In 1963 I learned how to drive in a 1950 Ford pickup truck, four speed on the floor, I was twelve years old. The following year I worked at a gas station. During the racing season the owner (Dale) would go to the harness races every weekend in Northfield Park Oh.. About 60 miles away. After the first couple of weeks he asked if I wanted to go with him. I did and he gave me $2 to bet with for each race. Note; $2 - $2.25 was considered a decent hourly wage back then. The very first time we went, when the races were done, he asked me if I would drive us back home --- well, now I knew why he asked if I wanted to go along to the track. He was dead drunk on his feet and unable to drive, he knew I already knew how to drive on my own. I drove a different 1950 ford truck 4 speed on the floor, but this one was in mint condition, completely restored. It was his service truck from the service stations. I drove home the rest of the season and the next. It was nearly the end of the second season and I was up about $45-50 that season, then his wife came to me one weekend --- "please try to get Dale not to spend everything, he's gambling away all our money". I said I'd try. I only took enough money with me to get something to eat and drink that night. I had been getting better at betting by this time but this trip I wouldn't take any money from Dale. It was the 6th race and I was offered money from him but I refused it, then he asked me if I had a horse picked out, I said yes I had three, win, place and show (a trifecta). He kinda laughed then tried to give me money but I wouldn't take it. If I had my money with me I would have made a $6 bet, I wanted to so badly --- all 3 of my horses came in and in order win, place and show! That bet would have paid me $1095.00 (around 3 mounts wages, adult wages) !! So that's how I remember when and how I learned to drive a standard shift. It should be note worthy that I never drove an automatic until I went to the Army when I was 19. It was the 60 mile trips twice each week that taught me how to truly drive when I was 13 years old. Your making memories Demi, hold on to all them, they're nice to visit and share from time to time. I just gave you a small part of one of mine --- learning how to drive a stick. BTY I learned on my own when no one was around.
The start of the video reminded me of the joke about how do you stop a millennial from stealing your car - get a manual. Good luck with your racing career. You certainly have the strength and fitness to drive pro.
