Gray, the reason it says no beards is because in the military you absolutely have to shave everything. According to Wikipedia ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Induction_cut ): Originally, one of the reasons for the induction haircut was to reduce the chances of disease among closely quartered recruits from different geographical areas (with varying immunities), such as head lice. Furthermore, short hair also prevents the enemy from grabbing a soldier with long hair and slashing his/her neck.
when you go to the field to live in trenches and play silly bugger, really short hair is convenient... easy to keep clean and tidy, doesn't interfere with any of your kit, and as noted, someone can't grab it to manipulate you. The Induction Haircut (tm) is partly about tradition, partly about disease like lice, and partly about breaking down the individual to build up the team.
You don't have to shave all your hair. I had a mustache for over a decade while serving. It just can't be shaggy or unruley. True about the beard though. No beards allowed.
@@rb3425 Canada just changed their dress code for the military. Beards are OK, subject to operational issues (I assume if you're going to be in a deployment where gas masks are necessary, the beard has to go, for example).

Well, not really. There will always be people trying to assassinate you because they want the power. In a democracy, it's harder to do that because the power lies with more people. You will always have to appeal to the majority and the people who are helping you maintain power. Not a problem when the groups align, but absolutely catastrophic if they don't. How will you handle political dissent? If you appear weak, your opponents can use it against you. If you are too heavy handed, the people will be more willing to stage a coup. TL;DR: Dictatorships are very unstable, and in a country the size of America, just wouldn't work. There are going to be power vacuums and factions everywhere.
