For the tomato salad: that is how corporate lists the 3 tomato slices. Salads were discontinued shortly after reopening post pandemic. They used to do steamed hashbrowns too, but it became a safety issue.

Yeah steaming the hash browns would require putting ice on the grill with a dome over the hash browns, but there were instances of the ice chipping the metal grill and potentially leaving shards of metal on food. Learned that today on my second and last day as a WH employee

WH employee here, and i gotta say the random waffle house jingles through your video are actually a pretty accurate depiction of working when that song came out (the jukebox system was programmed to play it once every thirty minutes, unless delayed by other songs customers are playing) ALSO EDIT: sidenote, the tomato salad is actually supposed to be a full saucer plate of sliced tomatoes

I want to give a shout out to the Waffle House servers in Columbus, Georgia. I went there with my family several years ago when one of my boys graduated from basic training. There was an elderly veteran there who was a frequent customer. He would order the same thing for breakfast. They treated him like gold and referred to his menu selection as “The Mr. Jenkins”. They absolutely loved him.

it seems like it's for show, and it kinda is, but WH has specifically printed ticket books, not a generic one you might be able to pick up at an office supply store. the system is "pull/drop/mark". You get two tables or two customers who sit down at the same time in your section, get their orders, then go wait to stand on one of the squares behind the bar. You call out your pull (whatever meat they get from the fridge), then how many hashbrowns need to be "dropped", then they "mark" the plates with whats going on them. mark texas bacon cheesesteak hold the onions double plate scattered, (or scattered double plate, depends on how much of a stickler your cook is) would mean they get the large oval plate, drop two distinctly separate bits of hashbrown at the top of it, set down two slices of pre-buttered texas toast, two slices of cheese, a ketchup packet, and a chunk of ham. obviously the bread/cheese makes it a melt, the ketchup means cheesesteak (at least at my store) and the chunk of ham means there's bacon on the sandwich. when you have multiple orders and multiple cooks, they're not going to remember who ordered what exactly, so they glance at the plate, see two face up jelly packets on the bottom of the plate and know "oh, that's why I'm scrambling 4 eggs. if the two jelly packets were upside down that'd be 4 eggs scrambled, but with wheat toast instead of white. if they were apple butter packs, it's raisin toast.

Former employee here! We keep track of order by the marking system! The grill op pulls plates down based on the mark (the order) and places a specific ingredient in a very specific spot in order to mark the order as whatever it may be!

When they call her the order, they will repeat it, but the cook will lay out things on the plate to signal what that plate represents like two jelly packets on the bottom of the plate or butter on the right side of the plate. It’s like a roadmap saying what should be on the plate

I can explain the calling system! I used to train at waho! It’s a little complicated and it takes some getting (it usually takes ppl like 1-3 weeks to understand it) But on the ticket there are three categories: pull drop and mark Pull (meat) Drop (hash browns) Mark (eggs and others) The way you would call an all star with two scrambled eggs with cheese, hasbrowns with cheese, bacon and a double waffle would sound like this: Pull one bacon (one order or bacon comes with three slices) Drop one hashbrown scattered (scattered means in the flattop. You can get it in the ring as well. This makes the hasbrowns a perfect circle) Mark an order (two eggs)scrambled cheese plate covered (when marking, plate= hash browns and covered means cheese)and a waffle on two out like one (two waffles on one plate). I can’t remember the plating system (I haven’t worked there in a year) but grill operators would mark their plates with jelly packets, mayonnaise, hashbrowns, cheese, and other resources to symbolize what goes on that plate! Lmk if you want a further explanation!!!

I'm a Georgian who now lives a city over from the original Waffle House. WH or WaHo is an intrinsic experience of one's life being a Southerner, let alone a Georgian. There's literally 3 WHs in a half mile to mile radius of my alma mater and former job, 4 within a 3 mile radius near my home and 2 within a 2 mile radius of my parent's house. I’ve worked for wh almost 3 years tin south ga the salads were discontinued during Covid due to possible contamination problems with the virus traveling in liquid. But as for the pricing it’s the same across all states and if you really want a hack that’ll save money for parents with kids instead of a 2 egg breakfast and a kids waffle and bacon or sausage order an all start with a large side meat. It’s only a 2 dollar up charge versus a 3 increase for them being separate

As far as the tickets go we’re trained to do a pull drop mark method where we watch the cooks for where they’re at when they mark it tells them if there’s eggs there will be a jelly packet different jelly means different type of toast, mayonnaise if it’s a sandwich or if it’s a dinner plate butter cups or waffle (depending if it’s on the plate or not) different sauces mean different major meals.

They keep track of orders by the way they plate things, like they will put certain things like grape jam in a certain position to signal stuff like eggs, hashbrowns, waffles, etc. Its alot to learn for the workers to memorize every configuration for orders, mad respect

I worked at Waffle House for a year when I was 16. They mark the plates with condiment packets to signify what is what on the plate as the "salesperson" notifies the "grill operator" what the order is and how it's going out. If you listen when they call, you'll see that they "pull" their meats, "drop" their hashbrowns, and "mark" their plates. It's a whole system of code they teach you when you start. I'll never ever forget it, and I LOVE Waffle House

Hey Sam I was a waffle house Rock Star Grill Operator in North Carolina for around 9 months. Every item we have on the cold side can be used to mark something the customer ordered, IE if ham chunks and napkin was place on the 12 o clock postion they wanted grits with ham in it, or a fiesta omlet is marked by having a waffle house sauce and a grape jelly packet on the 12 o clock postion, but scrambled eggs are just a grape jelly at the 6 postion! This system took me a little bit to get into but it worth it!

I worked for WH nearly 4 years, and I just keep thinking there is so much you are missing out on. As employees we made so many things not on the menu to keep it interesting for us... As you can imagine we got burned out on the food after enough years of eating it. I would love to introduce you to what we called the "El Jeffe" omelette, named after our cook Jeff.

@@mememan3424 ask for a 3 egg old fashioned fiesta omelette with hash browns. Have the cook put the hash browns inside the omelette. Pay for 2 extra slices of cheese to be put on top of the omelette, and finish it off with a scoop of chili over the whole thing.
