Logically though it would just be better to have like it was before: An 11-inch and 13” MacBook Air like there’s a 13” and now 16” MacBook Pro. 2 size models in each category. If they bring a MacBook back they probably should make it with the pre-2016 design using a plastic case again. Then consumers will know what their buying and referring to visually. A 5 notebook line. Otherwise just can the MacBook designated models altogether which it looks like they’ve done now. One other thing though - it seems people don’t like small screens so I’m in favour of what was said in the OP on a 13” Air, 14” Pro and a 16” Pro.

Look at the comparisons between the old retina 15 inch and this new 16 inch - they're almost identical in footprint. They need to update the keyboard in the 13 inch anyway so making it fit the old retina 13 inch footprint while carrying a 14 inch display is a no-brainer. Makes the case for the 12 inch even stronger, a machine I have been waiting for since the 12 inch PowerBook...

Brendan Rosa I actually owned pro 15 inch macbook and one of the reasons to downgrade to 13 inch pro was because the dedicated graphic card made 15inch hotter when it didn’t need that power and the battery life was worse. I’m “pro” but I’m using my computer at a work for writing code, debugging apps that run in browser or mobile apps, I’m doing code reviews, drawing designs in Sketch and similar tools, discussing specifications and documentation and I use it to communicate with many different teams in our company. I need reliable and portable machine that can compile app for android and iOS if needed in reasonable time. But I dont need the extremely powerful graphics card.

Nah, that was a PR answer. He was hesitating and was clearly nervous when asked that question (body language). He probably was told that he couldn’t confirm nor deny a 14’’ MBP and had to come up with an answer on the spot when actually asked about it directly, which I would say means that it’s probably coming at some point.

Just a note - the new Macbook pro 16 display is a 16:10 aspect ratio, and that give you extra vertical real estate - super useful for programming and web browsing :)

The reason why we had 13 inch to begin with is because in 2000s Dell, Hp etc were all producing 14 inch ones. Then, Apple launched the 13 inch white and black Macbooks that seemed like they were ahead of their time. If they can do similar hardware upgrades while keeping the same 13-inch size that's good enough, 14-inch imho would be going back in time/history repeating itself etc..

Really loved these clips from that interview, More importantly I really appreciate PHIL SCHILLER and that he took the time to talk in a relaxed setting to us Apple lovers! Jony has done plenty of personal media work, he always fascinates, always feels more pure from the heart passion. I detest the distance Apple execs place between themselves and their users - be-it end users or Professionals. I would love to hear more of these Q&A sessions not only when there is a new product to be promoted. I just hate the usual tight lipped, rehearsed, chronic personality lacking media events they do. I’m not talking Keynotes, they are Gold and always have been. I watched my first in 2005 when I was 8 watching the new iPod Nanos, havent really missed one since. But theres a massive gap between these biannual keynotes and actual media work. I know there is a clear company directive to be highly rehearsed and careful around media and always has been historical. But DO MORE! TALK TO US! SHOW UNADULTERATED PASSION! YOU ARE HUMAN, WE ARE HUMAN lets talk Apple! I completely understand Apple is a massive corporation and being overly open to the media has financial and competition costs. But the alienation of users and user discussion needs to change. User Base Transparency does not have to be the tradeoff to be successful in the market - quite the opposite, marketing campaigns cannot entirely manufacture an image of caring, A more personal touch would go a long way. I care about every design decision Apple takes, it affects me, whether or not I buy the product, software or service I appreciate the genius behind every fine detail they add but I also see flaws too - but I wish the users could have a more profound impact in the process. For example Engage the Jailbreak Community, work with them! Take on board their massively creative ideas quicker - stop fighting them! We shouldnt have to wait all this time for new Volume HUDs, in app Camera Video Res Options, Control Centre 3d touch to actually control wifi networks in Control centre etc! Jailbreak implemented these years ago. Apple you have many of the worlds finest on board, but you’re users and devs are also pretty intelligent too :)

3:55 until 4:12 There are some (possible) signs of deception portrayed by Phil's body language: 1. Looking down/avoiding eye contact; 2. Swivelling the chair - fight or flight response; 3. Movement of legs - again fight or flight response where he's been so comfortable before. As a former corporate Apple employee... Phill just did the professional employee demo of how to deny answering a future product release. He is a true pro and that was a textbook response. So... 2020 Q1or Q2 keynote - Phill Schiller - “And we are happy to announce a whole new MacBook designed for Pros... we call it, The 14-inch MacBook Pro. This is a real Pro MacBook for pros needing extreme portability... and it is awesome.” Mark my words^^^ this will happen.

Honestly he's right though. I use SD cards regularly even but they aren't the only media I need to offload so I don't care that I have to use a dongle. In the future I'll use them even less as media changes. TB3 has the most flexibility while taking up the least amount of space.

Jeremiah Kuehne that's true, but for my personal reason of wanting one, I have a Dell laptop with an SD card slot, I used that SD card slot to increase my storage space by 256gb. I can just leave the SD card in there and forget about it and it's like putting an SSD inside the laptop. There's just a convenience of just putting an SD card in or usb mouse reciever into a laptop, and not having to worry about carrying an adapter that you could lose along the way. If they did add it in the future, that would be pretty cool as you would be able to just increase your storage by 1tb just by putting a 1tb SD card in. Just my op though.

This would be a perfect lineup: 13" Air, 14" Pro, 16" Pro Let the AIR be the thin ultraportable, and stop worrying about the thickness on the PRO. It will be a clear distinction and a simplified product line to reduce choice confusion and fatigue. We don't even need a choice of body colors on the PRO, just leave that as Space Gray, maybe make it even darker.

Apple has probably already finalised the 14 inch design. Not releasing it alongside 16 inch is a marketing strategy and a conscious decision. First, they'll milk the 16 for a bit, and then release 14 in Q1-Q2 2020. And you all can shit on me now, but in 4 months when it's actually true, I'll have a good laugh.

We don't even know if there's a 14" coming or not. Grab the 16" already, it's a great deal.

While I think it's likely a 14" will come out at some point, or some kind of refresh to 13" lineup to match closer to what the 16" offers, if you need one right now and have the money, the 16" is a great computer and most likely better in every way than the 14" one. The only advantage of the 14" one would be being a bit more portable, probably slightly lighter so think about how much you move with your laptop, on what you carry it, and if power or mobility are a bigger factor for you. If it's power then go for the 16", if it's mobility wait for the hypothetical 14".

If a few months from now the lineup was this 16", a 14" to match it, and a 12-13" that combines the best parts of the old 12" MacBook and the 13" Air (low power, fanless, two ports, good keyboard, $1000 starting price), that would be a very strong lineup.

Nah, OLED has burn in problems. We need a 16 inch MacBook Pro with an 8K MicroLED 240 hz display with Nvidia Quadro RTX 6000 graphics, a 28 core Intel Xeon W-3175X processor, and a 16 TB SSD. That would be dope.

His "no" was only there to say that you can’t directly say that a 14 inch is coming. Maybe they still think about it. Or it’s not gonna be exactly like the 16 inch. A few rumours said it’s gonna be a 13 inch in a smaller design.

I always bought 15” laptops because I wanted the bigger screen and didn’t care about portability, but I think a 14” would be a better fit for actually carrying around but don’t want to sacrifice dedicated graphics.

I’d go nuts for a 14 inch Macbook Pro. 13 inch is a little redundant now and for a Pro model. I think the Air is good to have 13 inches for. Also think it’d be wise to keep the a USB slot, SD Card slot and an audio jack.

14 inch would be a perfect display size for a laptop....would love to buy a 14 mbp...yes 13 inch is portable and all...but 14 makes it perfect and i am sure once 14 mbp hits the market that would be their best selling laptop ever....coz 13 is small and 15-16 is bigger...14 is the sweet spot...

I feel like the Macbook Pro design was made for the 13 inch because the 15" and 16" just look ugly with all of that empty space infront of the touchbar and the big/rectangular speaker grills, and the huge touchpad. It all looks like a blown out of proportion 13" Macbook Pro.

Top Dawg agreed 100%.... I’m sure the 13inch converted to 14inch will be released next year in March if I had to guess... but if not then it will be June. We can however hope it’s released in December along with the Mac Pro

The 16" MBP is definitely not for me. It's way too expensive and a bit too heavy at 2 kg. However, it's nice to see that the entry level 16" MBP is more or less ready for use out of the box. Reasonably sized SSD, reasonable amount of RAM... which is important for something that is (I assume) not upgradable down the road. A 14" MBP with more reasonable price tag is more interesting for me both from the portability standpoint and pricing standpoint.

I have a 13 Waaaay too small when you have 20 safari tabs on and microsoft word on for ANY school project Also, some programms need more space, i personally use gimp and its pretty hard on a little screen

Bring back the 12” MacBook! They could just rebrand it as a “MacBook Air,” being the successor to the previous 11.6” Air. This was the best compact Mac laptop ever made, as far as I’ve concerned. Yes, it was underpowered - perhaps even engineered into a corner - but it was so small, light, and best of all, SILENT. (No cooling fan.) I’ve got mine, and recently had the battery replaced. I’ll be holding onto it for as long as I possibly can. (Using it right now - docked in a desktop setup!)

I doubt you could squeeze the speaker performance of the 16-inch into a 13 or 14-inch shell, but the 16-inch is back to 13-inch MacBook Pro with DVD weight. I want my smaller laptops to be smaller, not bigger!

No, not at all. He was giving insight into what the thought process behind the choices were. That's valuable information. If us, the consumers through comments, videos etc. give a high enough demand for a 14 inch, then it will be made. It's that simple. :)

An 14” MacBook Pro with the new keyboard would be amazing. Would be even more crazy if they added a dedicated GPU in the 14” MacBook Pro. I never understood why the 13” has to do with the integrated intel ones.
